Vikings extend contract with Brad Childress through 2013

    http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=4671558

The Minnesota Vikings signed Brad Childress to a contract extension that will keep the coach with the team through the 2013 season, a source told ESPN.com Thursday.

Financial terms weren't immediately available but the deal is believed to be between $4 million and $5 million a year, the source said. In 2006, Childress signed a five-year, $10 million contract, which was scheduled to expire after the 2010 season.

"Brad has done a tremendous job leading this football team and we value the positive environment he has created for the Minnesota Vikings on and off the field," Vikings owner Zygi Wilf said in a statement. "He has continued to positively impact this team and create a strong foundation for future success."

The Vikings are off to an 8-1 start with Brett Favre at quarterback. Childress' record in Minnesota is 32-25. The Vikings made the playoffs last year and are trying to get the top seed in the NFC.

Both sides have been working on a deal for the past several months. The agreement came together Thursday morning.

As a team, the Vikings are loaded. They have 22 players on their roster who are in the top five in fan voting for the Pro Bowl.

"My family and I are very fortunate to be a part of the Minnesota Vikings organization," Childress said in a statement. "I value the opportunity to continue to lead this team over the next several years as we work toward our ultimate goal of winning a Super Bowl for our passionate fans everywhere."
Good for him. Not really surprised. Only problem is Brett Favre is the main reason they're as good as they are this year and he's certainly not going to be there 2-3 years from now.. well I guess nothing would surprise me with Brett Favre anymore.

The main reason is Adrian Peterson. Brett Favre was handed the keys to a Bentley.

He should spend his new found riches on a chauffeur for Brett to take him back and forth between the airport.

Are the Vikings going to regret this once Brett retires? I think so. I never thought Childress was a particularly good coach until he got Brett. Brett makes a lot of guys that aren't geniuses look like they're geniuses.

What Childress needs most to justify this extension is for Tarvaris Jackson to thrive when Brett retires.

You could say that. But without Favre, they wouldn't be nearly as great as they've been this year. You could also say without Peterson they wouldn't be that great either. But since Peterson isn't leaving anytime soon, and Favre is, I think it's safe to question Minnesota's future, particularly with the QB situation.

They did have 10 wins with Gus Frerotte @ QB for most of the year last year. But I get your point no Favre no 8-1 start. But I really think Tavaris will be a damn good QB when he gets a real chance to get the keys.

They are the exact same team as last year except for Harvin being added.

Brett Favre has been the MVP of that team.

Once again they won 10 games and their division last year. Despite Gus Frerotte being 2nd in INT after only playing 9.5 games. He was terrible if they would have stuck with Tarvaris they would have won 12 or 13 games last year. Im impressed with Brett Favre's play how could you not. But when you have the best player in football behind you and an outstanding D it makes things easier. Not to mention Harvin has been a HUGE addition.

Wow you obviously didn't catch many vikes games last year, "T-Jack" was the terrible QB, no way they win 12-13 with him at QB last year. Why do you think they brought in #4 because they know there QBs suck

Favre is making like 12Mil this season. He's getting more than a fair share.

Oh I know he is but since he IS the MAIN reason this even got done, I figured he'd be getting a piece of the pie as well. Considering the fact that if he doesn't go after Favre or Favre stays retired this season that he is pretty much coaching for his job again this year just like he was last year.
