Started a new career with a custom coach, and in the off-season, so no Favre all new post 2007 moves.

Made my coach a "Traditionalist" and implemented the Steelers Power Run offense. I kept the Jets defensive scheme in tact because I felt it would be too difficult to implement a new offense and a new defense.

For the period leading up to the draft I made these moves.

Trades

The Jets also traded backup QB Kellen Clemens to the Tennessee Titans for a the Titans 2008 5th round draft pick (152nd)

The players I didn't re-sign I didn't because I didn't feel they fit the direction I wanted to take the team.

I wasn't real active in free agency but I filled some key needs. Gibril Wilson fills a hole at FS. He's got good range and it physical in run defense.

Dallas Sartz gives us some flexibility and some athleticism at LB and will play SAM and lineup over the TE. I expect him to be in the mix for a starting spot.

Fred Miller, Ben Noll and Justin Smiley are all being counted on to start and help rebuild what was at best a mediocre offensive line.

Kellen Clemens didn't fit the direction we were going as a team and he was dealt to Tennessee for the Titans 2008 5th round draft pick.

With the FA signing period over it was time for the draft.

This team had so many holes, it would be impossible to plug them all via the draft, but I was hoping to build a nice core of players to build on in the future.

In particular I wanted to find a true between the tackles runner to play in my new power run game scheme, I wanted to find a QB of the future, and I wanted to get more athletic on defense in the front 7. If possible I also wanted to get a little more physical at WR and find a TE that could stretch the middle of the field.

I owned all my original draft picks, minus my 3rd round pick and I had an extra 5th round pick thanks to the Clemens trade.

First Round:
The Jets had the #6 pick in the draft. When it came time to make our pick, I didn't feel we were going to get proper value with that pick. So I attempted to trade down. The Cowboys offered me their 2 first round picks (#22 and #28) and I took it.

With the #22 pick, I took Illinois RB Rahard Mendenhall. He's big, athletic and can run between the tackles. He was exactly the player I was looking for.

With the #28 pick, I addressed my QB of the future need by selecting QB Joe Flacco out of Deleware. Flacco is a big strong kid with an absolute cannon for an arm.

2nd Round:
In the second round I again traded down. I traded my 2nd round pick (#36) to Jacksonvile for their 2nd rounder (#58), their 4th rounder (#124) and their 7th round pick in 2009.

With this pick, I was looking to add defense, but Desean Jackson was staring me in the eye. Gives me a legit big play WR and Kick/Punt returner. He was too good to pass up so I selected him.

3rd Round:
We had no picks in this round.

4th Round:
We had 3 picks here.
With our first we took GT LB Phillip Wheeler. We feel he'll compete right away for an inside LB spot, but also feel he's versatile enough to use at OLB if needed.

Next we took Texas A&M DT, Red Bryant. Another guy to give depth at the NT/3-4 DE position. We feel he'll also compete for playing time right away and will provide depth at multiple position along our defensive front

And with our last pick of the 4th round we took, USF CB Trae Williams. We feel he's a steal in the 4th round. Probably should have gone in the 2nd round. We project him to be a solid starter at CB, historically one of the toughest positions to fill

5th Round:
We had two picks in this round.

With our first pick in this round we took WVU FB Owen Schmitt. He fills a need at FB, and is big strong and athletic. Needs help as a lead blocker, but we feel he can develop in to a solid FB for our offensive scheme.

Next we took Kentucky TE, Jacob Tamme. We project to use him more as an Hback, and could be used as a TE, FB and slot player.

6th Round:
With our 6th round pick we took DE Buddy Jackson from Gardner Webb. Small college star who will be a project. Has some physical ability to could develop in to a solid player

7th Round:
With this pick we took Ryan Torain, RB Arizona St. His last year in college I thought he was the best RB in the Pac 10 until he got hurt. Slasher, who's a good downhill runner.

WR Mario Urrutia, Louisville
QB Andre Woodson, Kentucky
LB Geno Hayes, Florida St.
LB David Vobora, Idaho
SS Caleb Campbell, Army

Woodson, Urritia and Hayes all have legit chances to make the team.

Woodson had great pre-draft camps, and we were looking to take him in the draft, before Flacco fell in to our laps. The fact he was available was a surprise so we signed him.

Urrutia is a big physical receiver. This is exactly the type of WR we are looking to have that fits our system. We think in the future he could be a very good complementary WR

Hayes gives us speed and athleticism at the OLB position. Something, despite our scheme we are sorely missing. Could be used early in the Nickel.

Jets RB Leon Washington has been lost for the season. Washington tore his ACL on the third day of training camp and was placed on IR.

There goes my change of pace back. Really glad I hadn't cut Thomas Jones yet...

The Jets send their 2009 7th round pick and their 2010 5th round pick to Chicago for Bears QB Kyle Orton.

I've got some serious concerns as to whether Chad Pennington can play a full season without getting hurt. I was not comfortable going in to the season with two rookies as his backups. So when the Bears contacted me about a deal, I took them up. Orton provides us a solid veteran backup QB.

On a side note, we're operating with about $5.1 million in cap space currently.

Yeah Woodson is a beast; he fell in my dynasty, but going undrafted? This will be interesting to see who turns out to be your QB of the future- Flacco or Woodson.

Well Pre-Season is over. We went 0-4 and was not competetive in any game.

Some things are very clear.

- We are no where near athletic enough in the front 7 on defense.
- Installing a new offense is very difficult.
- Our coaching staff has not done a very good job.

Starting ILB David Harris was placed on Injured Reserve with a torn Triceps muscle.
