    Civilization V

hose worried that Sid Meier and Firaxis Games' upcoming free-to-play Facebook effort would mark an end to Civilization as it is known can rest a bit easier. 2K Games today announced that in addition to the upcoming Civilization Network, the strategy specialist studio is also working on Civilization V for the PC, with an expected release this fall.

That's not to say Civilization V won't change up the franchise's formula. For example, the game is being built on an all-new engine, and for the first time the series will move to a hexagonal playfield grid. 2K is also promising an "entirely new" combat system with ranged bombardment options, animated world leaders who will speak in their own languages, and a built-in community hub allowing players to swap scenarios and other content without leaving the game.

Last year came and went without a new Civilization title from Firaxis, although the studio had two major efforts released in 2008. First up was Civilization Revolution, the critically acclaimed streamlined edition of the series for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Nintendo DS. Later in the year, the studio wrapped up its work on Civilization IV with the launch of a final expansion, the New World-focused Civilization IV: Colonization.

Firaxis' other current announced project, Civilization Network, is set for launch sometime this year.

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is my Favorite video game franchise, I still play Civ 4 weekly(its over 3 years old). It looks like they are fixing my ONLY gripe with Civ, the Combat. Looks like I am buying a New PC this fall...

Nice. I used to play Civ 4 ALOT. I might have to blow the dust off of it to remember the good days. :P

      Re: Civilization V

Sounds great, will be interested to hear more about it in the future. It will be interesting to see how much they change in V. Civ IV was the pinnacle of the series (only II came close to me, and that is largely based on nostalgia).

I personally would like more attention payed to the first age or so of development (ancient). I felt like the real game never started until late medieval/renaissance to the point where the ancient stage lacked any real character as everybody just wanted to get through it as fast as possible on to better things.

If I had to pick one game and only one game to play forever it would be Civ because the depth. I have been thinking about starting a new epic for months but I know the time commitment. I think i am close to making that step now. Great news! CIV IV was so it good its going to be tough to top but I am sure they will do it. Can't wait!

                            IGN

The draw of Civilization and strategy games like it has always been a strong one. You're given the opportunity to build an entire empire and oversee its development into a major power. Along the way you'll construct huge armies, manage production and the well-being of the populace in your cities, and tangle with other nations with the hopes of either establishing a mutually beneficial diplomatic relationship or stomping their whiny faces into the dirt. In Civilization V, the goal is just the same, only with a lot of new ways to go about doing it.

What do you guys figure the CPU requirements will be? I love Civ - have since I had the original version on my 386 way back when - but I really am not going to buy a new rig just to play Civ5...
