I don't condone those actions but those were the days when tempers reached extreme heights and the fights were men against men.

What, you want me to throw out names? I don't know who is in the NHL front office but what I do know is that under Bettman I don't see the league getting back into respectability.

Not that I'm defending Bettman or anything, but when exactly was the NHL "respectable"?

The NHL had 2 golden opportunities to breakthrough in the USA. The first one was in the late 1980's. They were growing in popularity on ESPN. The NHL then dumped ESPN for Sportschannel in 1988....

The second chance was 1994. Baseball was on strike again, MJ quit hoops and the Rangers were making a playoff run. The Rangers playoff run captured the nation. The Rangers Stanley Cup run Combined with the EA Sports game had hockey at an all time high in popularity. Insert Gary Bettman.... With the game at an all time high in popularity in the states, he decides to have a lockout, killing all the momentum they had gained. The league has yet to recover.

Colin Campbell, (the next two if they want to take the promotion) Brian Burke, Jimmy Rutherford, (not realistic but i'd hire him in a heartbeat) David Branch

I'll agree with you there. The '04 lockout was a necessary evil IMO. Too few people remember that the '94 one was far more harmful. The worst possible time for the owners to attempt to break the union, and worse yet, they caved without accomplishing anything other than a rookie cap. Whoopee.

i wasn't around for those good ole times but you can't help but respect the way the game was played back then. the difference between the game then and the game now is the lack of respect players have for each other on the ice.

Specifics, please. Have you watched any games from the 70s, 80s, or 90s? I have. Lots of them. Spearing and stick-swinging incidents were MUCH more common then than they are today.

Things were no different before that. The two most revered players of the pre-expansion era were Gordie Howe and Rocket Richard. If they played in the modern age with the same "level of respect" they showed other players back then, they'd be reviled. Howe was one of the dirtiest (and toughest) players who ever laced up skates. The Richard Riot of '55 started after The Rocket deliberately struck an opposing player's head with his stick, then knocked a linesman unconscious when he tried to restrain him! Was that "showing respect"?

Players have been brutal to each other since the get-go. The only difference now is that they're bigger, faster, and have their every move scrutinized because all games are televised (and because of forums like this one). That's all.
