The Edmonton Oilers announced the signing of a new GM today, former Moscow Dynamo GM and former Russian player Niko Baron, will take over as GM of the Edmonton Oilers. "I'm very excited to come to a team like Edmonton, a team with crazy amounts of potential, and very good young players. I hope to further improve the team, by making a decent amount of trades, and possibly signing some free-agents. We have an excellent core group of young forwards and defenseman, that over time really can become stars in the NHL. The major place I look to first improve the team is goaltending. We like what we have in Mathieu Garon, and I'm afraid Dwayne Roloson's days may be numbered in Edmonton....."

    TRADE UPDATE

Minutes after being introduced as the Edmonton Oilers new GM, Niko Baron has made a very interesting trade, with the Chicago Blackhawks.

    OILERS TRADE

    • Defenseman Steve Staios

    BLACKHHAWKS TRADE

    • Defenseman Brian Campbell

Campbell brings alot of offensive prowess to the Oilers blueline, and is a tremendous acquisition. He is a skilled puck-moving defenseman, that has a decent shot, and is good on the powerplay.

Baron was alos quick to make a deal with the Montreal Canadiens, once again involving defenseman.

    OILERS TRADE

    • Defenseman Denis Grebeshkov
    • Defenseman Jason Strudwick

    CANADIENS TRADE

    • Defenseman Andrei Markov

Markov is also a very skilled offensive defeseman, and should work well with either Lubomir Visnovsky or Brian Campbell.

Awesome dude. Edmonton is one of my favorite teams, looking forward to this.

The defense looks like it's going to to be a scoring beast with Visnovsky, Campbell, and Markov.

OILERS INK TEEMU SELANNE TO 2 YEAR DEAL

The Edmonton Oilers have once again improved their team immensley, by adding veteran sniper Teemu Selanne. Selanne became a free-agent at season's end, and before the Anaheim Ducks could clear cap space in attempt to resign the right-winger, the Oilers offered him a lucrative two-year contract, worth around $5.575 million per season. "I'm very excited to come to Edmonton, a place with a lot of history. The team has been improved to an unimaginable degree in just the past 24 hours. I believe I'm joining a serious contender for the Cup. It was a no brainer for me to sign here, there is a very talented group of young players, along with highly skilled veterans. Also, I get a chance to play with some former teamates of mine, Dustin Penner, and Ilya Bryzgalov. I cannot wait for the season to start." - said Selanne after arriving in Edmonton. GM Niko Baron had this to say: "Teemu is an excellent player, and a great leader, who i belive can help with the young guys, and lead us very deep into the playoffs. As far as I'm concerned, Teemu is the undisputed captain of this hockey club. He can still score and produce points at a very good pace, and he is an excellent asset to our team" Selanne is expected to skate on the Oilers first line with Ales Hemsky and Patrick Marleau.

I haven't been Washington on 09, does Thorne still pronounce Semin as semen? I really hope they fixed that.

This team is a monster. Nice work.

Edmonton Oilers head coach Craig MacTavish has announced the team's captains for the start of the '08-'09 regular season. The captains were determined by players votes, along with opinions and suggestions from the rest of the coaching staff.

                      CAPTAIN

                      Teemu Selanne

                      ASSISTANT CAPTAIN

                      Ales Hemsky

                      ALTERNATE CAPTAIN

                      Craig Rivet

MacTavish said that the captains could change throughout the season, based on what the players think about each other, and the leadership of others.

OILERS MAKE DEAL WITH KINGS; ACQUIRE ANZE KOPITAR

Potential Superstar/Franchise Center Anze Kopitar is the newest Oiler

The Edmonton Oilers added a tremendous amount of potential, leadership and skill by making a deal with the Los Angeles Kings for Anze Kopitar. Kings GM Dean Lombardi felt that he wouldn't be able to re-sign Kopitar before seasons end, because the center had indicated that he wanted to see what teams were interested in him, come RFA time. GM Niko Baron instantly tendered a deal to try and acquire Kopitar, and forwarded it to Lombardi via text message. Andrew Cogliano and the Oilers 1st Round Draft pick are now property of the Los Angeles Kings. Cogliano has tremendous amounts of potential to, which helped make the decsicion easier for Lombardi, to send Kopitar to Edmonton. GM of the Oilers Niko Baron commented on the trade. "Anze adds so much skill, leadership, and potential looking towards the future. He has an endless amount of potential, and there is no telling how good he may be in the near future. Putting him on a line with vetran Teemu Selanne, and developing young star Ales Hemsky, gives Anze the tools necessary to hopefully become an extremely dominant player in the NHL. He can better learn how to play the game under the leadership of Teemu, and can develop into a powerful 1-2 punch scoring combo with Hemsky. I cannot believe we've added such a skilled player like Kopitar to our already deeply talented roster. This move certainly will help us reach the playoffs, and hopefully will allow us to play very, very deep on into the playoffs. A Stanley Cup is the main goal and dream for this dynasty, to try and return the team to its gloriful days of Gretzky, and the Stanley Cups.

                        TO LOS ANGELES

                        • Center Andrew Cogliano

                        • Edmonton's 2009 1st Round Pick

Anze Kopitar is expected to center Ales Hemsky and Teemu Selanne on the Oilers first line in the season opener @ the Pepsi Center against the Colorado Avalanche. He will also be centering the 1st powerplay unit, 1st penalty-kill unit, and will be Edmonton's 1st designated shooter in shootouts.

A lot to give up, but for Kopitar it's worth it. Especially since that will likely be a late 1st.

I like Teemu as captain as well.

Thanks thrashman, I'll be updating on the 1st game soon. It killed me to give up Cogliano, but in the end, I'm sure it'll be worth it, especially for Kopitar.
