Re: Taking the Big East By [Red] Storm - CH2k9

          Norm Roberts Press Conference:

"I just want to thank everyone for being here. It truly is a pleasure to be standing in front of you all once again as the head coach of the St. John's basketball team. The Red Storm deserves nothing but the best and that's what I'm here to give you. I think we're all excited to get this season underway and hopefully make a postseason birth."

          When asked about the schedule:

"We have a lot of games outside of the conference very close to home against feisty, although winnable, opponents. Once we reach conference play, we know we're going to be seeing tournament-worthy teams on a nightly basis, so we can't take any nights off. As a young team, that is one of my biggest concerns. Then the cherry on top is a road game to Cameron to take on Duke right in the middle of conference play. That will be a great experience for this team."

          Analyzing the Red Storm's roster:

"Like I said before, we are very young. Anthony Mason, Jr. is our team leader, but he is going to be gone next season. I'm looking for someone to step up this year to complement Anthony so when he's gone next year, we'll know who we can fall back on. Our starting lineup consists of four sophomores and Mason Jr, so next year we will only have to replace one player in the starting five.

But with that, we have players playing out of position. Paris Horne will start at the off guard position, but he's a natural 3. Mason was brought in as a small forward, but with our lack of skill at the post positions, we feel like he can use his big frame and play at the four for us. Justin Burrell goes from power forward to center, but I have a feeling that will be position by committee as we go along."

          Recruiting:

"We have three scholarships available and we plan on using them all. This school resides in Brooklyn, New York... the Mecca of the basketball world. We should be recruiting the great talent right in our backyard and resurrect this program to where it once was. One position of need is at shooting guard, but after that we will just be hunting for the best prospects we can get our hands on."

We are now six days away from the early signing period and the St. John's faithful have their fingers crossed that they can snag their top three prospects now and move on to recruiting some juniors. Norm Roberts will now speak on his top-three targets:

                            Sherman Richards
                            • Position - SG
                            • Height - 6'3"
                            • Weight - 188 lbs.

"Sherman is not only a great player, but he's a great, smart kid. Someone we would love to have and build our program around. He may be a bit undersized, but he's got the court vision and ball handling skills to play the point for us if we needed. He's got a nice mid-range jumper, but we need to work on his three ball."

                            Poncho Nardi
                            • Position - SG
                            • Height - 6'1"
                            • Weight - 173 lbs.

"If we thought Sherman [Richards] was a bit undersized, Nardi must be a midget. He played the off-guard in high school, but he'll have to move to point for us. He's got the skills (averaged 5.8 assists in AAU) and can shoot the rock. Should be a great addition to our team."

                            Devin Christian
                            • Position - C
                            • Height - 7'1"
                            • Weight - 236 lbs.

"Devin will be a work in progress, but he would give us the size we desperately need in the paint. Though he's not the most athletic kid, he can rebound with the best of them with his shear size. We'd like to see him come in and block some shots right away, but we'll have to have him work with our big man coach first."

Red Storm rolls! Two 20 point scorers; Burrell asserting himself as the
leader of the team in terms of scoring and rebounding.
