I'll take a stab at it, the last gen engine either can't handle better levels of lighting without the framerate dropping or they use the muddy lighting/washed out look to hide issues.

I'm still 100% convinced not starting over from scratch or at least working on an entirely new core engine in tandum to their first attempts on the 360 and continuing to work off of what is esentially still a last gen port with layers of spit and polish was a mistake.

The Skating is new from last year. Play 2k8 and play 2k9 that is new. The colors are what are missing. They are not as dark. Almost like some HDTV's how they can't show real black levels good. This game fall under that too.

Interesting. I didn't realize this game was a last-gen port. That could explain the issues they're having with the funky AI logic. Their MLB series has some of the same issues, including a reduction in graphic quality from two years ago in order to prevent framerate issues.

Yeah 2K basically ported their sports games to get the jump on EA.

Call me batty but I don't see any difference between the comparison photos and the screenshot. Nothing looks severely washed out IMO.

As for the player models, they look very similar to 2K9's graphics in this shot but with a lot more detail and proportion. Faces aren't all that different either but who knows what everything will look like up close. I seriously hope more screens and a fact sheet are on the way tonight...

Sadly it has been. The entire time. I had high hopes that with VC taking over both MLB and NHL that it would finally change, that we'd finally get the level of detail and polish that NBA2k gets. I was willing to give them somewhat of a pass on the visuals of 2k9 figuring they were somewhat rushed. Thinking maybe that they didn't put much effort into 2k9 that their attention was instead being focused on a new engine to finally narrow the gap between their other sports titles aside from the NBA sku and the rest of EA's line.

Again while I do think the models definately look a bit better, the're still imo not even close to what EA's are texture and detail wise. Obviously gameplay is king and the jury is still out on how 2k10 plays but in the same sense with how much of a disappointment 2k9 was for me I'm certainly not going to hold my breath.

That 2k is taking this downright insane way to market the game this year with single screen shots and vague information doesn't help much either.

Actually, Bobby Orr scored a goal in the same way. And just last year, Danny Heatly scored a goal like it as well. Let's not act like it can't be done, people.

Not taking away anything from Ovi, that goal was spectacular! But it could be done by others in the NHL. The problem, as many stated, would be if this type of animation would happen every game. If it's a one in every 15-20 games, that's cool. And as long as their's different kind of possible variations (left rotation, right rotation, on butt, forhand, backhand, etc).
Where is the horse and the rider?
Where is the horn that was blowing?
They have passed like rain on the mountain. Like wind in the meadow.
The days have gone down in the West... behind the Hills... into Shadow.

How did it come to this?

Yeah because I'd love to see the AI score unbelievable goals that generally happen once a year if that every 15 to 20 games. Knowing 2k I'd hazard it'll prolly happen more than that quite honestly.

Yeah...some sort of dial-a-deke or something.
