I agree with all of the OP's points. The biggest thing to me however is the game just doesn't represent real football. Its more of a backyard football game to me. While adding chain gangs, refs, and better presentation would be nice, it would in no way make this game playable to me. The game engine is broken. I know the madden guys don't like the term "engine", but I have heard other developers use that term plenty. Really the simplest analogy would be a car's engine. You can take a Ferrari and polish it and make it look beautiful, but if the engine doesn't work then is it really a car in the true sense of the word?

Is madden really a football game? IMO no.
