Re: NBA Live 09 Demo Released, Impressions Here (Xbox 360)

PLAY BY PLAY to go with the longer video i posted, you can see the good, but instantly see something bad.. inconsistency all around.

one of the first drives has a allen contested layup by odom. just perfectly executed one on one coverage. right after that you have ray allen who just missed that layup controlled by me go after the ballhandler at midcourt leaving kobe open. shot is made. GREAT AI. next cpu possession, im stupid again and double kobe with rondo, and kobe returns the favor for fisher. some top notch stuff here.

2:10 into the video is a fastbreak with rondo controlled by me. fisher is containing him nicely, but as fisher comes into contact with gasol, fisher loses him and gasol does nothing. first bad sign. paint interaction is key. animations or ai killed what was happening there. its not the first time in the paint players either jump the wrong direction to get out of position or just dont even know a offensive player exists. brain dead ai at times i would call it, although that sounds harsh lol

2nd half is a garnett post move with the pivot changing, ala nba 2k7. 4 minutes in we see a block by the celtics which leads to a fastbreak. pierce feeds garnett. towards the end you see kobe FACING the ball handler, but the jumping animation turns his BACK to the play INSTANTLY, leaving him reaching for nothing.

4:20 in, we see a allen drive, where the animation seems to just take over, which has kobe sliding around in place. allens hand goes through kobe. AMazing animation though i must say.

next sequence from 4:55 to almost 5:10 you see fisher backing up on rondo, taking 17 seconds off the playclock. You will see the CPU do this atleast once ever 4 minute game.

the next play has a steal by the cpu where gasol dunks it home. I tried my hardest switching players and turboing back.. no luck.. CPU always seems to have 3 back no matter what. are they at 2ks level now with catchup AI?

5:50 in we have a allen set play which results in that huge clipping mishap. Odom is invisible lol.

animations will make or break this game imo. from the blocking which sometimes you feel you have no control over and that pause or break between them actually jumping, you are felt helpless... sliders may surely help somethings though, as always. i have never played a full version of next gen live, so i am highly optimistic this is a game that could be very fun to play.

let me just finish by saying, even with those inconsistencies mentioned above about the video i posted here, i still had fun and it felt like nba basketball.

      Here's Kobe:

      <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Q2JbOVFbyzE&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Q2JbOVFbyzE&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Again, I tried to force the CPU to do things minimally, though I did call some plays rather than hoping that the PG did. This is basically just getting me ramped up for Team Play and Be A Pro modes, because the AI definitely isn't finished in the demo. IF you force the action yourself, you can run some nice plays.

BTW, to set picks without the ball on offense, hold L-trigger, nestle right up against the guy you wanna pick and hope he moves. It will be great with another user who can intelligently use your picks, but I was able to set some to free the CPU (mostly downscreens... they kept turning up/down the court rather than left/right to set picks).

Heh, one of my favorite moments at 3:35... the two high-fives in the background... you can hear the individual slaps... nice little touches. Same with when they clap after a foul or on the bench. LOL @ "Space Cadet" Radmanovic looking backwards at the crowd instead of at the game.

That Jesus Shuttlesworth steal/dunk was probably one of the smoothest-looking plays that I've seen in my time with the demo... animations looked perfect, and he really overplayed that lane to get the interception. As Reuben said, with all the flaws that I'm seeing, I've been playiing this demo exclusively since it came out and keep coming back for more (and am enjoying it).

Sooo, let me get this straight: The shooting system has little to do with pressure sensitivity and actual player control, and more to do with a lining up a green light that we have absolutely no time to pay attention to?!

No, there is definitely timing involved in the releases... and you don't need the meter to know you've released it correctly. I have noticed the arc thing that Beluba mentioned -- like that Kobe 3 in the player lock video, it had hella arc and that is supposed to indicate a perfect release. You'll notice some of the missed shots are low arc, which indicates early/late from what I understand.

The meter is just in practice... you're complaining about nothing.. 2K8 had a much worse shot rating system in practice mode that was totally unreliable (early/perfect/late release meant little).

And no basketball game has anything to do with pressure sensitivity -- it's how long you hold the button...

And finally (after like 3 hours of uploading combined) is the Practice Gym video:
          <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/vXXr1G76ASE&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/vXXr1G76ASE&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Oh! I totally forgot it's only for practice. My bad.

On another note: I finally figured out the mechanics for ankle-breakers and all of the other moves, and I must say, the animations look very nice! I think some people might not figure them out and get frustrated and give up on the game. But just keep pressin' the R trigger in junction with the right stick, combined with the left stick. The hesitation dribbles, fakes, spins-they look sic!

Live 09 came out good, not great. Kind of gave me a 2k feel without actually being 2k, but my only complaint is that when I just let the com. play the PG's still dominate a little bit.

Why does all the body of the players tend to bounce when they're running...and shooting and jogging...it's just so gay. Observe carefully...that's what it feels like when you watch the entire scene.

In stumbleweed's Rondo lock video Fisher completely dominates, with Kobe taking like one shot.

One thing I also noticed from the videos is the fact that many times there is goaltending on rebounds which is not called.

                        Poor defense by Rondo/stumble.

I will start off by saying I am a pure 2k guy but I decided to download the live demo to see how they improved. After playing the demo I still prefer the actual game play and the fluid animations and signature shots of 2k. If you are a live fan, I think you will really enjoy the game this year. Live definitely has some sweet features to their game that 2k may want to take a look at. If I could have the features of live with the gameplay of 2k, I would have one killer game.

-The quick strike cross-over isn't quick at all and it's unresponsive
-All the player models look like offensive linemen (Just look at Ray Allen)
-And everybody keeps talking about sig shot, but so far everybody shoots the same to me which is pretty boring (Kobe shoots like Allen, Garnett shoots like Fisher, etc. All the same to me)

The one thing that is cool is the bodying up with the defender instead of having a lock on D magnet
