Re: THIRD & LONG: A ST. LOUIS RAMS FRANCHISE

SEASON PREVIEW

St. Louis (AP) -- Its been half a decade since the St. Louis Rams have been to the playoffs. The team has really struggled over that span, finishing mostly in the bottom 5 of the league. This year the Rams took some positive steps to rebuilding a franchise that less than a decade ago was one of the NFL's elites. Steve Spagnuolo, the now former New York Giants defensive coordinator, ws hired as the team's new head coach. Spagnuolo will be taking over a team that have won only 5 of its last 32 game. "There is a whole bunch of talented guys here and I'm looking forward to working with them," Spagnuolo said when he was hired. Pat Shurmur and Ken Flajole will be the offensive and defensive coordinators. Kevin Demoff was hired as the VP of Football Operations. Veteran reciever Torry Holt was let go along with OL Orlando Pace. Spagnuolo brought in a member of his New York Giants defense, James Butler. FB Mike Karney was brought in to help lead the block for young RB Steven Jackson. The Rams had the 2nd overall pick in the draft and selected offensive tackle Jason Smith out of Baylor. James Laurinaitis, Brooks Foster amongst others were picked by the Rams. They traded for Falcons WR Laurent Robinson.
