    Mountaineers Announce Jump to FBS

BOONE, NC -- The Appalachian State Mountaineers will begin their first season of competition in the NCAA Division I Bowl Subdivision (FBS) in 2009. After becoming the first school to win 3 consecutive FCS (formerly I-AA) championships from 2005-07, Appalachian State will prepare for bigger challenges and more fierce competition beginning in the 2009 season.

Upon hearing the news, long-time head coach Jerry Moore has decided to step down and hand his job over to travis a.d.

Moore coached 20 seasons at Appalachian State, leading the team to 14 FCS tournament appearances and, of course, the 3 straight national titles. Oh and let's not forget a pretty substantial upset of a BCS powerhouse in 2007 (Sorry, Michigan fans). He passes the torch on to travis a.d., whos Mountaineers will start with a clean slate this season.

Appalachian State will replace the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers in the Sun Belt conference starting in 2009. Western Kentucky has been placed back in the FCS.

Haven't gotten NCAA 10 yet - you are able to take FCS schools into FBS? I thought they were taking that out. I'm excited it's still there. Can't wait to see how you do.

That was understandably sort of mandatory.

Best of luck; it looks that for ASU (as AC/DC frontman Bon Scott would put it, anyway), it's a long way to the top.

                    WEEK 1
Appalachian State 10, East Carolina 26

The Pirates burned App. State's defense for 362 yards in the season opener

                    PLAYERS OF THE GAME
                    Appalachian - D.J. Smith, 4 tackles
East Carolina - Nick Johnson, 12 tackles

                    Coach travis a.d.'s Reaction -
"The Pirates couldn't run the ball to save their lives, probably because I was playing on default sliders. Saw quite a few glimpses of Robo-QB tonight, but that could be largely blamed on our inexperienced, D-rated defense. We were never really in this game, but hey, there are still 11 more games this year. It's a long road to the top for a new FBS team and we still have a long ways to go".

                      WEEK 2
South Florida 21, Appalachian State 31

No Bull - Mountaineers Get First Win
Edwards leads Appalachian State in shocking upset over South Florida

This late-game INT sealed the deal for the Mountaineers

Armanti Edwards was unstoppable on the ground and through the air against USF

                      PLAYERS OF THE GAME
                      South Florida - C. Sinclair, 9 tackles
                      Appalachian - Armanti Edwards, 15-31, 171 yards, 10 carries, 70 yards, 3 total TD

                      Coach travis a.d.'s Reaction -

"I'm not going to lie, I wasn't expecting us to even come close to winning a game until we play Duke in week 4. Everything just seemed to come together so perfectly today. We could still afford to cut down on interceptions though. 3 is just too many for one game. I know we can't afford to turn the ball over against Wake Forest next week. But we'll take it".

                        Bitten By Turnover Bug Again
Things fall apart in 2nd quarter, Mountaineers can't bounce back

Armanti Edwards was sacked 5 times and picked off 4 times

                        PLAYERS OF THE GAME

Wake Forest - Alex Frye, 7 tackles
Appalachian - Blake Elder, 5 receptions, 92 yards, TD

                        Coach travis a.d.'s Reaction

"6 freakin' turnovers. These kids are going to be running stadium steps every day of their lives if we keep putting up those kind of numbers. So much for retro uniforms day. We might never wear those uniforms again if this is how we are going to play. Oh well, at least we have Duke next week".

Best not sleep on the Dookies. They are (very slowly) getting better.

Plus the ratings of the players on your defense are, unfortunately, absolutely dire.

                              WEEK 4
                              Appalachian State 55, Duke 7

                              Raining On Duke's Parade

Devon Moore leaps for the pylon. He rushed for 45 yards on the day

Matt Cline returned Appalachian's first kickoff for TD of the year

DURHAM, NC -- Just another day for the lowly Blue Devils. The weather was horrible, rainy and sopping wet, but the Appalachian State Mountaineers marched into Wallace Wade Stadium and made mincemeat of Duke.

The ACC bottomfeeders managed to put up only 190 yards of total offense, and it would have been a shutout if not for a 6-yard TD pass late in the 3rd quarter.

Armanti Edwards was decent, not great, but decent with 149 passing yards, 102 rushing yards and a passing TD.

Special teams and defense, however, were the heroes of the day. Matt Cline returned the opening kickoff of the 2nd half 79 yards for a TD, the first kickoff return score of the year for the Mountaineers. Cortez Gilbert also brought an interception back to the house in the 1st quarter.

"This was a great test for us before beginning conference play in two weeks. To come out of our first 4 non-conference games with a 2-2 record was completely unexpected and shoul give our boys the boost they need when the games start to matter most", coach travis a.d. said after Saturday's blowout.

Appalachian State has a week off to prepare for October 10's Sun Belt conference opener against Florida International.

                              PLAYERS OF THE GAME
Appalachian - Matt Cline, 108 kick return yards, TD
Duke - Zach Greene, 3 receptions, 60 yards, TD
