“Yankees easily pick up win with a crushing first inning!!!!!”

Randy Johnson and Sidney Ponson would get the start in the second game of the series at Camden Yards. The Yankees scored 4 runs in the first off of two homers from A-Rod and Hideki Matsui. The only run scored for the Orioles was in the 3rd inning off a single by David Newhan scoring B.J. Surhoff. The Yankees would get 5 home runs total in the game. The Orioles only had one extra base hit, a Chris Gomez double in the 5th. Randy Johnson pitched a complete game and had an excelent outing to propel the Yankees out of last place.

"Yankees get no hit through 5 and still complete the sweep"
Defense played a huge role in this low scoring game at Camden Yards. Many dives and outstanding plays were made that may have saved the Yankees and gave them the win. In the first inning the Orioles got runners on first and third and nobody out. Melvin Mora struck out. Next, Chris Gomez flied out to shortstop and to end the inning Rafael Palmeiro flied out to second. The only runs were scored in the 7th off of two run scoring singles by the Yankees. In the ninth inning with one man out. Javi Lopez hit one deep to right. The ball would have bounced off the wall and scored David Newhan if it weren't for the Yankees right fielder who climbed up on the wall and caught the ball for the out. The last out was made when Luis Matos flied out deep to right.

The first game of a quick two game series against the Tigers went to the Orioles. The Orioles took the lead early with a run scoring single in the 4th. The Tigers were shut down by ace Daniel Cabrera with seven strikouts going 6 innings. Rick Bauer was called for relief in the 7th and in the 8th the Tigers tied the game off a solo shot from catcher Ivan Rodriguez. In the same inning the Orioles got two runs off of a double from David Newhan. In the 8th inning when a double play was turned Carlos Guillen took out Chris Gomez with a slide and fractured his wrist. The report said he will be out for 40 or more days. In the bottom of the 8th Jerry Hairston Jr. grounded out to shortstop. As he touched the base he twisted his ankle and will be out for about a week. The Orioles and the Tigers finish off the quick series tomorrow night.

"Back-to-Back Home Runs in the 9th aren't enough to give Tigers the victory!!!"
Offense was in an abundance today as both teams combined for 13 runs. The run scoring started right away with a run scoring single by Craig Monroe in the top of the first. The Orioles came back in the 3rd with RBI single and a 2 RBI single. Then the Orioles bats came alive. They scored one run in 4th and 2 runs in the 5th. On the last play off the bottom of the 5th all the fans at Camden Yards were silent. There laying on the the dirt next to second base layed Chris Gomez unconscious. He was kicked in the head while trying to take out the shortstop with a slide. Thankfully, the smelling salt brought him to and we was taken off the field. The doctor diagnosed him with a concussion and will be out for 47 or more days. In the bottom of the 7th Melvin Mora hit a three run homer to give the Orioles a 9-1 lead. The Tigers were not going to give up. The lead off man got on first and started the Tigers attempt at a combeack. The next man flied out bringing up Carlos Pena. He hit a two nrun home run over the right center field wall. Vance Wilson then stepped in. With an 0-1 count he hit one over the right center field wall. The Orioles lead was shrunken to 5 runs. Luckilly, the next 2 outs were made and the Orioles got the sweep.

"Knuckleballer Tim Wakefield shows to be too much for the O's."
Bruce Chen came into this start with a 0.00 ERA. WOW!. Too bad the Red Sox would not let that continue in his third start. With two outs in the top of the first Manny Ramirez smacked one over the right field wall. The Red Sox kept pounding on Chen with a 3 run home run in the second off the bat of Mark Bellhorn. Chen was taken out in the beginning of the 4th only throwing 3 innings. The Red Sox went on to add a run in the 7th, 8th, and 9th. In the 9th the Orioles had a runner on first and third with two outs but Javi Lopez flied out to end the game. Wakefield pitched a complete game shutout allowing only 5 hits.

                Curt Schilling (1-2)
                Sidney Ponson (0-2)

"Boston able to pick up quick sweep on the road!!!!!!"
Sidney Ponson came into this game without a win a needed a win to show his team that he is good enough to be a starting pitcher. He had high hopes when the Orioles scored the first run of the game off a sacrifice fly in the 4th giving the Orioles the first lead of the game. Unfortunately that would be their only lead. In the top of the 5th Mark Bellhorn hit a solo homer to tie the game. The Red Sox kept piling on then with a run in the 7th and 8th and 3 runs in the 9th. The Orioles had a runner on third with two outs in the 9th but the game ended on a groundout. After this game it is likely Sidney Ponson will become a reliever and someone will fill his spot. Reports say it will be John Parrish or newly promoted John Maine.

                  Game 17 of 162

                  (8-8)@(4-13)

                  Starting Pitchers

                  Rodrigo Lopez (0-3)

                  Miguel Batista (0-2)

"O's 6 run first us too much for last place Blue Jays"

Rodrigo Lopez came into this game without a win and like his teamate Sidney Ponson is play to stay a starter. Lopez had high hopes as the Orioles scored a whopping 6 runs in the first! All runs off of RBI singles or doubles. The Jays tried to come back with a run in the bottom of the 1st. The Orioles scored one run in the third and the fourth. An 8-1 lead almost ensured a victory to the o's but the Jays would make it very close. Two runs in the 7th and 3 runs in the 8th made the orioles 7 run lead shrink to only 2! Luckilly, a Javi Lopez 3 run homer gave the o's a secure 5 run lead and a win.

"Orioles score 4 runs late to pick up the victory"

The Orioles came into this game 4 games back from first place and needed a win against the last place Jays. The Orioles got a run in the first of an RBI single from Melvin Mora. In the bottom of the third the Orioles experienced their third injury of the season.Jay Gibbons was running after a foul ball an he tore his knee ACL causing him to be out for 96 days! Later in the inning Alex Rios doubled in a run to tie it. In the bottom of the 5th Greg Myers hit a homer of the right-center field wall to give the Jays their first lead of the series. The Orioles tied it up once again in the 6th with a RBI single by Miguel Tejada. With a runner on first and second with one out Tejada grounded a ball to the shortstop that should've been an easy inning ending double play but instead the ball went wide of the second baseman and a lead taking run scored. They scored 3 more runs that inning and the Orioles went on to win 6-2.

"O's complete sweep over last place Jays!"
The Orioles needed to complete the sweep of the Jays to stay in second place. Sidney Ponson made his start after his last one was skipped because of his poor performannce. In the top of the 4th David Segui hit a sac fly to drive in Rafael Palmeiro giving Ponson some breathing room. The very next inning the Orioles added two more runs off a 2 RBI double. The only run scored for the Jays was a sole home run by Orlando Hudson in the top of the 7th. B.J. Ryan pitched a 1-2-3 ninth and got his 5th save of the year. The have a 3 game series at Fenway next that will make a big difference in the standings.

                            (11-8)@(15-4)

                            Starting Pitchers

                            Tim Wakefield (1-1)

"Both teams need extras to score a run!!!"
Last time the Orioles had to face knuckleballer Tim Wakefield they were shutout seven to nothing. Wakefield's slow pitching always seems to catch the Orioles off guard. No one scored until the elventh inning leaving the game very uneventful. With two outs in the bottom of the 11th and John Maine pitching Trot Nixon hit a ball at third baseman Melvin Mora that got past Mora for an error. That error decided the game as the next batter Jason Varitek hit one over the green monster to end the game. In an interview Melvin Mora responded " Everyone will make errors and today was my day I know I let the team and I will try to make it up to them."
