Re: Some Harris Voters hadn't even watched Utah play before last Friday
As reported in the LA times:
Utah attorney general investigating BCS for possible antitrust violation
Utah's attorney general is investigating the Bowl Championship Series for a possible violation of federal antitrust laws after undefeated Utah team was left out of the national title game for the second time in five years.
Atty. Gen. Mark Shurtleff contends the BCS unfairly puts schools like Utah, which is a member of a conference without an automatic bid to the lucrative bowl games, at a competitive and financial disadvantage.
"We've established that from the very first day, from the very fist kickoff in the college season, more than half of the schools are put on an unlevel playing field," Shurtleff said today. "They will never be allowed to play for a national championship."
A message left with BCS administrator Bill Hancock was not immediately returned.
The BCS is designed to pit the top two teams against each other in a national championship game each year. It uses a complicated formula based on human polls and computer rankings to determine who plays in that game, which Shurtleff contends is biased.
The Associated Press crowns its own national champion based on a poll of sports writers who are not bound to vote for the winner of the BCS title game. Many fans are clamoring for voters to put Utah -- the nation's only undefeated team -- in the No. 1 spot in the final poll.
On Friday, Utah became the first team from a non-BCS conference to win two BCS bowls after it upset No. 4 Alabama 31-17 in the Sugar Bowl. Utah also beat Pittsburgh in the 2004 Fiesta Bowl to complete an undefeated season.
Shurtleff said his office is still in the initial stages of reviewing the Sherman Antitrust Act to see if a lawsuit can be filed. To succeed in a lawsuit, he would have to prove a conspiracy exists that creates a monopoly.
Oklahoma and Florida will play in the BCS title game on Thursday.
Shurtleff said he prefers that BCS officials and university presidents solve the problem of excluding some schools from a national title game by creating a playoff system, but added he's committed to doing whatever it takes to produce change.Pitchers and Catchers Report; Life Worth Living AgainComment

Re: Some Harris Voters hadn't even watched Utah play before last Friday
While I agree, not even watching one Utah game is a completely different story and is unacceptable.
Utah @ Michgan, Oregon State @ Utah, and TCU @ Utah were all nationally televised games. How could they not have even seen those games? At least for some of the posters here, they had a background of Utah and an ability to make a reasonable judgment from watching a few of their games. The Harris poll voters, meanwhile, probably had no idea about the team they were voting for and were probably copying each other's votes.
Have you checked the credentials of some of the Harris Poll voters?
I agree its hard to excuse not seeing a single Utah game. But let's remember games are regionalized & played simultaneously. An argument can be made that they gambled who would be a factor in the end & watched those schools instead of Utah. It wouldn't fly w/me, but it could be stated w/some credence.
As I said earlier, we had about 25 posters each week voting on our own personal top 10 & the best the Utes finished was 7th. I'm including myself. So we did Utah worse than the bcs did. They would make my personal #1 now. We just can't fairly point the finger @ the voters w/out taking note of our own misjudgement.Originally posted by VP Richard M. Glad to see someone is at least trying, though realistically we all know nothing will come of it."You make your name in the regular season, and your fame in the postseason." - Clyde Frazier

Re: Some Harris Voters hadn't even watched Utah play before last Friday
how about you boot the Big East from the BCS and add the Mountain West?
The fact that college football is so heavily dominated by what goes on east of the Rockies is stupid. Remember when the Pac-10 sucked this year? I mean, because the fact that ABC and ESPN rarely placed them on television had nothing to do with public perception of how the Pac-10 was viewed. But boy oh boy, I'm supposed to get into how awesome the Big XII and Big Ten are. There's no reason the Big East deserves an auto bid. And the fact that the Big Ten sucks up two bids literally every single year is horrendous. It sucks if you don't get those big bowl payouts...but constructing four BCS Bowl games and a BCS Championship game harms college football. You've completely diluted the Cotton Bowl (which, if you are going to do a five game rotation, why isn't the Cotton Bowl involved), you make the Holiday Bowl diluted, and so on and so forth.Free LSUFan2004 and GoDevilsASU!

Re: Some Harris Voters hadn't even watched Utah play before last Friday
Even if you get a playoff system, it's still going to be based on what polls say.
How about you, you know, get voters that watch the games? Because that's an easier fix than just come up with arbitrary concepts of who and who isn't deserving of playoff bids.Free LSUFan2004 and GoDevilsASU!

Well what's the point of putting MWC in the BCS and removing the Big East? Why did you mention it?"You make your name in the regular season, and your fame in the postseason." - Clyde Frazier

I really don't believe he's attempting to make a point. Kind of like a yard dog. Lot of barking, but really nothing to say.Originally posted by VP Richard M. NixonI always remember that whatever I have done in the past, or may do in the future, Duke University is responsible one way or the other.

Re: Some Harris Voters hadn't even watched Utah play before last Friday
That means, as the Mountain West does not receive the same amount of cash as the auto-bid conferences, they get half what the supposed big six do. A few million dollars more spread to those teams, over enough of a time, might help galvanize them.
Which, if people want to take a Utah more seriously, them being from an autobid conference would probably help, as it would be considered more important for them to go undefeated than some other teams slogging their way through one or two loss seasons.Free LSUFan2004 and GoDevilsASU!

The Big East deserves their BCS bid far more than the ACC or the recent Big 10.Comment
