I know nothing about soccer. Would you recommend this game?
I've been wanting to try a soccer game for awhile and I've heard that the Fifa series has been great for sometime. However, I know nothing about soccer at all. I don't know the rules, teams or players really. Would I still enjoy this game? Is the gameplay fun and addicting enough that once I would still like it without knowing the players/teams? Also, does the game have any sort of tutorial or things that can help teach me the nuances of the game?

Re: I know nothing about soccer. Would you recommend this game?

Man, you got interested after you saw that it was the only game I was playing on consistent basis.
I think games like FIFA do a good job of introducing you to the game that it tries to replicate. The gameplay is so addicting that it makes you want to learn more about the sport itself, the players, the teams, and the leagues. I introduced a friend of mine to FIFA 2008. Two years later he has a found a team to follow, knows about players from all over the world, and knows about all the different leagues.
I think FIFA does have tutorials, but I'm not entirely sure. -

Future420,
If I were you I would stay clear of this game.
If you don't know football/soccer you are going to be frustrated and confused by the gameplay and you won't enjoy the player details and team licensing like most people.
Total waste of your money.
I mean, assuming you play Madden or NBA...would you recommend Madden/NBA to someone who doesn't even know the rules or players?? Nahhh.Comment

How is one supposed to learn?
I learned the rules of hockey from playing the video games, and now I have a partial ST package for the CBJ. I love watching hockey now.
Video games are a great gateway to get into a sport. If he's shown interest in the sport, I don't see how getting the game can hurt.Comment

YES, BUY THE GAME.
I've always sort of been interested in soccer, but it wasn't until I watched this year's UEFA Champions League final between Barcelona and Man U that I really got hooked. I bought FIFA 09, have played the living crap out of it, and now purchased Fox Soccer Channel and am a huge soccer fan. It was a little frustrating at first, getting to know the game and positions and whatnot, but I got used to it.
PM me if you have any questions. I think I was in the exact same situation that you were in.Comment

Go for it!
I don’t know if there is a better introduction to a sport than a good video game. Over the years Madden has taught me a lot about football and though I was already a huge soccer fan soccer video games have really expanded my knowledge of teams and players.
I would also second the post about learning a lot about hockey from the NHL series. I have little to know interest in hockey, but I’ve always found the video game entertaining and by extension my appreciation of the real thing has grown.Comment

Re: I know nothing about soccer. Would you recommend this game?
I played soccer when I was a kid but never really paid enough attention to world soccer. I mean, yeah, I'd heard of Pele, Diego Maradona, and a few others, but I didn't follow it. Then, two things happened: 1) FIFA International Soccer was released by EA in the early 90's (EDIT: Wiki says '93) and 2) The World Cup was held in the U.S. in '94. Between those two things, I really began to follow the sport. Now I can't get enough of the World Cup and I've found myself following club football more. The FIFA games over the years have helped me to know who players are and such. I've finally picked a team to follow: Real Madrid. The main reason is I actually went to their stadium, Santiago Bernabeu, in 1999 and had no idea at the time just how big of a visit that would be for anyone that follows football/soccer.I've been wanting to try a soccer game for awhile and I've heard that the Fifa series has been great for sometime. Anyway, bottom-line, get the game. Crank the difficulty down and just play. It'll help you learn the game, teams, and players. I can tell you, I'm not as big a fan of club soccer as most of the folks are that post in here, nor am I as good a FIFA player as they are, but I do enjoy playing and I like knowing who plays where. So, get the game. I think you'll like it.Last edited by SlimKibbles; 10-11-2009, 08:56 PM.MLB: Cincinnati Reds

The basic rules are easy to learn. The strategies are more difficult but you can play at lower difficulty levels and never touch the formations or mess much with different strategies.
I understood the basics of soccer but didn't know much about the different leagues and tournaments outside of the World Cup until I bought Fifa 08. I only bought the game because Madden sucked so hard and now Fifa is probably my favorite sports game. Buy it.Comment

I would suggest you pick up the game. It's easy enough to play on the lower difficulty levels where you don't need to know all the little things about the sport to play. I knew a little bit about club football when I picked it up and since then my knowledge has grown and I now find myself being familiar with more teams from the smaller leagues. The Bluest Skies

Re: I know nothing about soccer. Would you recommend this game?
EA's FIFA series is what got me interested in soccer in the first place. FIFA's presentation and gameplay has improved over the years. It is as well made as the Madden, NHL, and NCAA college football games. You could always rent FIFA 09 or pick it up used first, then if you like it, get FIFA 10 when it comes out later in the month. Either way, you will probably enjoy the game, and get a greater appreciation for the sport, as well.Comment

Man I got introduced to soccer from borrowing Fifa 04 from a friend years ago. I used to hate the sport just like the average American. But after playing Fifa I learned the rules, teams, leagues, formations, etc... I became a soccer nut. I later moved on to Winning Eleven right after that. Looks like Fifa is back in the lead in soccer games for next gen. I have Gol TV and FSC as well. Fifa is a great way to learn the game. Cop it!YES, BUY THE GAME.

To the OP, if you don't want to risk spending $65 dollars on a game you might not like/understand, then you should rent it first.Comment
