In terms of the gameplay, I agree with both sides. I remember in the impressions thread for the demo, I was underwhelmed by the "new Madden" but saw hope for improved gameplay. The time-warp tackles, superman interceptions, swat AND tackle animations, poor line play, ect. is sadly all still there. There was an article on OS yesterday about how APF2k8 was still better despite M10's strides, and I agreed with almost all of it. Even watching the game last night made me remember how much more lifelike the APF animations and Qb play were.

That said, M10 is a far cry from broken, and APF was a far cry from perfect. Instead of all the issues I mentioned above, we had herculean half backs, clueless corners, and ridiculous returns. On balance, I still prefer APF, but that doesn't really matter for one simple reason: M10 is fun. I like the league, I like the players, and I like the games. There's a lot of great things about M10 to enjoy. I won't go through the whole list, but great online franchise mode and solid DB play rank high. You can ruin this game for yourself by focusing on the negatives, just like you could ruin APF. I'm not saying ignore them, I'm saying avoid them. here are my tips to the frustrated M10 player:

    1. Don't play randoms online
    2. Don't try to hit a wr by throwing directly over a LB, or at 45 angle to a DB (ie out routes) unless you have an accurate QB.
    3. Don't run stretch or toss plays without a very fast RB.
    4. Only call Cover 2/3 when you would normally have called cover 4, and only call Cover 4 when you would normally have called Prevent.
    5. If you are relying on pressuring the QB, bring only big blitzes.
    6. Run whenever possible, every throw brings with it the fear of an INT.
    7. Just think of it as a house rule: any INT will be a pick 6, and throw yourself a party if you get a tackle.
    8. EDIT: IMPORTANT ONE--> Never, ever throw to a manually guarded receiver, unless you're willing to give up 6 points. (that one is for you Weeman ).
    Great stuff Team

I could write a whole blog on just your tips to frustrated M10 gamers! In fact I think I will..lol

This is the tact I have started to take as well, and it is the the thing that is keeping my sanity intact. It took me a while to do this with APF as well. heck, it takes me a while to do this with ALL sports games.

Ive been spending a lot of time in practice mode, drilling into my head "Learn to play the game, the way the game will allow to play it, rather then trying to force it to play the way you think it SHOULD play".

It's been difficult. This is the 1st time ive played an EA football game in great depth in about 3 years.

I'll tell you one thing that is giving me fits. I simply cannot settle into who to control manually, for a consistant stretch of time. I have a pretty good system now, but find myself still gravitating towards a lot of manual DL play, because I get so disgusted with them.

My motto for sports games has always been, manually control the aspect of the game, you trust the least." I should probably just stick to that, and stop screwing around lol.

Turnovers determine the outcome of games so frequently in Madden because of how much easier they are to generate than in All Pro Football.

That's why I've tried to build my team around the offensive line and call a conservative, run-first offense with low-risk pass plays that don't give the DBs much of a chance to get a pick.

If you try to force the ball downfield or force it into coverage, you will get picked off a lot in Madden, and thanks to the horrible offensive pursuit, most of those INTs will go back for TDs.

I do the same thing on defense, playing a bend-don't-break style that gives up the short gains but is in good position to get some INTs when guys get impatient and try to force the deep ball.

Madden definitely rewards conservative playcalling much more than All Pro Football.

I think much of the frustration comes from the fact that there is a serious learning curve in the transition from APF to Madden. I knew it would take a half a season or more for me to start to get comfy with the new game, controls, etc.

In addition to Bayern's points, I am really realizing that personnel is hugely important in this game. There are only a handful of QBs in the game that can make all the throws and make them well. They're franchise caliber guys. If you don't have one of those, you're going to have issues and you will have to tailor your offense around the lack of accuracy, arm strength, or consistency. That's as it should be, but I think because you could do whatever you wanted in Madden for so long it's a bit of a shock now that you can't.

So I think some of the "this route is broke, that route is broke" stuff is off for that reason. I just threw hitches and deep outs successfully against a good defense, and I threw both "on time." I'm starting to user catch, and that helps a ton on the offensive side of the ball.

I just played a few games with the new rosters, and the pursuit is definitely fixed. The pick-6 fest is now a thing of the past as of the latest roster update.

No, and I'm not sure if patches will take effect in our league or if they only affect new franchises.

It would make a big difference to have the pursuit on INTs fixed in the league environment, though, since the rampant pick-6's totally change the nature of the game.

I'm with you. I WANT to control James Harrison the whole game, but giving up dinky throws over the middle just drives me nuts and nullifies my pass rush threat since the throws are so quick.

If I control the middle of the field the QB can sit comfy in the pocket all too often and really challenge my safeties. I'd like to control the same player at first as to not tip my hand on defense. It is easy to read people that always control the middle field zone guy or the blitzer. I don't want to be that predictable.

Maybe I have to stick with who I am controlling and really improve my playcalling to stop the middle stuff. My rule of thumb so far is take away my opponents favorite thing to do, be it run, throw to the flats, short middle, scramble... whatever it is... take it away myself. If I face a well rounded opponent, I'll try to always control a single player and go that route.

I just can't let myself play OLB on 3rd and 1 when I KNOW the ball is coming up the middle, or when I KNOW on 3rd and 6 he's going to quick throw it to his TE in the seam, or RB in the flats. I have to take it away myself...

My take on the game itself: Just fine! We can agree no football game is perfect, and I can stomach the shortcomings of this one just like I did APF. I don't even find things to complain about in terms of the game itself. I get more mad at my own playcalling and stick skills... or lack thereof.

I know!!! This is another big issue with the current state of the gaming industry. The patch later mind set is making us the gamers suffer.

Basically if the patches don't take affect. We would have to wait till patch #2, month or 2 away and THEN start our ONLINE franchise. Basically in short. We are buying a Beta copy that gets completely patched and fixed by the beta testers (The day 1 buyers).

I hope the patches take affect on preexisiting online franchises. But we all know that Roster changes don't get included so in that regard we are just screwed. The pick 6 offense pursuit angle fix we will not see in this online franchise.

Before internet gaming blew up we had to take the game as it was and hope for improvements the next year. This is why I never get too hard on developers for patching stuff up after a game releases. I'd rather that than nothing at all.

I just lost to your old man 24-14

I dominated the game early going up 14-0

bangbang recovered a Desean Jackson punt return fumble for a td & things went downhill for the Iggles

Our offense went cold & we proceeded to give up 24 unanswered points.

I'm truly disgusted *drops mic & exits podium*
