      Re: NBA 2K9 Impressions (PC)

My jaw has been on the floor from the moment I fired this game up, it looks and plays amazingly. I've got Dead Space and Far Cry 2 just sitting there right now because all I want to do is play this game.

I haven't purchased a basketball game in a couple years and this one was well worth the wait (and price $20? Oh yea!). The presentation is insanely detailed with end of quarter highlights, individual player highlights at the end of games, Top 3 plays, Sprite Slam Cam, player spotlights, and the way the arenas feel alive. I mean when I put my headphones on it's like I'm in the game. The crowd reacts realistically to the action and when you get on a run they get geeked and all the CPU can do is call a time out. Likewise when you start getting handled they get dead silent and I even saw people leaving the arena in a game I couldn't win in the 4th. In this game I feel rewarded at the end of the game when I can watch all the highlights, they truly are amazing.

The gameplay is also stellar and the CPU is smart and aggressive. If you give them space or don't respect them they will torch you. Chalmers and Beasley ate me alive when I played the Heat, I couldn't stop them. Likewise with Lebron, he was catching oops and dunking on me all day and when he wasn't he was rebounding and getting assists. He filled up the stat sheet just like you'd expect him to in real life.

The graphics almost bring a tear to my eye. I'm running the game at 1920x1200 with everything maxed and WOW is all I can say. Night and day difference between this and the PS3 version(demo). The crowd, benches, coaches, and reflective arena floors all look amazing, but the real star of the show are the player models. These models are so good and the animations are so spot on it's kind of scary. When Lebron was schooling me he did this absolutely disgusting windmill dunk over one of my guys and I just had to pause the game grab some saltine crackers and a sprite and get back to the game, lol.

I could go on and on, but there isn't enough time in the day. Fantastic game.

Can you use FRAPS to capture video? Like the end of the game highlights? just wondering.

Got this today, not really played it too indepth, but I like what I saw.

For those worrying about specs, I run the game on the following with this PC:

            AMD 64 3700
            2GB Ram
            7800 GTX 256Mb

Ive got 4 x AA (highest available to me in game), then I have everything turned on High, expect Crowd and Sideline Models at Medium (ive not tried upping these yet, I may do so but they look good enough for background graphics) - thats at 1280 x 1024 res and id say its easily as good if not better than 2K8 looked on my 360.

Didnt check what FPS I got, but it dosent skip/tear/stutter etc - smooth stuff

I got this game a couple days ago...just never said anything.

I play on the highest settings at 1680x1050 and the graphics are easily the best I've seen in a basketball video game for any system. There is a little bit of choppyness on my pc with

                  2 gb ram
                  8800gts 320 mb

I am. You have to go into the User Profile menu and create one, then edit the User profile settings from there and select your preferred position.

Same, it's not like frame rate issues, but more this skippy jitteriness, right? It doesn't matter what settings I have it in, I'm getting these jitters.

                        Core 2 Duo 2.66 @ 800
4 GB ram (3.25 effective with WinXP)
                        ATI Radeon HD 3850 256MB

I have both the 360 and PC versions, and the control in the PC version seems quicker and more responsive then the 360 version. The hop step is now performed with the shoot button while moving. I'm not sure if holding turbo causes the hop spin, I haven't tested it thoroughly. The quick pick and roll button from the 360(B button on the controller) is now the crossover button, while the old hop step button(Y) is now the spin button. The triggers/bumpers are inverted, so R1 is turbo, and L1 is backdown/sizeup. One thing that bothers me is that the thumbstick buttons are not mapped tothe controller, and I have not figured out a way to map them. That causes an inability to bring up a players card or save a replay without using the keyboard.

The game runs great on my rig with everything on it's highest setting, except for antialiasing, which really isn't needed at 1680x1050. Minor slowdowns to the tune of 30-35 fps have occurred during the substitution overlay and the wide camera views showing the entire arena, but it runs at 60 fps on Vsync most of the time, and at about 70+ with it off. Users with AMD cpu's are reporting laggy, or low-framerate menus, but there is something in the readme about downloading a driver for AMD dual core cpu's and I wonder if they have read it.

The gameplay is pretty much identical to that of the 360 version. Without slider tweaks there are alot of points in the paint.

You can browse through the menus with the mouse, keyboard, or game controller. However, if you bring up a replay with the controller, you cannot use the keyboard to save the replay. You must bring the replay up with the keyboard to save it.

It's easy to exchange settings, replays, rosters, exported teams, associations, and user profiles. You just have to upload the file so someone can download it. I am guessing exchanging the user profile is the only way for a multiplayer experience at this juncture.

AMD Dual-Core Optimizer Version 1.1.4 - The AMD Dual-Core Optimizer can help improve some PC gaming video performance by compensating for those applications that bypass the Windows API for timing by directly using the RDTSC (Read Time Stamp Counter) instruction. Applications that rely on RDTSC do not benefit from the logic in the operating system to properly account for the affect of power management mechanisms on the rate at which a processor core's Time Stamp Counter (TSC) is incremented. The AMD Dual-Core Optimizer helps to correct the resulting video performance effects or other incorrect timing effects that these applications may experience on dual-core processor systems, by periodically adjusting the core time-stamp-counters, so that they are synchronized .I installed this patch from amd.com and it seem to help me with those jitters.might help if you if u have and cpu

Ive played about 5 games so far in Association. I havent tweaked the sliders or anything. Ive been playing on Pro level with 5 minute quarters.

                            my results so far:
1st: the graphics and presentation are simply amazing. I want to get a monitor with better resolution to really see how this game looks. Currently I run the game on 1280* and even then the game is beautiful to look at.

I havent experienced any lag what so ever. I have 3GB of RAM on my box and the pc runs at 3.4mhz.

                            with the sliders unchanged:
Im shooting about 48%, my opponents shoot at about 55% but thats because I suck on defense so far.
average 20 minute score I average 47 points the opponents have scored anywhere between 45-60 points in 20 minutes.

steals in 20 minutes are about 4-6 for me and the opponents.

Blocks are a bit high for team omputer controlled teams. they average about 8 blocks in 20 minutes. I average about 2.
with Blocking its all about timing. Ive noticed that players react to the ball differently when going up for a block. I get called for more fouls than anything.

scoring in the paint is a bit to easy on the default settings. Midrange and long range shooting are spot on so far. Ray Allen is currently shooting the 3 at a 38% clip.

stealing the ball can be a bit tricky. reach to much on a good ball handler and he seems to go right past you. It all about positioning the body on the defender.
bigger players are slower to react to everything.

Both teams tend to take a lot of shots. It doesnt seem that way but when you analyze the box scores the # of shots seem to be a bit high. In 20 minutes Im taking about 50 shots and the CP is in the same ball park(maybe someone can tell me what teh average # of shots in an NBA game is)

If you were to tweak any of the sliders it would be
inside scoring: Id lower that setting
                            steals setting: maybe lower it
                            fouls: Id up the fouls
                            Fatigue:Id up the fatigue.
Speed: for true sim players maybe lower the speed of the game so less shots could be taken. However the pace of the game is spot on.

Im still getting used to the controllers, but so far this is what I have noticed. This is the toughest part.

Ill eventually up the gameplay level.

Currently Im 0-4 with a fantasy drafted team.

again this game is simply beautiful to look at.

if you have a lcd/hdtv attached to your pc then you should be able to get higher resolution. so I suggest checking your video card, or change the resolution settings on the video card. I have the same video card as you. Im running my game on a 1280 setting and it looks great. I want to get an HD monitor so I could max this game out.
