Re: NHL 09 Patch Released (360/PS3) -- Impressions here please

Has anyone had an trouble with the controls not working at times?

Last night i was playing a game against Florida and it went to overtime where i lost 3-2 after giving up a goal i had no control over. I was in Florida's zone and lost the puck but i was close enough to stick lift so i pressed X and nothing happened so i kept chasing Bouwmeester and pressed X again but still nothing, eventually they were in my zone and i tried to poke check but it never did anything either so i tried a check and hit the Florida player but the puck stayed in the zone so when my forward tried to close down the point man and get a poke check in it never worked, the poke and stick lift werent doing anything and needless to say Florida scored.

I had no way to stop the goal, really spoiled what was a competive game up till then i outshot them 29-27 and had scored with just 2 minutes remaining to tie the game at 2-2. Its like my controls switched off to let the CPU score, really disappointing.

    Has this happened to anyone?

yeah i've had it happen to individual players including my online BAP. only happens rarely and not sure what causes it. i think diving on the ice might help break out of it sometimes.

Yes, I was playing a rare (for me) offline game the other night and I could not pass the puck with one of my defensemen. Eventually the CPU stole it from me, but I recovered it and stupidly passed it back to the same guy. Once again, he could not pass, so this time I had my wits about me and flipped the puck into the bench. Next time he was on the ice, everything was fine...

I am not sure what you are looking for in a hockey game but my best advice would be to rent them both and see which one you like better. You are going to get votes both ways and it can get a little crazy so just go out and rent both.
Thanks, I have rented 2K and liked it overall, but my local Blockbuster doesn't rent EA NHL 09 for some reason, so I haven't been able to compare. I usually just buy both, but this year my wife and I have set a stricter budget
EDIT: After reading more about post patch I am not so sure I want to get NHL 09

This won't help for those that want to play online, but you could remove the patch by clearing your hard drive cache, and just reinstalling the patches for games you want. Just make sure you are not online when you boot up NHL 09. Of course, you're screwed if you want to play online

I have EA NHL 08. Are there any new rosters for it anywhere? I did a search but came up empty. Is EA NHL 09 that much better, and in what way? I would like the new rosters, but maybe I should just wait and buy a new hockey game next year since I am a casual NHL fan.

I play 09 for EASHL.This alone made it worth the purchase for me.

I am loving this game post patch. I don't know, maybe I don't know enough about Hockey to notice the flaws that other are seeing but I have nothing to complain about.

I may not be as good as some other members here, but I can score as well as the cpu. I have no money goals and even if I thought I did I would not go to them over and over again (Wheres the fun in that).

My main gripe pre patch was a lack of penalties and that has been addressed and I could not be happier with this game right now.

this is the worst nhl game i can remember in a long time i enjoyed 07 and 08 alot more. I am so irritated at two things if I cant find some way of fixing these things with sliders I am skipping a hockey game this year<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o></o>

1 - Lower hooking penalty to 1 or zero and the AI won't push the player in front of the net anymore.

2 - raise goalie cover puck to 6 and no more rebounds.

Catch up logic can encompass a lot of things....but I think all EA games are programmed at the higher levels to create " high drama " using the cheats so that the AI makes things close enough and frustating enough to keep the consumer playing.

All EA games have a very similar flow/feel to them and the way that the AI reacts to certain situations is the same with all their games. Basically it's the same scripted story just with different sports.

For example whenever I play one of their sports games it feels just like I'm playing any of the others.....not really any difference in how the AI reacts to certain similar situations across the board.

This EA formula is harded coded into the basic sports engine and is why you have so many identical scripted AI behavioral patterns throughout their sports genre.

For some reason the cpu is more competitive against me now, while not really capitalizing on weak or cheap goals. I can't really explain it. Never had a problem with goal variety with the patch either, so I'm not sure what people are talking about when they say that ways to score are now limited.

The goals i am losing in this game are a joke, playing good defense just isnt rewarded, i dont mind losing the odd strange goal but if the AI wants to score it just feels like it will do whatever it takes to do it.

these are in the same game

I also had one of those goals that never crossed the line given against me, thats what started the AI on its momentum. it really is sickening.

Well you reply as if I sucked , the thing is that I haven´t lost a game, it´s the way the game is played. I still win , as I think I have said a few times. And maybe you feel stick down on dekeing players is more realistic than a sticklift?

Post patch sucks and all it does is benefitting bad players . Dekes got more effective because fools can´t pass and get good lanes. Stick lifts were too effective before, but stickwork now on D is pathetic in comparison. And fools like the checks so they made focus more on that, so now it looks more like bumpercar action on the ice, and the small puck loosing checks are so annoying(because they happen all the time).

You can talk all you want, but what EA did is to encourage players to take the puck to the crease , all the way. It´s much more % effective and with the dekes it´s so much easier.
Pre patch, chances weren´t as concentrated to the front of the net and as close to the net.

I can still score varied, but this game CLEARLY benefit you if you are right by the net.

ANd my problem is not that I have to resort to cheapness, it´s that EA benefits cheapness with this new patch, and online many people resort to the cheap, and now games are pathetic online compared to before.

And it has to be said, this patch online benefits bad players. They still loose, but the games are boring. ANd hardly realistic.

As for the uber deking I simply get in front and put the stick down and they lose the puck everytime or don't go kamikaze and try to hit everyone.

As for the s moves from the boards all you have to do is stand there and wait and when they come back over the goal line put the sitck down and they lose the puck again and again.

You can defend these tactics. If you are winning game in and game out then why are you complaining? Is it because you can only score this way yourself? I have scored many different ways so I am not sure what has been limited. I've scored from distance and in close without having to resort to anything cheap.
