    NHL Considering Trophy Name Changes

The Hart Memorial Trophy, for the most valuable player, would be named instead after Gordie Howe. The Art Ross, for scoring, would be named after Wayne Gretzky, the most prolific scorer in league history.

The Norris trophy, given to the NHL's top defenceman, would be named after Bobby Orr, who revolutionized the position. The Calder trophy, for rookie of the year, would be named after Pittsburgh great Mario Lemieux.
Another fantastic idea from the NHL brass!

When i read this i thought they were changing the name of the Stanley Cup but yeah i agree i dont like this move. They should just keep the name.

    Soccer: FC Dallas, Fleetwood Town
    NCAA: SMU, UTA
    NFL: Dallas Cowboys
    NHL: Dallas Stars
    NBA: Dallas Mavericks

Don't give Bettman any ideas about changing the name of the Stanley Cup...

Oh yeah, sacrifice historic trophy names for more modern names. Great, I guess the NHL will do like the NFL and forget anything happened before 1970.

I guess the Jack Adams would be called the Scotty Bowman now?

Why does anyone care if the trophies continue to be named after owners and what-not?

Those guys contributed little or nothing to the NHL other than collusion.

Stupid. Only change them if they're gonna be "MVP", "Scoring Champion", etc.

This idea is so horrible I wonder if Gary Bettman came up with it. Either Healy or Milbury on Hot Stove (I forgot which one) said it wasn't a bad idea.

I'm not a hardcore purist but I don't want to see the names changed.

Actually most of the trophies were donations and are memorial trophies. So even if you want to throw out the history and tradition argument you still have the fact that it would be a slap in the face of the family that donated said trophies.

I did hear a suggestion this morning that if they really want to do this then they should retire the current trophies and make new trophies with the modernized names.

Re: NHL Considering Trophy Name Changes

Changing the name's won't get fans excited. This is a cheap solution for a bigger problem. These types of ideas have to send out a signal to change up management.

It's unbelievable how the NHL will try to make their league more appealing to fans in a superficial way, but won't change key aspects (IE game rules) to make the game more entertaining to watch.

The name change idea is BS and a cheap fix, it won't even fix anything really.

I say leave the names and trophies as they are. If the NHL does want to change the names then I agree to get new trophies as well.

the names are classic, they have to keep it the same way. if they were to make a new trophy then obviously it would need a new name which should be named after an old time player who hasn't been recognized yet. gotta keep the tradition

I think it was a much bigger deal when they changed the Campbells and Wales confrences the East and West and that happened no problem. They just did it. Divisions used to matter. You would win your division in the playoffs play the other division winner in the confrence final. (there were only four divisions) and then you would go against the winner of the other confrence for the cup.
Divisions are almost pointless now. The only spot that matters in them is who gets first. I wish they would go back to four divisions. Top four in each make playoffs. 1st vs 4th, 2nd vs 3rd. It makes the divisions and rivalries so much better. I would almost say rivalries are dead. Flames Oilers sure isn't what it used to be. Toronto Ottawa seem to hate each other a bit. Being your division champ now isn't even worth a banner. It's just regular season that matters.

I beg to differ, as a Sens fan behind enemy lines, its pretty brutal, i try not to show my colours in leaf fan areas. But its not like wearing a Chargers fan at a Raiders game.

Not the fans man. The players in the game. There isn't that hate on with the players in the game. As I said earlier the Leafs and Sens to me seem to have a bit of hate. Between the teams not the fans. Me and my cousin got into a fight with some Sens fans in Calgary just last year. I know how it is with the fans.
I remember he asked us when the last time we made the playoffs was and, my cousin answering, I don't know I guess it was the last time we put you guys out? lol, so true. The Leafs were always putting the Sens out. The fans have the hate. I know that, but not so much the players themselves. I think Bettmans format changes may have something to do with it. I'm from Toronto man. That whole city is a bullseye for someone in a Sens jersey.

Unlike when the changed the old division names as its stuff like this that seperates the NHL from other Major sports .
