The name was to be determined by a poll of the campus, and the students selected the name "Roadrunners". The school colors were selected as orange, blue, and red. With no plans or money to build a new stadium, the Cotton Bowl was selected as the site for Roadrunner play. Due to the North Texas Mean Green's erratic play as of late, the Mean Green would be replaced by the Roadrunners in the Sun Belt Conference. With all important details set, the remaining needs were head coach and an entire roster. Athletic director Blake Richardson selected former Longhorn, Pro Bowl cornerback, NFL defensive coordinator, and current Washington Redskins defensive backs coach Jerry Gray as the head coach. Gray brought player-coach relation to the team and relatively good experience.
Gray and Richardson quickly put together a roster, though it was not a good one. The first season would be terrible, at best. But it was time to start the first pre-season. Redshirting and scheduling would most likely haunt the team, but Gray went into the pre-season with a positive mindset, and the campus hoped for the best as the team looked forward to begin the first season of Roadrunner football.
