Franchise Tag: broken or I am an idiot

I have used the franchise tag twice during one of my single player non-online franchises. It was easier to have this random guy as a stop gap 90ish RG than it would be to pay him a huge contract or start a developing scrub.

Imagine my shock when I look around week 4 to possibly trade him and he signed some 6 year 55 million dollar deal. What!?

I have all the options user, so I am in charge of everything. I later tried it again on mlb Mayo. I had a up and coming star MLB but he was not ready. Once again Mayo ends up with like a 5 year 58 million dollar deal or something.

Unless I am missing something the franchise tag is broken beyond recognition.

Team can sign players that you've slapped the franchise tag on ; they just have to give up a lot ( 1 round picks). I'm not sure exactly what they have to give up in order to sign a player whose been franchised.

Did you receive any extra picks ?

Re: Franchise Tag: broken or I am an idiot

I did not get any picks and my own team signed my franchised players without consulting me.

In each instance I wanted to tag a player, then trade him or let him go next FA.
Instead each time my own team signed them to huge and long deals without my approval.

Tag = 1 year tender or first round picks given up by another team. Not Madden 2010 saying they sign a 1 year deal then they are signed in 5+ year deals without user approval.

        Hey,

I was going to say that franchise tagging would be a huge bonus in a long franchise with the exact circumstances you stated before. I may be a total nerb, but for some reason I don't want that to happen to my guys (cpu signs to ridiculously long and overpaid contracts). They do need to fix it cuz having 2 extra firsts can really pay off when you have a guy you know you wont keep but still want to play.

On a related note, has anyone else been in a long franchise and even if you have all of the options on user, the cpu suddenly signs some of your guys to 6 year deals and totally kill your cap? For example, I have Vontae Davis for 2 more years and I have 2 up and coming CBs, suddenly when hes 30 yrs old, then CPU signs him for 6 years and pays him like 10mil a year. At 33 he has like 84 speed and sucks. I know that Madden has a glitch that changes all offseason activity to CPU at random times and they need to fix it. Anyone else see stuff like this?

Can franchise tag even work properly? I thought you couldn't trade future draft picks. Isn't the compensation for losing a franchise player two firsts?

Same thing happened to me. Everything randomly switched to CPU control without me knowing about it. I ended up saving my game after the re-signing period without noticing that the CPU had signed a bunch of guys to contracts I didn't want. It absolutely destroyed my cap and basically ruined my franchise which I'd been enjoying for weeks. I haven't played it in a very long time. To continue, I'd have to dismantle my team.

This bug - changing the controls to CPU randomly - was already in Madden 09.

Didnt notice yet, that its still in Madden 10 as well

hmm, I think the computer just does what it wants. I have a franchise where the computer signed a FA OT....but I had all computer decision making turned off.

I just reinvigorated my franchise with new slider settings and a move up to normal speed. I lost a playoff OT game to the Eagles after Hester fumbled a kickoff return.

And then this happened to me in the offseason. There were some guys I didn't re-sign. I wanted to make room in CAP and on the roster for some FA. But when it was time to draft, the CPU had signed the guys I hadn't signed.

                  It killed my offseason plans.

I remember in previous Maddens this would happen if you simmed multiple games and went below the minimum for certain positions. Was this the case or did the CPU signing get turned on randomly?

I've found the best way around this is to make sure its set to USER before resigning, before the draft, before signing draft picks, and at the start of every season. It seems to happen mostly when you advance to the off-season. I check the transaction list all the time, and save before games etc., so I've never been hit by this since I noticed it in last years game. Gotta be prepared. It can be annoying, but it can mean the difference between a ruined franchise and a 30 year completed franchise.

Think of it as being the owner/GM/whatever role you want, and having an insubordinate employee who goes behind your back (what Al Davis accused Lane Kiffin of) if you get hit by this bug and want to march forward. It can be fun to imagine things like this, and rebuilding a team is always fun(even if the team was just built)

You didn't happen to hire a new head coach in the off-season did you? For some reason all off-season options like resign players, fill roster etc. revert back to CPU control if you hire a new head coach. This "bug" has been in franchise mode for the last 2 or 3 years.

I find that this bug only occurs for me when I select the option to let the computer simulate some option for me. If you're on the resigning screen and you resign who you want and then back out to the main Franchise interface, press start, and select the "Simulate the rest of resignings" option, things will revert to all CPU settings. Same if you tell the CPU to autofill your roster during the season.

I always check the settings right before resigning and FA.

Just what I was thinking. The game treats new coaches as new users, so all settings revert back to original. I had this problem in Madden 09. Just check your franchise settings after signing any new head coach.
