EA's initial response to 2K's $19.99 across the board pricing strategy was a buy 2, get 1 free offer. This went into effect on Sept. 27 and lasted until Nov.14, 2004.

In Nov 04 EA announced a price drop on Madden:

Prior to the price drop, EA had sold more copies of Madden 05 in 12 weeks than NFL 2k5 did in 5 years. This despite having a price point that was more than double 2k5's.
In short, 2k5 did not effect Madden 05 sales in the least. Given this fact, what possible reason did EA have to think their bread and butter franchise was in trouble?

If EA was not threatened by 2k, then why did they even drop their price for Madden at all?
Come on dude, its pretty obvious. They saw the writing on the wall.
and you forgot to mention how they promptly raised the price back up the next year when 2k was out of the way.
