Passing Game Progressions
Hey guys i'm just wondering how does everyone go through their progressions during a passing play? Do you read them from left to right or from right to left? Does it depend if your qb is left or right handed? Thanks for any help.Tags: None -
Re: Passing Game Progressions
My checks are
look for blitz,
check safeties/deep route,
check crossing,
then flat.
There is usually only time for 3 options, no matter how many routes are out, so it's more long, med, short, than left to right. -
Re: Passing Game Progressions
Cool I'll try that. For some reason seems like I've been having more success when reading right to left… I'll keep testing it out.Comment

Re: Passing Game Progressions
I too first look to see who the middle LB will be on the play then I see where the safeties are at. Then of course I usually am looking for my #1 WR and should work my way around based off of that, but I love my TE so, I look for him second usually.
I try to take what the defense is giving me, so I guess to answer your question.... is I'm all over the place when it comes to how I go through my progressions. It changes on each play based on the defense.NCAA Football: Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Re: Passing Game Progressions
That's sounds logical, take what the defense gives you! Thanks! It's good to have a strategic discussion about the game and not hear people bitch about how bad it is. Anyone else have any input on the topic?Comment

Re: Passing Game Progressions
Also what's the best hot route to call when u see a blitz coming. Iv been successful with slants in yrs past but this yr seems like the DBs jam the hell outta my WRs and they can't get open.Comment

Re: Passing Game Progressions
Depends on the play called. You have to understand the concept of the pattern. Is it stretching the defense from side to side (horizontally) or is it stretching the defense from short to deep (Vertically).
Examples:
1. Horizontal- all curls try to stretch the defense across the field, 5 on 4. You can make this 3 on 2 or 2 on 1 by reading the rotation of the secondary; strong rotation-work weak and vice versa
2. Vertical-smash stretches the corner by putting a receiver short of him and behind him, throw the route that the corner doesn't cover
some stretches work best vs 2 deep coverages, some vs 3 deep so always try to have a checkdownComment

Re: Passing Game Progressions
You can also have your tight end run into the flat. A lot of times linebackers will blitz, you can hit the tight end, and sometimes your flanker will even throw a good block on his corner to get you the first down.NFL: Indianapolis Colts (12-6)

Re: Passing Game Progressions
This will probably echo what many others have said, but I do the following:
1 -- Pre-snap read. Look at CB and LB depth and safety position. Look at DE width.
2 -- Hot routes, including blocking assignments for backs and TEs. I end up going max protect quite a bit in blitz situations. Also, O-Line adjustments, particularly if it's a roll-out.
3 -- Snap read. Watch safeties initially, then pass rush. Deep route will either present itself or not, crossing routes will either be open or not, and I'll be able to see if my "hot" receiver (usually TE or RB) is going to be open. The read usually goes deep to short, and it all happens extremely quick.Quit making your stupid YouTube videos and start playing the game.Comment

Re: Passing Game Progressions
this is what i have the most success with. especially if you have a good TE who can break a tackle when he needs to.Comment

Re: Passing Game Progressions
It's been mentioned a couple times, use that TE! If you think the LBs are coming hot route him to a streak and hit him as soon as he's in the open behind the blitzers. A TE drag is good in this situation and a curl would essentially work too. Only thing I don't like about a curl is that sometimes the AI doesn't turn your TE around fast enough and he won't make a play on the ball or it hits him in the back
RBs to the flats are another good option.

Re: Passing Game Progressions
1. Identify coverage (learn to read Man, Cover 2, and Cover 3 from scrimage).
2. If Cover 2: 1-deep wr. 2-Back on a fly 3- TE on slant
If Man: 1-Deep slant 2-RB on slant
If Cover 3: 1- slot wr on post 2-RB/TE in flat
Presnap I also look for any tell tale blitz signs. If I know a certain player is blitzing, i hot route to where he is supposed to be.Comment
