Re: Backbreaker Preview w/ New Trailer (IGN)

I thought the trailer looked pretty good. I'm not a fan of the Blitz-like proportioned player models and would like to see more dynamic running styles - doesn't seem to be a discernible difference in speed/players don't see to open up their strides enough. Too much similarity across the board, really. And it would seem like it'll be hard for them to manufacture some sense of personality w/the players.

But the contact feels more like football than most of what I've seen from Madden 10 thus far, and this is only their first year effort. Movement is very smooth, and the technology behind it all (players recognizing the need to balance themselves intelligently, the contact) is impressive. Would be nice if the hardcore community doesn't work to shoot the game down before it even has a chance to start - especially given how open people are to being patient/understanding/helping Tiburon develop Madden, and that this is Backbreaker's first year (versus Tiburon's 5th next gen iteration) and that they have the huge disadvantageof not having the NFL license. We're not getting much of anything in the way of innovation from Tiburon; it's going to take companies like this taking a chance at developing a football game in order to get something to push football gaming forward.

No franchise mode equal no buy, and no rental for me. As long as it took for this game to get to this point a franchise mode should have been added.. Too bad because I like what I see.

I didn't make it. I just googled it to show that one guy that you can use NFL logos in a game that are user created.

Well said Spank. I find all this hatred toward this game surprising myself. Here is a game that actually is striving toward providing a next-gen type of experience, and all people are doing are complaining about it not have a license. As if they (BB Devs) can really help the fact that EA has exclusive rights to the NFL.

                    Good post.

My concern with this game is that it was developed around the idea of showcasing a technology. Maybe they had to do that. Maybe NM approached 2K/EA but got denied. The concern though lies in how much they have to focus on representing the game of football and what philosophy they take in that. If their philosophy is what they are saying, "somewhere in between" simulation and arcade, I think that leaves much to be desired. I found it interesting that they had to confirm 11 vs 11 in this trailer. Ok, that's down, but what about specifics like audibles, subs, defensive assignments etc.?

In the end I think we're going to be left with a prodcut that makes many wish either of two things: 1) That the technology was used in Madden and 2) That the game was more of a simulation of the sport.
Being kind, one to another, never disappoints.

I'm definitely buying this game. I love playing blitz just because you can do the crazy things that are not allowed in the NFL. I'm buying this game off of the technology alone. Those are without a doubt the most violent/realistic hits I've ever seen in a football game and, thats about all it has going for it from what I've seen and thats all I need. Plus 11v11 online with really good graphics. I gotta give this game a try.

If the saying is true that every tackle is different then I will be on this game alot. Maybe not as much as madden but just depends on how fun BB will be.

I'm ready to lay someone out.

I agree. But we don't know if it'll have a franchise mode or not do we? Didn't they say the devs were keeping the game modes under wraps?

I agree with your other points except for BB having a disadvantage.

I actually think that in this post-NFL/EA era, not having to shell out millions of licensing dollars to the NFLPA actually helps developers such as 2K and the folks who make BB. If not just the financial aspect, it allows them to break out of that shell with fresh ideas to try something different without the confines of the NFLPA and competing directly against Madden. You don't have to fight Madden if you don't have the license, right? It would be a no win situation. Just go after a different market. I definitely believe it's there for the taking.

We've had countless years of the same camera angles, playcalling screens, and gameplay issues.

What I see from this trailer is another fresh approach (APF being the other). It's still very raw though. For me, it's like watching Dwight Howard in the playoffs. It's showing a very good foundation for football, but there are some changes here and there that would make this a real powerhouse.

I'd like to think that this game is creating its own market of football fans and anything added to that couldn't hurt.
