    I Need Defensive Help

I am not one to blame the game for CPU comeback AI. I just figure that I must be doing something wrong on the defensive end to allow the CPU to comeback in the 3rd period.

I have lost my last 3 games where I was leading 4-0, 3-1 and 3-0.I have to be doing something wrong on defense.

I am not the most knowledgeable Hockey person in the world so that's why I am asking for help.

What should I be setting my defensive strategies to to ensure (Help) me to hold on to a lead late in the game? Thanks

    Re: I Need Defensive Help

I'd have to suggest putting your offensive strategy to "protect the lead". I'd also be less aggressive on the forecheck (I believe it's a 1-2-2 formation) and collapse around the net on defense, forcing the cpu to shoot from outside. Also, be sure to take control of one of your d-men in front of the net since because when you let the cpu control them, they play like clueless 'tards and forget to keep the front of the net clear and cover the slot. In addition, really watch out for the cpu bringing the puck out from behind the net or from the corner. They just love to start skating across the front of the crease, causing your goalie to go down prematurely and leave the top of the net wide open. Don't forget that the goalies are also very susceptible to sharp angle shots since they don't cover the post very well.

    Good luck!

Just another tidbit to go along with the other post, don't be afraid to ice the puck. An icing call is much better than a goal against. Too many times, I see people fail to clear the zone.

On this subject, one of my EASHL teammates clued me into this handy trick. If you pull back on the R-stick like you're going for a slapper (it only has to be a little bit) then pass the puck with the R-trigger, you'll be able to pass the puck in the direction you push with the L-stick.

This means you can "manually" pass... No more passing to a teammate with guys on him in the slot in your own zone when you really want to move it up the boards! I've had some nice bank passes behind the goal to my defensive partner and to spring a forward past a pinching CPU d-man (as they often do when trailing late). Try it out when you need to put the puck into space as opposed to making a direct pass to a teammate...

Mmmmm......delicious tip. Gotta try this one out. It's one of my big beefs with this game. I just love how I can pass to anywhere on the ice and perform bank passes in 2k9 in comparison to 09. Thanks, Qb!

Sweet bank pass, tgalv! I too was able to do a few nice passes like that with this tip. Unfortunately, my game got derailed by the DDE.

Not a problem guys. Wish I could watch EASW vids at work, but alas, the firewall wins this round. That teammate I mentioned (didn't even know he was an OS "lurker" -- skb182) also said that simply holding the puck out to the side may trigger the same effect.

I remember messing around with passing while pushing the R-stick to the side and while it seemed to make a crisper pass (same way it makes for a harder shot if you go to the side then roll forward), it seemed unpredictable. Perhaps that was because it was going where I pushed? Need to investigate further...

I also have been using that pass. I mainly use it to chip the puck in to the zone. If a d-man is being pressured, it is safer to use that pass and put the puck behind the net, than to possible turn it over on a regular pass.

                      Re: I Need Defensive Help

Puck possession is the hot new thing in the NHL. First off you play defense by not playing it at all. Hold on to the puck as much as possible yourself. When you can't hold on to it, don't be afraid to dump it and pull 4-5 guys back on the backcheck. As was said, pick the defensive 1-2-2 and set the conservative attack.

If you keep your attack on aggressive, the CPU will rip you apart. This is where people think "comeback AI" is, but it makes sense. When they start upping the pressure, you have to counter with defense, not more attacking.

Stop always trying to force the puck and make low percentage plays, especially when you have the lead. If you are in the zone and under a ton of pressure, dump it and fall back. Force the other team to fight through your entire team and don't give up the odd-man rush.

If you force a pass and it is picked off, you just sent the CPU on an odd man rush. Avoid this by playing smart. Make plays when you can, and dump when you can't. You can still attack the net when you have an open play, but don't force it.

Tons of NHL teams play like this now (and it is boring to watch, but effective).

Once in the zone, it is all about stopping the CPU from getting the puck into the front of the net and slot. Here you have to rely on your teammate AI here, and sometimes that doesn't work out

Learn to use all the defensive controls, poke check, pass block, stick lift, and hitting. Learn which ones work in which situations. I feel the pass block is under-used. It can be very handy. Stand in between the CPU player with the puck and someone open and go into pass block. You'll see the CPU react and probably not try the pass. Other than that, control a d-man and get on anyone open in front as best as possible, and hope your teammates do something useful (that guy in the high slot is the one they always forget about and burns you).

Beyond that, there's no real secret to it, get on the player with the puck and regain control somehow.

The biggest mistake many make is chasing the puck rather than playing defense. You can be highly aggressive on D, and I'm sure a lot of people do it, but at first you should play more conservative. Avoid chasing people into the corners and other non-scoring areas. The CPU loves to throw the puck to the guy you just left open in front of the net.

Focus on the guys without the puck as much as the puck carrier. Think ahead of them and take away the play before it opens up. Finishing your check on a guy who just passed the puck past your for an easy goal doesn't do you any good.

                          Re: I Need Defensive Help

I had the same problem, the cpu constantly tying the game on me in the last minute. I took two simple steps and I've improved my winning percentage considerably:

                          1. Like a guy above said, DO NOT go chasing guys around when the CPU is in your zone. It is tempting because they will be whizzing the puck all around the zone and will have guys moving all over the place, but you really have to hold your position and wait for your opportunity to get the puck...and when you do...

                          2. FLIP DUMP. This is very effective. Just flip dump the puck out of your zone the first chance you get. Don't try to be a hero and start a break out. Too often the hyper-aggressive AI will either intercept your pass or check you off the puck and then you'll be stuck out of position. Just get the damn puck out of the zone. The flip dump takes a good amount of time off the clock as it's a slow moving puck that the cpu sometimes has trouble handling on the other end. Sometimes if you send a guy you can even pick up a bouncing puck and skate it into their zone for some more time killing and maybe even a shot on goal. Basically, if you're a goal or two ahead in the last two minutes of the game treat it as if you were trying to kill a powerplay.

These two techniques have really worked wonders for my ability to hold onto leads at the end of games. Sure, the CPU still sometimes pops one on me, but more often than not I'm able to hold them using this method.
