I understand backing up the play on a base hit to right with a runner on first (or fly ball to right with a runner on second), but never actually covering the bag. Not only that, but it looks to be the first baseman in that shot since there is no one else at first and he is making an offline throw (which I think is incredible to see after a few too many perfect throws last year). So the play is coming from that side of the field, which seems appropriate enough... but I don't see this as a cut-off play unless it was originally to home, in which the pitcher should be backing up home. I'm just trying to think of what scenario this would be.

Does anyone know exactly what kind of situation would warrant this? Just curious.
I know this is an extremely late response, but in the picture, there must have been a hit to left field with someone running from second to home. In that case, the 3rd baseman (Evan Longoria in this picture) covers the throw from left field, and it is the pitcher's responsibility to cover third. Longoria clearly cut off the throw and tried to cut down Victorino at third.

The screens look amazing. I just want to know if they have all team control this year. I didnt see it mentioned so I am doubting it again this year. 40 man rosters and Sept call-ups is huge though.Cant wait

I thought the shortstop would cover third and the pitcher would back up home? Either way, that is a pretty bad throw for Longoria to be way over there to cut it off.

I guess it doesn't really matter in the end, chances are they just put some players in while playing some debug mode and took the picture. I was just wondering if, in baseball terms, there was an actual play that would warrant something like this.

I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

That's correct the shortstop would cover 3rd, pitcher would back up home. I was thinking a bunt maybe, but Longo wouldn't be on the first base side of the mound. Sometimes a pitcher may cover third on a bunt depending on where the bunt is placed and everything. Like if its bunted hard down 3rd, and there's a bunt and run on, and the runner from first keeps going around second. If Longoria fielded the ball pitcher would have to cover 3rd, because second baseman would be going to first and shortstop to second most likely. All depending ont he bunt coverages though.

                    6. For game play? Not important to me. What they have is fine.
How can people say collision detection is not important? So your saying that it's ok for the ball to go through the pitcher when the batter hits the ball towards the pitcher? It happens all the time in 08 and it's annoying and needs to be addressed.

Honestly 08 was a solid game so any impreovement is cool with me. I think after reading what they added they did enough for me to buy this game.

Do you play Madden? , man that franchise sucks now, and why cause they changed to much. We dont need for that to happen to MLB the Show. The core is great!

Just keep fine tuning it, add more animations, and personality.

                      BAM Great Game!!!

Okay, I don't know what's up with those screencaps, but they obviously had some bad capture card. Since when has Murphy's Fathead been plastered into Citi Field's outfield wall? (what I mean by that is the lack of sense of depth)

There's something terribly wrong with that capture, from the surrounding jagged edges to the inability to necessarily determine close objects from far ones.

As someone said earlier, the best evidence of this game's beauty will be in glorious HD videos.

And the same thing is said after the first few screen shots are released every year..In a lot fewer words.

Re: MLB '09: The Show Preview with Screenshots (ESPN Videogames)

Oh, I wasn't talking about the game's graphics as much as the site's screencaps. The game won't look like that, and you know that.

At the same time, yeah, I'm a big visuals whore, and with next-gen gaming, I sort of have a small pet peeve when we don't get anti-aliasing and 60 FPS. Of course, those are impossible expectations with every game (2K games included), but wouldn't it be nice?

These jaggies, however, are not pertaining to the game. These were just terribly uploaded or something. Something looks really weird about the shots, like I said, with the lack of "depth" in the shots as well. Something just doesn't look right, which makes me that more anxious to see the real game in motion instead of seeing these false mishaps.

As for last year, I believe my question was as to whether the Ramirez screenshot was touched up to help hide the jaggies in the actual game or if that was an in-game effect from the replay cam. I think it was taken the wrong way, and I hope that doesn't happen again.

But yeah, I tend to bicker sometimes. It's important to point out negatives as much as positives, that way you can let them know in which ways they're going the right direction and in which ways they can make it look even better for next year.
