Personally, I think its better than sudden death rules that are established now. It also makes playoff overtime more exciting to watch, especially to see if the other team could come back and score. Would you want this rule to apply to regular season games and remove tie games? Your thoughts?

Re: NFL could change overtime format for playoffs
I always thought that the best solution would be to have the first team to 6 points win. -

The only fair solution is 7 minute quarters until someone wins.Comment

Re: NFL could change overtime format for playoffs
Just like ive said in the past, there's no need to change the rules regarding OT and/or ties and that there's really an easy solution to cease all the hoopla about OT/Ties.#RespectTheCultureComment

I wanted the OT format changed w/ a passion. After seeing the Packers and Cardinals playoff game, I am now a believer of the current systemOriginally posted by MoJust once I'd like to be the one they call a jerk off.Originally posted by MoYou underestimate my lazinessOriginally posted by Mo**** ya

Re: NFL could change overtime format for playoffs
I'd either like to see the college system, but start teams around the 40 or 50, or shortened quarters until someone wins.
I hate that it is possible for one team to win the game without the other getting a possession.Comment

Wouldn't the proposed idea take care of that though?Comment

Re: NFL could change overtime format for playoffs
What does hockey have anything to do with the NFL? Completely different season lengths and playoff set-ups. I don't see how you can compare the two.
We are talking about adding 1 extra possession to the small percentage of games that go into OT...Of the games that go into OT, I remember reading the percentage of games that get decided on the first possession are relatively low.
Making this change throughout the season has minimal impact and is no way comparable to adding unlimited OT in the regular season of a hockey game nor is it comparable.Comment

Re: NFL could change overtime format for playoffs
Possible but difficult to do without risking running yourself out of downs. If your goal is to milk the clock you could end up with a 4th down you can't convert.
In any event the unfair pro-offensive rules would not give the winner of the coin toss such a massive uncompetitive advantage.Comment

I disagree with this statement and this coming from me who's team was on the short end.. We had chances to stop them but we didn't..Comment

Re: NFL could change overtime format for playoffs
An overtime concept that I am not sure would work, but I find interesting is that instead of a coin flip, each team would bid for starting field position. Who ever is willing to start deeper in their own territory, gets the ball there and you play sudden death as normal.
A potential problem is if BOTH teams are willing to take they ball at their one inch line. So this might not fly. But I tend to believe there is a point where a coach would rather give up the ball. Would you want to start OT on the edge of your own goaline where you have to worry about a safety?....And if you do go 3 and out, the opponent will end up with very good field position.Comment
