Re: Is Brett Favre going to retire?
I understand how you feel, but I just don't understand your state of euphoria missing the SB on one play.I have always got A's or B's in school. It is easy for me that is why I have 2 Masters degrees. But to be honest if I only had to get C's to get my Masters, I would have no problem what so ever taking C's. C's are good too! All you want it the credits. Until to you go do your undergrad work. It is so hard to win a Super Bowl, so I am happy my team got to the Championship game. How many teams can say that. When was the last time they made it to the NFC title game? In my eyes Brett did more than I thought he would. I though they would make the playoffs, but I did not think they would make the Super Bowl. I thought the East would be in it. So I am happy.
For 16 yrs, I've watched Favre make great plays and boneheaded plays like he did on Sunday. I used to say the same as you, and be all happy and giddy over Favre. The happiness and giddiness slowed down considerably when I noticed Favre couldn't handle the pressure of an important playoff game after the year 1998.
6 Int's against the Rams, a playoff loss to Michael Vick at Lambeau, which I'm sure Favre threw a pick or two, the embarrassing mooning of Moss playoff loss where Favre threw a few picks, the last pass in the NFC Championship Game against the Eagles in OT was a pick and the last pass against the Giants in 2008 Championship Conference game was a pick.
I noticed a pattern developing. Brett can't handle pressure situations very well. History has a odd thing of repeating itself and it did again on Sunday.
You can say all you want how happy you are Brett brought you this far and Brett is the one that brought you this far, etc......., but if it was me, I'd be burning a hole in my gut.
As you said, it's hard to win the SB, any Viking fan would know that.(just kidding on that one, couldn't pass it up, though) It's hard enough to get to the SB, let alone win one. Chances like these don't come very often.
You have to seize the moment.Comment

Re: The Brett Favre Saga
To be honest Road I have been a Vikings fan since I was 5 years old. So if they go to a Super Bowl I want it to be a slam dunk Super Bowl. Where they win for sure. I don't think the Vikings would beat Manning, so I am happy they didn't go. I do not want the vikings to be the only team to lose 5 Super Bowls. And that is what would have happen in my opinion if they played the Colts. Manning is just too good. So I am OK with them not going. I would have supported them if they go, but still I am OK with it. About Brett if he didn't throw though TD's and move those chains we would not be talking about the INT. He kept us in the game and he did all he could to help us win. Sure it was a bad decision, but when you are trying to get into FG range you take those chances. So it is apart of the game. I still blame Brad for some very bad calls at the end and his time management at the end. But what can you do.Comment

Re: Is Brett Favre going to retire?
You can keep thinking that, but that is not the real reason. Brett give him the chance to make plays and he did it. Plain and simple. TJ would be able to do that. We will see next year. The good news is Rice now knows he can make plays and that will go a long way with him. I hope TJ or Sage can do what all you think they can do, but I am not sold on that yet.Comment

Re: The Brett Favre Saga
I look at it like this Road. And I mean this big time. I used to be like you with Brett. I used to say "you trust your arm to much, just make the safe play. " Then I said "you would win more Super Bowl if you did that." But the last 3 years I changed my mind on that. Why? Because if he changed you probably wanted have a chance to get to the Super Bowl. Because a lot of time those chances he takes did work. I watched enough games to see that first hand. That is Brett's game and if you changed that you would not have the same QB! So therefore you would proably not even make the playoffs. At least that is the way I see it.Comment

Scott, I can only go on past experiences in the playoffs. I can't and won't get into seasonal play. It's a whole different atmosphere playoffs vs season.I look at it like this Road. When Favre had Holmgren for a coach, Holgren would hold Favre accountable for throwing those Int's. After Holmgren left, Favre was the coach and he started to dictate things.
All I know Scott, is those chances didn't work in the playoffs over the past decade. Brett plays and is paid by the Minnesota Vikings, not the other way around. It's not his game, it's up to the coaches to tell him his job is on the line if he throws an Int in a playoff game.
There are other QB's in past history that didn't take the chances Brett does and their teams make the playoffs and win SB's.
How many QB's in past history were in the SB's that were gunslingers? Not very many, wouldn't you agree?
So, based on those percentages, do you still agree that a QB like Favre has a better chance of getting you to the SB vs other QB's that don't take chances like Favre?
Based on his past playoffs performances, I would want someone like Rodgers on my team vs Brett.
I didn't feel that way before, but I do now.Comment

Come on Dude, there is no such thing as a slam dunk Superbowl win..Comment

Re: The Brett Favre Saga
I havent cycled through these threads but I am going to rant anyway, no offense to anybody........
1) So what if Brett Favre retires and unretires? Some other players do it too but you don't see the fanbase in an uproar about it. Junior Seau has retired more times than Brett has, Testaverde did too.
2) So what if Brett Favre plays for the Vikings? Other players have done it and the fanbase doesnt get in an uproar about it. Drew Bledsoe to Bills anyone? Fiedler to Jets? Alot of players go to their division rivals. LaVar Arrington, Antonio Pierce, Aaron Stecker, Warrick Dunn......need I go on?Comment

Yeah, yeah please do, did any of those players lead their team to a SB victory at one time and then cross the state line to go their rival? Are any of those individuals on the same playing field as Favre? Need I go on?
Since you haven't been keeping up, I feel Brett should play as long as he wants. He should dictate when his career is over, not some team.
I do have a problem with him playing for the Bears, Lions or Vikes. It didn't matter he went to the Jets last year with me.
If you have issues on that, have at it.Comment

Re: The Brett Favre Saga
1. The "retires and unretires" has been with how Favre handles the situation. Retiring and coming back as a starter a week before the season starts is poor handling of the situation, especially when he expects to be handed the job (as was the case in Green Bay). I don't remember Vinny retiring, and Seau retired after being cut and then got a call a year later to play for the best team in the NFL. Plus, there's a huge difference between an old injured linebacker or a back up quarterback and a legitimate Pro Bowl caliber quarterback.I havent cycled through these threads but I am going to rant anyway, no offense to anybody........

2. As far as I know, all of those players were cut by their original teams. If Favre wanted to start in 2008 and 2009 for the Packers, it was well within his power to do so by not retiring after the 2007 season.Comment

You're really comparing Jay Fiedler's situation to Brett Favre?I havent cycled through these threads but I am going to rant anyway, no offense to anybody........

Brett Favre was absolutely beloved in Wisconsin. We, as fans, gave to his charity, supported him when his dad died, supported him when his wife had breast cancer, and then he turns around and smacks us in the face by going to play for our rival just because he's pissed at one guy.
Comparing Fiedler, or Bledsoe, or any of them to the Favre situation is absurd.Member: OS Uni Snob Association | Twitter: @MyNameIsJesseG | #WT4M | #WatchTheWorldBurn

Why did you guys support him? Sounds like you both got a lot out of this relationship, but at the end of the day it is still a business. Which sucks for us fans. Because just like the children in messy divorce, we suffer most! You're really comparing Jay Fiedler's situation to Brett Favre?

Re: The Brett Favre Saga
It's something that a lot of fans can't separate and I'm one of those. I have already recognized that Favre has the right to play till when he feels like it, except for the Lions, Bears and Vikings and lately, the latter two. If you feel we are the only 2 Packer fans feeling that way, you need to know more about Packer fans. 90% of Packer fans that called into the local sports radio show in Milwaukee didn't want to see the Vikings in the SB with a #4 purple jersey.
I've never seen Tarkenington, Eller, Page, Krause, Foreman, Chris Carter, Moss, Culpepper, Gene Washington, etc..... cross state lines to their rival, "just to stick it to the Vikings."
It's similar to you supporting Favre after one season vs all those 16 years playing for the green n gold.
Let's just hope for Viking fans sake he doesn't draw out the drama to make his decision whether he's playing or not.
He should take a lesson from Kurt Warner in that area.Last edited by roadman; 01-28-2010, 08:16 AM.Comment
