    Any tips on stealing bases?

Does anyone have any tips on how to be fairly successful stealing bases? I have just recently started a franchise with the Red Sox after playing RTTS.

So far with Ellsbury I have only been able to steal 2 bases in about 10 chances. The two times I was successful it was on bad throws by the catcher. I don't maybe I am doing something wrong but I would think Ellsbury should be able to steal at a good rate.

I am using the new baserunning controls and extend the runners lead by using L1 and then hit L2 for them to steal. I was wondering if I should use the steal early control to get a better jump than using L2?!?!

    Any help would be appreaciated!

i think this is a good topic. i dont have extremely good success but i feel its around 50/50 at a minimum.

first i make sure my runner has the speed to steal ;D. i lead off before the runner window pops up, seems like i get less pick off attempts this way, though i could be wrong. now i just wait on the count till im pretty sure the next pitch will be a breaking pitch. then i run.

whenever i have tried using steal early, i always time it badly and run too early.

Pitcher deliveries have a big impact on basestealing. Other than that its really all about the count. I like to run 0-1 and 1-1. I think my best pct is Escobar and he's 7/10 or somewhere around that.

I guess I need to try and pick better spots when I try to run. I will give it a few more games and change up my strategy a little and see what happens.

There are TWO keys for stealing bases successfully....well, i guess three, if you count the speed of the hitter. I have been successful on about 90% of my attempts in this game. Here is how I do it.

          1. PICK YOUR SPOTS.....If your runner on first is a base stealer, pick your spot wisely. DON'T run in counts where the opposing team may pitch out. Don't, however, run in counts where you know the pitcher needs to throw a strike. I like to run on 1-1 or 2-1 counts, because the pitcher usually won't pitch out, but they don't necessarily HAVE to throw a strike.

          2. IT'S ALL ABOUT THE JUMP!!!!.......This is the big one. When you steal, watch the jump your runner gets.....If its a delayed jump, do one of two things. Either make the runner go back to first IMMEDIATELY after you notice its a bad jump, or, swing at the pitch and treat it as a hit and run. If your baserunner gets a BAD jump, he will be thrown out EVERY time. Stealing bases is all about getting a great jump.

Is there any trick to getting a good vs. bad jump? (using L2)

            Sometimes it seems delayed.

It's not random persay, it has to do with the baserunner's baserunning ability. Those with better ability will get better jumps more often. It does seem random, but it really isnt. At least I havent figured out how to consistantly get a great jump.

What to do to make a good jump? It depends of us or runner abiliy?

For the RTTS mode, simply go into practice. After about 40 attempts (or 2 "games") I was pretty good. Otherwise, you have to push "L2" right when the pitcher starts his windup. I find it best to try to pick a count when you believe the pitcher won't try to throw a fastball.

you can also press L2 well before the pitch is thrown and the runner will still go regardless, im pretty sure its based on the runners stats how fast of a jump he gets.

truthfully i think ideally the best way is to use the early steal but be able to time it. i havent been able to do so, but ill keep trying till i can do it a few times.

Yes, you can push the trigger beforehand but again you won't get a jump either - at least from my experience. Some of it is the runner's baserunning attributes while a majority is simply the user's timing IMO.

                        Here is another tip:

Don't run on the first pitch! If they pitchout, you are screwed.

Here's a tip: Wait for next year's game to when they hopefully fix this horrendous basestealing system. Even when you get a good jump, with an elite basestealer, on a breaking pitch down, your runner will still slow down for some reason, because he wants to get thrown out apparently.

How often you get picked off and thrown out is so unrealistic that it's just downright stupid at times.

i dont really have that problem, when i am thrown out though it is very close and mostly do to how the runner slides, seems like instead of stretching to touch the base they just kinda go through the motions, i dunno how else to explain it.

i do have better luck when sliding in head first though.

Thanks to everyone for the input and suggestions. I guess I am going to have to practice up using the early steal option to get better results!?!?!
