Avalanched! Bruins Roll in Season Opener 5-2

Kessel and Savard celebrate Kessel's first of two goals.

Denver (AP) - The Boston Bruins opened their season with a bang tonight in Colorado as they rolled over the defenseless Avalanche in a 5-2 rout. The game got off to an inconspicuous start for the Bs as Avs grinder Ian LaPerriere scored the first goal of the game on Thomas just 4:26 into the contest. In fact, the low scoring LaPerriere tallied both of the Avs goals as he scored a shorty with 35 seconds to go in the game. However, between this two goals the Bs scored 5 unanswered and absolutely dominated on both ends of the ice.

The Avalanche hurt themselves big time, particularly in the second period, with penalties. The Bruins would score twice on the power play, both in the second period. The Avs committed a total of 4 penalties in the 2nd period alone and 6 total on the game. Marc Savard started off the scoring in the 1st period beating Budaj stick side for his first of the campaign. Blake Wheeler added a shorty late in the 1st period. The floodgates would open in the 2nd period as Ryder scored just two minutes in beating Budaj glove side low. Kessel scored the next two goals for the Bs.

The Avs finally pulled goaltender Peter Budaj after Kessel's second of the night with 4:23 to go in the 2nd period. The Avs backup goaltender Andrew Raycroft was perfect the rest of the way stopping all 19 shots he faced.

The Bs outhustled the Avs all night as shown by the huge difference in time on attack. The Bruins got off 41 shots on the goaltender tandem of Budaj and Raycroft with a total time on attack of 10:36. Colorado managed just 24 shots with 6:41 on attack.

Re: Lan's Boston Bruins (NHL 09)

            Bruins Acquire Keith Tkachuk

Tkachuk fills a void left by the injured Marco Sturm as a left handed shot.

Boston (AP) - Peter Chiarelli has pulled the trigger on a trade acquiring 16 year veteran Keith Tkachuk from the St. Louis Blues in exchange for Providence defenseman Matt Lashoff and Boston forward Petteri Nokelainen. The versatile left handed shooter will provide some flexibility for the Bs as he can play both left wing and center and will likely join Bergeron's line as the left winger.

The Bruins lose a promising young defenseman in Matt Lashoff who performed well in his limited experience in Boston as well as a gritty grinding forward in Nokelainen. Of the two, Lashoff has the most upside. The Bs were willing to make the move for Tkachuk due to the fact that he is on the final year of his contract. He is not expected to be resigned in the offseason as the Bruins are right up against the salary cap as it is.

The Bruins lines for their upcoming matchup against the Wild will look as such:

            Lucic-Savard-Kessel
            Wheeler-Krejci-Ryder
            Tkachuk-Bergeron-Kobasew
            Axelsson-Yelle-Thornton

Tkachuk will switch from his customary #7 to #27 as the #7 is of course the retired number of Phil Esposito.

Wheeler Steals the Show as Bruins Shutout Wild 3-0

Fernandez stopped all 25 shots he faced vs. his former team.

Minneapolis (AP) -- Playing in Minnesota is special to the two stars of tonight's contest. Manny Fernandez spent 6 seasons as a member of the Wild, while Blake Wheeler was born and bred in Robbinsdale, Minnesota and attended the University of Minnesota. Neither player disappointed in their return to the state. Fernandez stifled an already weak offensive Minnesota team pitching a shutout on 25 shots. Blake Wheeler scored two goals and added an assist giving him 3 goals already on the season for the rookie.

Wheeler's first goal of the night came on a brilliant feed from Kessel who drove to the post, drew Backstrom over, and dished it back to Wheeler in the slot who top shelfed it glove side to put the Bruins on top 1-0. As it turns out that was all they needed, but that wasn't going to stop the Bs offense. Wheeler's second goal of the period came on a one timer feed from Ryder that he buried stick side. Wheeler would add an assist late in the 3rd period setting up Krejci for his first goal of the season.

The Bs are off for 3 days before they travel to Montreal for what is sure to be a spectacle at the Bell Centre.

                          Bruins Make it Three Straight

Tkachuk registered a goal and an assist leading the Bs past the Habs.

Montreal (AP) -- It didn't take look for the veteran Tkachuk to make his presence felt on this Boston team. In just his second game he turned in a 2 point performance setting up linemate Chuck Kobasew with a beautiful one timer pass in the high slot which Kobasew used to beat Price stick side high, followed by a powerful slapper of his own with just 6 seconds left in the 2nd period from the high slot using a screen to beat Price glove side low.

Montreal had no intentions of laying down on their home ice, however, as they unleashed a 16 shot attack on Thomas in the 3rd period after registering just 15 in the first two. Kovalev got the scoring going early in the period just 2:25 in to pull the Habs back within one. However, Thomas was sharp in the 3rd period staving off many shots. A clear late in the 3rd period turned into trouble for the Canadiens on the power play as P.J. Axelsson won the race to the puck and kept it in the zone long enough to setup Chara at the point who blasted home the game winner putting the Bs up 3-1 with under a minute to go. 35 seconds later, with Price's net empty, Christopher Higgins buried a wrister from the top of the left circle to again get the Canadiens back to within 1 at 3-2. However that lasted a total of 5 seconds as the Bruins won the draw and Michael Ryder put the game away with an empty net goal giving the Bruins the 4-2 victory.

The Bs are now 3-0-0 and will travel to Ottawa to face the 0-2-2 Senators. The Canadiens loss dropped them to 0-4 on the season.

Bruins Force OT but Fall Short

Former Bruin Auld made 44 saves and kept Ottawa in the game.

Ottawa (AP) - In a game where Ottawa tried everything possible to give the Bruins the game, it was journeyman goaltender Alexander Auld who came up huge in keeping Ottawa alive. Boston had a total of 9 power plays which aided in their putting up a whopping total of 47 shots on goal. This included an extended 4 on 3 in overtime in which Boston had a barrage of chances turned away.

The Bruins looked like they were going to bury themselves early in the 3rd period as a turnover in their own defensive zone resulted in a goal by Dean McAmmond putting the Sens up 3-1 with 18 minutes to go in the game. The Bruins would not give up, however, as Marc Savard hooked up with Phil Kessel on a beautiful feed to the streaking winger. Kessel broke away from the defense and dangled his way to his 3rd goal of the season with just under 8 minutes to go. Things, however, started to look bleak for the Bruins as they entered the final minute still trailing as they blew another opportunity on the power play.

Zdeno Chara quickly changed that tone as he blasted in his second goal of the season with 49 seconds to go in regulation. Auld got a piece of it with the blocker but the shot was too hot to handle and it deflected over and in from the point. The Bruins had a golden opportunity earlier to tie it on a rebound off a point shot from Stuart to Kobasew. Kobasew was stoned by Auld as he stacked the pads to take away the rebound chance.

However, the Chara goal was the last good news of the night for the Bruins as they blew an extended 4 on 3 as the Sens committed two penalties in the overtime. Then with just 33 seconds to go and finally back to full strength Dany Heatley buried his second goal of the game to give the Senators the overtime victory.

The Bruins will have tomorrow off and then have a back-to-back on Monday with the Penguins for their home opener at the Garden followed by a road game in Buffalo Tuesday night. Thomas is expected to get the call in net vs. the Pens while Manny will handle the duties in Buffalo.
