"The Crib" and everything that went with it (celebrity VIP's playing cheeseball with you included). Canned video highlights that didn't actually happen in a simmed game (used in CH2k games as well)

I still love 2k5 (and APF, for that matter), but let's not pretend that it was gimmick-free.

When you drop MILLIONS of $$$ to lock up the NFL license, players, ESPN, NFL Network.. Sales are going to be a big issue.
CEO just better be happy they have the whole sport on LOCK.

Re: EA Boss Not Happy With Madden Sales....

I find this increasingly suspicious. EA now admits to having realized sales were slumping. Ironic timing to become active in the community by placing an aggressive, energetic guy to take control of the game in the public eye. Nothing against Ian, that just what happened. Anybody who has taken a marketing class understand whats going on here.

So now we see reports that EA was pleased Madden "appeared to have been doing well on the pre-order front". Of course it had, EA had basically dispatched a group of people to confront the community to prove the game was better. Not only that EA had pre order bonus items in place.

Lets not blame the economy, its proven that entertainment is one of the more stable industries in this country. I think we can all agree that video games are a entertainment form now, not so much a "luxury".

By not living up to standards set, any product will sell poorly. From matches to Madden. Facts are facts, this game still cant live up to what the back of the Madden 2009 Box says. " The most realistic, deep, and authentic football experience next to being on the field yourself".

From the outside EA looks like a very confused group of people. Its becoming apparent they have little or no quality control in place, yet they struggle to understand how poor products get released.
The game released to mixed reviews and its obvious to anybody who has played Madden even casually over the past few years, its plagued by game play issues.

If only EA would tackle Maddens game issues the way Pro Tack does. Everybody gets involved and wraps their arms around it until something unpredictable happens.

I am hoping for decline in sales for a return of all football video games not just 2k. Part of the decline is because this game is stale, boring and I have a "been there, done that" feeling when I play it. I wanna see new developers design something that takes football to a whole new level, not keep me playing the same games for the next decade.

the game is boring this year, no surprise that sales are down. I can hardly get through a game before turning it off. No replay factor whatsoever.

NPD: US game industry slips 16% in August, PS3 sales nearly double

The US game industry began August on a low note, after suffering double-digit declines in March, April, May, June, and July. Unfortunately, it ended the month on the downside as well, with combined sales of non-PC game hardware, software, and accessories dropping 16 percent year-on-year to $908.72 million. That was a slight improvement from July, which saw a dramatic 29 percent year-on-year drop and $848.9 million in sales.

On the hardware front, sales sunk 25 percent year-on-year to $297.60 million, and were barely up from $280.94 million in July. The ever popular DS was again on top, selling 552,900 units, followed by the $249 Wii with 277,4000 units. In third was the Xbox 360, which saw its 215,400-unit total only rise slightly month-over-month after the Elite model's price dropped to $299.99 on August 28. However, NPD's August reporting period ended August 29, meaning it was only two days' worth of sales.

By contrast, the fourth-place PlayStation 3 got a big bump last month. Though the $299.99 Slim wasn't supposed to go on sale until September 1, many retailers began selling the console during the last week of August. As a result of that and older PS3 models being marked down, the platform's sales nearly doubled from 121,800 units in July to 210,000 in August.

"These PlayStation 3 figures show that the new $299 price point is a definite sweet spot for the console and I expect the momentum gained in August to continue through the holiday season," Electronic Entertainment Design and Research director of analyst services Jesse Divnich told GameSpot this afternoon. "August also marks the first month the PlayStation 3 has shown year-over-year growth in 2009, and we expect similar growth for the remainder of 2009."

However, Sony's other two platforms continued to bring up the rear. Despite Dissida: Final Fantasy cracking the software top 10 (see below), the fifth-place PSP sold only 140,300 units, followed by the PlayStation 2 and its 105,900 haul.

On the software side, Electronic Arts' Madden NFL 10 was the big winner, taking first place (360 - 928,000 units), third place (PS3 - 665,000 units), and sixth place (PS2 - 160,000). However, those figures were down overall from August 2008, when Madden NFL 09 sold 1 million units on the 360, 643,000 units on the PS3, and 424,500 units on the PS2. The Wii version of Madden, which sold 115,800 units last year, didn't even make the August 2009 top 10, selling just 67,000 units. However, according to NPD, the game sold 1.9 million copies across all platforms--hardly a bust.

Besides 10th place game Fossil Fighters (DS, 92,000 units), Nintendo took second place with the still-strong Wii Sports Resort, (754,000 units), eighth with Wii Fit (128,000 units) and ninth with Mario Kart Wii (120,000 units). The rest of the chart was occupied by another Japanese publisher, Square Enix, and its recently purchased British subsidiary, Eidos Interactive. The Xbox 360 edition of Batman: Arkham Asylum took fourth with 303,000 units, just ahead of the 290,000-unit haul of the PS3 version, which boasts exclusive content. The PSP made a rare appearance in the top 10 with Dissidia: Final Fantasy, which sold 130,000 units.

Fossil Fighter's low bar of 92,000 units didn't bode well for several titles mission from the top 10. Activision was completely shut out of the list, meaning the reboot of the Wolfenstein series underperformed. The game's lack of success was first hinted at last month, when its developer, Madison, Wisconsin-based Raven Software, was hit by layoffs. Also missing in action was the critically drubbed movie tie-in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra.

Today's numbers were slightly larger than predictions given to GameSpot earlier in the week by analysts such as Divnich, who thinks the Madden decline isn't as serious as it might seem. "Madden sales came in-line with expectations, but again, I do not believe this is a negative reflection on the series," he elaborated. "With the PlayStation 3 gaining a tremendous amount of steam and the continued success of the Xbox 360, we are confident that Madden NFL 11 will show a positive increase. Growth over the last 12 months among the core next-generation systems was simply not large enough to sustain growth for the Madden series."

He continued, "Batman: Arkham Asylum met our expectations and the PlayStation 3/Xbox 360 SKU ratio was in-line showing that exclusive content can drive a significant amount of sales for the platform receiving the exclusive content. I would not be surprised if we begin to see Microsoft and Sony approaching publishers on delivering future exclusive content to their platform. It would certainly be cheaper and just as effective than paying for pure exclusivity."

Looking at the current month, Divnich believes that the shrinking rhythm game market--down 46 percent year-to-date--will see a turnaround, thanks to a certain foursome. "I am more than confident that September sales will post a positive comparison. Guitar Hero 5 sales are in-line with expectations and Beatles sales are on track to significantly exceed my previous estimates."

You can look to how EA screwed Madden with the console transitions for a lot of the drop in sales since 2005 though. They bailed on the ps2 like everyone else, while taking years to get a 360/ps3 game up to the same standards. That's going to hit sales coming from the peak ps2 years. They have also utterly failed with Madden on the Wii, which is bad considering how big the console is. The Wii version of Madden 10 is easily being outsold by the psp version.

The economy isn't the whole problem, but it adds to their pain.

That's not really true though. Many games get overlooked because of giants on the horizon, especially around the holidays where the top tier games dominate sales over everything else.

If Ea would make a half decent football title then I probably wouldnt care too much one way or another. They have had over 5 years of zero competition and we still cant get a football game that doesnt ship without dozen of huge issues each and every year. Its a sad state of affairs when people are posting about what might be in Patches 1 and 2 before the game even ships.

Whats the harm in another company making a football title? Even when the 2k series was in the mix, it didnt take away from any sales of Madden.

With other companies making football games, at the end of the day EVERYONE wins.

What is this based on "anything entertainment wise...duh".

To reiterate what I said, entertainment has proven to be pretty much recession proof. Simply put, people dont want to dwell on bad times and look for a simple escape.

Redbox for example has grown at an unreal rate from 2003-present, bear in mind many people still attribute 9/11 to the original start of our economic down turn.

Netflix has shown just as large of a growth.

In the past 5 years 7 of the 15 highest grossing movies of all time have came out, all grossing more than $370,000,000.

Lets not even start on the porn industry so we can keep this a child friendly topic.

Entertainment isnt hurting in this country, do a little research before telling other people what is going on. Or don't use the word "duh" to show your spewing what you think is common knowledge, when its not even factual.

EA has made quite a bed for itself, its laying in it rather uncomfortably right now. Lets call a spade a spade. The fact they continue to charge for micro transactions should just further tell you they see no issues with the current game and have no desire to fix them.

Sales for sports games typically reflect the last in the series, because people don't like to get burned twice. If anything, this confirms how the Madden 06-09 iterations were killing the franchise.

Madden had a huge following , and when madden released in the past it just sold. Plain and simple. The last gen Madden had much more going for it than any Madden in next gen, so it sold like hot cakes.

Then came the next gen era. They changed engines and the game has been poorly built year after year. This engine is just made for eye candy. They try to code one thing and it creates bugs in another area. Its hilarious. Now more gamers are on a wait and see scenario before buying Madden. can't blame us.

Madden brought this on themselves. How can anyone be surprised, and we all wont be surprised next year when this trend will continue.

I made this prediction to Ian last August that Madden 10 wasn't going to do well. I have the link to prove it, and he even had the balls to call me out on a bet, but when I chased him down to make a bet, he never responded. I wonder why? lol

The only way Madden sales will increase is by simply changing engines. They must get rid of this Boring glitchy flawed engine , and go with Euphoria. They refuse to do this and sales will continue to fall.

THIS GAME IS GLITCHY , FLAWED, AND BORING zzzzzzzzzZZZZZZZ

That is the only reason why sales are down. The economy excuse is just that a excuse that some in here want to use, but I can bet you that CEO isn't

Re: EA Boss Not Happy With Madden Sales....

Ps3 drops it price to $300 and now they are selling like booty at a prison camp. So lets see....people in a bad economy cant afford $60 greatest of all time football game madden 2010 BUT they can buy a $300 system ........UMMMM Nah its not the economy. Looks like a choice to me.

If a CEO is saying he aint happy with the sells then he must have expected better. Sounds like someone aint happy with the return on their investment.

It would appear that name recognition and being the only show in town does not equate to continued sells growth.

Maybe a corner has been turned and this game has not evolved enough to warrant new customers and they are losing base. 5 years of loses is not a eco problem its a product problem.

For all the talk about how much this game has improved from last year to this year, the sum of it is still less than 5 and 2 year old games despite those games shortcomings.

If its too little too late or a bright future on the horizon will be seen in next years sells I suppose.

By the way the live team looks like they got there stuff together. I think they were a bit more proactive though, they snagged a piece of the competitions team and crossed him over.
