Re: Madden 09 Patch #2 Released, Impressions Here
shrewd business move??EA has an exclusive deal with a league that has a virtual monopoly on professional football. Ipso Facto, EA has a virtual monopoly on professional football. But I don't blame them for making a shrewd business move, and I think they still have ample incentive to make a quality game.
the nfl offered the rights to the highest bidder...ea outbid 2k because they had no choice...(and they could)
my opinion is the nfl should never have done this...but they don't really care too much about video games so their only priority was $$.Comment

so are we now to boycott the NFL because there is no other professional football leagues around?EA has an exclusive deal with a league that has a virtual monopoly on professional football. The NFL wanted to go exclusive, for one reason or another, and put their license up for bid. EA outbid 2K for the license.Last edited by countryboy; 09-29-2008, 08:23 AM.I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

Re: Madden 09 Patch #2 Released, Impressions Here
Not at all. I was just pointing out that a virtual monopoly does exist. But I think it's pointless to complain about the business decisions of EA or the NFL. The government sets the rules, and corporations work within those rules to maximizes profits. If someone disagrees with the trademark laws as they relate to videogames, they should write their congressmen. However, given that the graveness of injustices endured by Madden gamers doesn't even rank in the top 1 million of injustices in this world, I wouldn't expect a prompt response.
I do think that trademark laws, and intellectual property laws in general should be reformed. Our founding fathers saw intellectual property rights not as a natural right or an absolute right, but as a restriction of free expression that we should tolerate because it rewards creativity and ultimately serves the common good. But these laws have become more and more excessive, and now all too often serve to protect corporate interests at the expense of the common good.Comment

Re: Madden 09 Patch #2 Released, Impressions Here
(Countryboy had another post that said EA didn't have a monopoly which I am referring to here also)
Actually with EA's market share in sports video games you very much could make an argument that they do have a monopoly. Exclusive licenses obviously help that.
The NFL is the problem in this. I expected better, same with the NCAA. EA likely sees exclusive licenses like every other video game does when they buy a movies rights to be the licensed video game. The NBA was smart in that it has 3 companies promoting the NBA on different platforms. This does a lot to help the game globally, which we know the NBA is more likely to covet than the NFL or MLB.Comment

Re: Madden 09 Patch #2 Released, Impressions Here
Just want to add in my impressions.
First, EA has finally pissed me off to no end. It's now over a month past release date and it's barely playable. I have a 360 btw.
First I had problems with the franchise freezing in season 3 preseason. Then I applied the patch #2 and it STILL froze. So, I started a new franchise. I simulated it through four years. No problem saving. Just for the heck of it, I went back to my old franchise and started it again. It saved. I do not understand...
However, I played through one game just fine on the old franchise. Saved afterwards. Then I play another game completely through. When I exit the game after it's done, it goes to that loading screen. HERE is where it is freezing now. So I can never get back to the main screen to save. This is infuriating. I've simulated past these games and tried playing random games. Again, it freezes at the loading screen.
I am sick of EA's crap. At least with PC games patches are released quickly to address issues. This bureaucratic junk with console patching is absolutely insane. EA's lack of support on this is inexcusable. I've supported EA through a variety of their titles and have had no problems. What the hell is their problem with Madden 09?Comment

No, they really don't. Look, I'm not a fan of EA whatsoever, and I hate the exclusive license. But EA has done nothing to restrict the type of sports gaming content that may be produced for video game consoles. Video game consumers, on the other hand, have done plenty to limit the number of football gaming options they have by continuing to buy the Madden product AND by failing to support any competitor football game that came along.(Countryboy had another post that said EA didn't have a monopoly which I am referring to here also)

Kellogg's just got the exclusive rights to put Michael Phelps on a box of cereal. General Mills had this right in the past, and would put Olympians on Wheaties boxes. Nobody has come along and said that Kellogg's now has a monopoly on cereal production, even if just so happened that 90% of consumers bought the cereal box with Phelps on the cover. That's just good marketing. Moreover, if General Mills makes a better cereal, and people don't buy it because of some license arrangement, can they really complain?
I hate what EA has done to the gaming community, but it isn't "illegal".Comment

I've said this in like four different freezing threads nowJust want to add in my impressions.

WATCH HALFTIME HIGHLIGHTS!!!
PICK 2-3 AND WATCH THEM IN THEIR ENTIRETY.
It sounds dumb, and it is. I don't know why it works but it works.
You sound like you're getting hung up at the same point I was last year. Play a new game and WATCH a few highlights at HALFTIME.
If you're getting freezes at other points in the game or other menus, then this won't help. But if you're getting freezing when you try and exit after a game...try this.Comment

Re: Madden 09 Patch #2 Released, Impressions Here
I think they wanted to do it when 2k put it's game on sale for $19.99 at the start of the cycle. They saw a dangerous precedent that could hurt the value of their brandname where videogames are concerned.
IMO, 2k nailed its own coffin shut when they went this route.Comment

Re: Madden 09 Patch #2 Released, Impressions Here
You are correct...but one thing every one forgets when discussing the exclusive NFL licence is that EA did all they could to get ALL american football...NCAA, Arena, and NFL. So yeah, they had to bid on the NFL because the NFL wanted it but what forced them to go exclusive with NCAA and Arena? And then they just sit on Arena and ESPN for that matter? In addition to there not being an Arena game for this last cycle, there has never been a next gen Arena football game. Now some of you may not care about Arena but while the argument that EA was forced to buy the NFL rights may be true, the have pursued a monopoly on American football by forcing exclusivity with NCAA, Arena, and ESPN...hence the reason they sit on those properties rather than try to recoup at least some of the cost of acquiring them. No, they really don't. Look, I'm not a fan of EA whatsoever, and I hate the exclusive license. But EA has done nothing to restrict the type of sports gaming content that may be produced for video game consoles. Re: Madden 09 Patch #2 Released, Impressions Here
Impressions? Well gave it 1 more try over the weekend. post patch new roster update......
SAME pile O trash. EA see sig......MADDEN 09 is RUBBISH in its purest from! Those who enjoy, power to ya. But i am done with this arcade GLITCHFEST!
Best of luck in 2010. EA, if you cant take negative feedback...TOO BAD!! your game has been COMPLETE TRASH for 4 friggin years now! Think about that. In 4 years you have managed to make trash consistantly. How do you feel when you look at your game? I want to know. Seriously? How the hell would you feel, and more importantly, what would you say if you were in a room with ALL those upset?
"Better luck next year."
"we had some problems and we will improve."
"we can only do so much..."
Regardless of the answer, whatever it may be, is WRONG!
The only correct response would be to ADMIT you cut corners. ADMIT you dont really do much. ADMIT you have NO CLUE to how football is played. ADMIT YOU COULD REALLY CARE LESS!!
Those would at least be HONEST answers. ALL EA and the MADDEN staff have done over the last 4 years was to LIE to all of us. The only ones happy are the cheezers and the casual fans who in all actuality could care less. SO FITTINGly THEY ARE YOUR TARGET AUDIENCE!!
i am done!!! pROVE ME WRONG EA....PLEASE!!Comment
