Honestly, what is the L2 trigger for?

I 've been playing on PS3 and can't figure out qhat this button is suppose to do. I hold it with the player and they post up but is this also the button to be pressed when kobe does his iconic fade away off the post? Thanks for the advice guys....

Have you been in the Freestyle Practice? That's a great place to get a good feel.

Hold it for bank shots when you're in an appropriate position

You need it if you want to perform up and unders in the post.

And for DEFENSE you use it in conjunction with the R2 and Triangle to do a monster block. I ALWAYS use L2 and R2 for blocking.
