Re: Taking the Big East By [Red] Storm - CH2k9

              Off-Season Recruiting Period: Day #1

On the first day that recruits were allowed to sign their Letters of Intent in the off-season, four of the Red Storm's targets signed, but only one will end up at St. John's. First, the ones that got away.

Kris Schneider, 5'11" point guard out of Queens, NY, got away from Norm Roberts and signed with Coach K and the Duke Blue Devils. He is the #10 prospect in the class and would have filled a huge need for this roster, but unfortunately his heart wasn't all for playing close to home.

Jonathan Jensen, 5'9" point guard from Amarillo, TX, actually wanted to stay close to home and ended up signing with Kansas State. He's the #17 overall prospect in the class and Norm Roberts had hoped he would be the fall back plan in case Schneider signed elsewhere. Yet another swing-and-miss on an elite point guard prospect for the Red Storm.

A late addition to the target list, Hal Diagne, signed with his local school in Portland. Diagne, a 6'4" shooting guard from Federal Way, WA, would have been more of a luxury pick than a need, but at this point, the Red Storm just need to get able bodies on the roster. Like Schneider and Jansen, he got away as well.

One player knew he wanted to be at St. John's and made it known immediately. Eduardo Roller, a 6'9" power forward from New York City was SJU-bound right from the get-go. He looks to be the replacement for Justin Burrell and gives the Red Storm a great group of big men to build around between the now-sophomore Ebi Faulkner and fellow signee Dan Cooper.

The Red Storm now have five remaining scholarships that they can offer, if they choose. They currently have two on the table. One is to small forward Bradley Korver, a 6'5" four-star prospect out of New Haven, CT. With SJU the only program currently pursuing Korver, he's a lock to sign with the Red Storm.

As deep as the Red Storm's front court is, you can never have enough big men. Going international, the fifth scholarship offer heads out to New Zealand to Aaron Collins, a 6'11" center. Not much information is known about this kid, but watching one of his tapes showed us that he is a good, possibly great, rebounder and that's all he would be needed for.

A tune-up game against AEC's Hartford Hawks allowed Norm Roberts to show off his very talented recruiting class, known as the Sensational Seven. Two of the freshmen were in the starting lineup, as Lenny Minard started at the one and Mr. Everything Erik Clark stepped in for the graduated DJ Kennedy. Minard had a modest six point, two assist game while Clark tied for a game-high 17 points with junior shooting guard Sherman Richards. Sophomore Ebi Faulkner assumed the starting spot at power forward and responded with a career-high 12 rebounds while Erik Domercant kept his starting spot at the five and played only 11 minutes, allowing the freshmen to get some good playing time.

Perhaps the top recruit of SJU's class, Eduardo Roller, came off the bench to score 14 points, grab five rebounds, drop two assists and swat two shots while shooting five for six from the floor and hit both of his free throw attempts. Sharp-shooting Jerrod Richardson started where he left off last year and came off the bench with 10 points. The other four freshmen combined for 16 points, nine rebounds and five assists and will be expected to make solid contributions all season long.

St. John's got all it could handle from Alabama A&T as they trailed the entire game until there was two minutes and 26 seconds remaining in the entire game! The defense was horrendous as the Red Storm allowed them to shoot well over 50% from the floor for the entire game. Free throw shooting, which looked to be a strong point in the first game of the season was embarrassing as they shot a pitiful 19-35 from the line.

Stud freshman Eduardo Roller kept the team afloat with his 17 points, most of which coming in the first half. The second half was all Sherman Richards, as he scored 13 of his 15 points in the final 16 minutes. This was supposed to be a game that the Red Storm rolled over their opponent, but with such a young team, you're going to have hiccups like this.
