Slightly Different Approach to QB Vision

*This poll is for people who want some form of QB vision. Note- there IS no cone in this idea. If you're against any sort of QB vision mechanism period, please don't clutter the poll and just move on.

Instead of holding L or R and cycling through your receivers (= time waster), and instead of seeing a huge vision cone, how about this:

Version 1 (closer to vision cone):

  • Use the procedural awareness to ensure that if the QB isn't looking in the general direction of the player, the pass is less accurate.
  • Instead of using the L button + the receiver icon, use the right analog stick (like in games like Halo). Control the QBs lateral and forward/backward motion with the left analog, and adjust his head or body angle with the right analog, thereby directing where he is looking with it.
EDIT- use of the analog for version 1 is not anywhere near as precise as in the old cone. All you have to do is make sure your QB is looking in the general direction. You don't have to "highlight" any icons, etc.
  • Say you want to hit a slant to the left, and have a RB going into the flat as a secondary option. As you drop back, move the right analog slightly left. When you hit the back step and hitch, the QB is looking at the slanting receiver. Say he is covered and you want to more through your progression to your RB in the flat. Just tilt the right analog more to the left (and watch your QB tilt his body/head more to that receiver), and then throw the swing pass.
  • If you never move your vision more to the left, but still throw the ball, maybe you over throw the running back by a little bit (I have seen QBs over throw swing passes enough to know this happens...).
  • Clearly this can also be used to look off linebackers, etc. Start by looking down the middle of the field, and as the Lbs drift inward, hit your WR on the slant.
  • Etc.
Hopefully you see how this would work. Go through your progressions simply by moving the right analog. No, it will NOT be just switching through icons like in the old vision cone (or tecmo bowl). Instead it will be moving your QB's head and body so that he is in a position to throw to whichever receivers are presently in his field of vision.

As to the problem of two receivers being in the field of vision, but one deep and one shallow, since the QB can SEE both of them, there really shouldn't be much of a penalty for choosing one over the other. But if the Qb is positioned so that he is more facing one than the other, his most accurate pass should be to the one he is facing. It wouldn't be an "all or nothing" thing, like the cone. It would be a continuum of "most accurate possible pass" to "least accurate possible pass" based upon the position of the QB and his head.

Obviously you would simply press the button that corresponds to the icon of the receiver you want to throw to to pass. That part will not change from the current passing mechanism or the old vision cone mechanism (push B to throw to the B receiver). Just how accurate you are based upon whether or not the icon you push is a pass a real QB could throw.

Version 2 (I think I like 1 better, but here is one that is even closer to the current passing mechanism):

  • Just use the left analog to move your QB. When you are in "passing mode" the left analog should make your QB hitch in the angle you are pushing the analog. If you move him left, he shouldn't just dart to the left (how many QBs do this?), but instead angle his feet more and maybe drift a bit left so that he is in position to throw left. If you want to scramble in the pocket, just use the normal scrambling button mechanism.
  • There would be a slight accuracy penalty for not throwing the direction he is favoring. Maybe if the QB is favoring left but throws right there could be a "throwing off the back foot" animation to correlate with the accuracy penalty.

In both of these versions there ARE no onscreen graphics or animations other than the direction your QB is facing/looking. (that should be all you need with procedural awareness, shouldn't it?) After all, when watching the game on Sunday there isn't anything to clue you on to which way the QB is looking other than the direction his head/body is pointing, right?

So, what do you think? Which of these two is better? If you were at least given one, would it be an upgrade over the current passing mechanism?

And...

Are either one of these better than BOTH the current passing mechanism AND the old vision cone passing mechanism?

What modifications or additions do you have?

Btw, this is obviously not for Madden 10, since I highly doubt they have the time to code anything like this with so little time.
