Now that I think about it more, this does happen to me just running up. I guess I just hadn't really noticed the animation. It does seem like it's too common to miss a tackle when you are simply running up on the ballcarrier from behind. It seems like it's pretty rare for anyone to miss a tackle in that situation in real life.
