Ridiculous contracts in Franchise mode (possible draft spoiler)

    So, I got the
    Spoiler
draft in my Cowboys Franchise and had to let go of Tony Romo the previous offseason due to salary cap issues, so I figured I would trade up to get the #3 overall pick to draft him. I had two 1st round picks (from the Romo trade), so I traded my 1st rounder and 2nd rounder to move up and draft Reno.

I went to sign him, and he wouldn't take anything less than the max contract I could offer him. I had to sign him to a 7-year, $112 Million deal, which is absolutely insane for a rookie QB, even a top 5 pick.

The problem is prevalent throughout all positions (although, it seems to be the worst among CBs), but this is the worst example I've encountered in 10 seasons' worth of off-season resignings, free agencies and drafts.

Also, on a side note, I was looking through the FA pool and was looking to sign a backup LG who was rated a 62 OVR and it said that I could sign him to a 1-year, deal for $750k (this was mid-season to replace an injured player), but when I went to sign him he kept wanting a 5-year, $25M deal. Anyone else seen that happen?

Typical... Franchise was supposedly going to be 'fixed at the roots' or whatever.

    So much for that.

What sucks if CPU is set on filling roster, he can sign that LG for the original asking amount. Something like 650k with no bonus...one thing I dislike the most in this years Madden.

i think that soon enough without a rookie cap we'll be there.i think its hilarious you can't sign rookies to 7 year deals anyways.

6 at most. read up on the CBA if you are a doubter.

if they do the draft like HC09 for M11, i'll literally be wiping manfluids off my xbox 360 for 3 months.

        by that i mean

a)include next year's default 7 picks for trades, with the correct values (1st next year=this year's 2nd, etc)
b)let me stockpile as much as i want a.k.a more than 10 picks a year(this would be perfect for an 80 man roster, but we won't see that ever.
c)rookie holdouts, actually feeling as if time went by instead of that damn signing screen.

what better way to utilize a new franchise hub (eerily similar to PS2 as far as the setup.) than to make it a real franchise mode?

They definitely need to do the draft like in hc09...i think they will next year.

as far as the rookie contract, i dont think thats too far-fetched. every year rookies are getting more and more money, and considering that you are a few years into your franchise, it seems entirely realistic to me to see a 7 year 112 million dollar rookie contract.

          those FA signings are ridiculous...agreed.

I just encountered that myself. Drafted a qb in the 1st round to replace Jason Campbell but he wanted more than i could offer. I said screw it and went to look for FAs.

Then I went to look where he ended up and he was signed by the Pats. They only had him and Brady on the roster. I was like thats crap. Then I looked and they signed him for 310k and no bonus. Seriously, that doesn't even make sense.

I was going to make my own thread about this but it applies here. I went to check to see who drafted who in the last draft. I quickly remember that there is no way to tell this.

My logic told me to check who the highest paid players were in my franchise. I found something shocking. My LT I drafted with the 8th pick was getting paid the most money out of all the rookies in the past 2 years. It looks like the CPU gets to sign its rookies to bargain deals compared to what the human has to do.

As far as FA are concerned, I am going to try and change the FA position to K or something to get their price down in a normal range.

I encountered the same problems. Here my solutions.

Injury signings during the season. When you want to play the game and the pop up comes that you have not enough player of that position, select user sign. Now you can sign the players to cheap one year contracts.

Signing draft picks. After the draft I change the franchise option to cpu sign. The cpu signs the drafted rookies always for less than Iám able to.

i had a 1st round OL do that to me. I was 2-14 the year before and when i tried to sign him (i didnt go upto 112 mill or whatever but i was way above his default asking salary) so I gave up and lost him. He mustve known M.Crabtree! On a sidenote.....I like how some FA's will not sign to your team. I always assume its cuz i have a ****ty team.

That's ********. Not you. The fact that one can do that. I personally like that it's more diffficult to manage your salary cap, and my 1st rd qb wanting ridiculous money was even cool. But he shouldn't just sign for the very minimum, with no bonus even, on another cpu controlled team. That's totally unrealistic. Even for a game.

on the upside you could have probably traded for him, giving up very little to get him (unless he was one of those rare 85+ovr rookies)

In many ways I think franchise mode in Madden 10 is a step down from 09, but I am still enjoying Madden 10 so far.

First time I played franchise I couldn't stand free agents as they would demand insane contracts to play on my team, but would sign for a minimum contract for another team the same week?!

Then I made it to my first off-season, where my own players where demanding ridiculous contracts e.g. my backup RT, who wanted to become the best paid OL on my team and among the top 10 best paid RTs in the game, so I didn't re-sign him and he signed for less than half the money to another team!! WHAT!?

There are many more examples like that and I eventually started "cheating" the AI, to get more realistic contracts - but not quite because it destroy the option to give them big signing bonuses.

                          What I do:
When I sign FAs during the pre- and regular season or re-sign players in off-season, I change their position first, e.g. turn a LT into a HB and then sign him, based on what other similar LTs are getting. However, when you do that the signing bonus feature breaks down and you can only give them, say, $1 million in signing bonus for a 4 year contract - no matter how good they are. However, this is up to you to give them realistic contracts based on ability, age and overall rating, as they would accept mostly anything you offer them. For instance I gave LT Gaither from the Ravens a 6 year/$35M contract, which seems fair enough to me.

And when I sign draft picks, I usually let my CPU handle the top picks e.g. sign picks taken in the late 2nd/early 3rd round and later myself and let the CPU sign my top picks as it get much more value than I would ever be able to get myself.

User signings are just crazy in this game. I have a franchise where I play all 32 teams. I was trying to resign players for the Bears , both their starting RE and LE were up for new contracts. I tried to sign them for asking contract and they would not take it, I played around for a while trying to sign them and the price got to high for both of them, so I said screw it I'll let the CPU do resignings, I don't have time to do this for all 31 teams I'm not playing.

So I let the CPU do the resign players and guess what, it resigned both those DE's for the asking contract price I could not even get close to. What is up with that? Why is it impossible for me the user to sign them to the SAME TEAM for anywhere close to that price when when I let the CPU do it, it resigns them with no issue for what they wanted?

This is not even fair or is it realistic.
Go Lions, Tigers, Pistons, Red Wings, Wolverines!

My only problem with this is that it will go and sign all the rookies (assuming you have the cap space), but I usually don't sign all my rookies. Oh well, it might be worth it to stop from having to pay 1st round picks/re-signings so much.

It would be nice if you could still select who you wanted to sign/resign when it was set to CPU control. Basically you would select who you wanted the CPU to try and sign (with a max offer so that it doesn't kill your cap signing someone who wants an obscene amount of money) and it will release the rest of them.
