Actually 720p and 1080i are pretty much the same.

A progressive scan picture is actually the closer of the two to a true picture. Progressive scan has one signal line for every line displayed. An interlaced scan has an extra line laced in between every two lines.

It basically acts as a line doubler, and of the 1080 lines 360 of them are basically fake.
