I can't help it, personally. Anyone with a background in software is well aware of the negative consequences of patching.
It's why most developers HATE doing it. It's become common place in the industry, as the line between gaming console and PC continues to blur. However, as with any type of software, which is what a video game truly is (some fail to realize that), there is always the possibility of something going awry.
Sad that it happened, but nothing can really be done at this point. I'm sure a lesson was learned, by both the consumer and developer.
