I agree that it helps to recruit a better kicker. I'm pretty sure accurate kickers aren't as sensitive to how straight you move the stick.
I also usually hold the controller with my left hand and rotate my right hand a little counter-clockwise to line up the natural motion of my right thumb with the up-down axis of the stick (if I don't I have a strong tendency to push kicks to the right).
The only time I've ever seen a really "hooked" kick was on the only iced kick I've had so far:
My swing was pretty off b/c of the weird angle.
