MLB: The Show 10 (PSP) Impressions

Does anyone have any impressions of the psp version of the game yet? If so I'm very interested to know of any changes or additions to the game. In particular I want to know about changes to franchise and create a player, and any new stances (and of course to my beloved New York Mets). If any one has any information please post--although I'm going to warn you that your PM box will be flooded with my follow up questions

I reserved the game and don't get it until Tuesday like everyone else but I am curious if others might have played it already as I'm antsy for some information.

Re: MLB: The Show 10 (PSP) Impressions

*Apologies mods, this isn't an impression and I don't have the game yet, but I want it where the most people who will play the PSP version can see it. Feel free to move if you want, though*

Before we hit release day and the impressions start rolling in, there's something that I feel needs to be said. I was hoping something would come out about it in previews, or someone would notice it in the available information and post about it. But that hasn't happened, so consider this your caveat emptor about the PSP version:

There is no infrastructure online play (i.e. SportsConnect) in the PSP version of MLB '10 The Show.

2 player Ad-Hoc is, according to the back of the box, still in the game.

This is what I meant by "the available information": http://www.gamestop.com/Catalog/PopB...oduct_ID=75712

It's clearly marked on the box that it is only Ad-Hoc (as opposed to '09's box which seperately mentions infrastructure and ad-hoc). Despite that, I can see how people might run out and buy it without looking, find out it's not there, and then come back here to cry about false advertising. I'm trying to head that off.

With that out of the way...assuming it's in-store on Tuesday when I go to pick up the PS3 version, I'll be coming back with both the PSP and PS3 versions and will be glad to give my impressions. It just so happens that online play doesn't concern me in the least when dealing with the PSP version.

Speaking of which, do people know if it's supposed to come out as the same time as the other versions (i.e. March 2nd). I certainly hope so as I can't wait to play the new version.

Finally, if anyone has any updates please feel free to share as it could help whet some of our appetites for information.

Thanks for the info, bcruise. Online doesn't interest me, either. My question: does no Sports Connect mean no PSP roster updates too?

That's a very good question, and one that I hadn't thought about. Sportsconnect was the hub for downloading roster updates, and with that not there something's going to have to be changed up. My guess is that they would provide a download from a website or something - I can't imagine that the updates would be removed completely. But it's just that - only a guess.

I am sure it will be linked through the show community website.

Nice, was not sure if this was included in the psp version.

Rely on the catcher's opinion in Catcher Calling the Game mode

On the other hand, i hope that no online game doesn't mean no weekly roster downloads either.

Re: MLB: The Show 10 (PSP) Impressions

I'm almost certain that they won't get rid of downloadable rosters.
The much bigger question for me from what was posted is about the custom batting stances. I haven't heard about that at all. Is that confirmed in the psp version and what is that exactly? I hope it's more than just the normal preset batting stances and perhaps some sort of create a stance mode which would awesome. Does anyone have more info on this mode?

Re: MLB: The Show 10 (PSP) Impressions

A few quick impressions from an exhibition game and messing around a bit in RTTS:

Basically what I've seen so far are a few REALLY good things, some negatives, and a whole lot of "meh". The "meh" largely stems from the fact that the game truly does look and sound a lot like last year. The umpire call overlays have been changed up and are pleasantly quite a bit less obtrusive than last year's, but aside from that, it's honestly hard to find too many changes graphically at least so far. I haven't heard very much new commentary to this point either (keep in mind it was only one game).

That said, the gameplay isn't bad or anything - it does a really good job of capturing the Show's unique core gameplay without the extra flash and animations the PS3 is capable of. Playing my first game on Veteran, the Cardinals shellacked Zambrano for 6 runs in the first 2 innings. After that I calmed down and rolled, while my offense began to get on track. Final score ended up being 8-5 Cardinals, but I came away with a good feeling from the gameplay itself. Oh...and I walked 3 times.

The thing is, the good things I've noticed help bring a bit more life into the game, even though it may be largely the same. First and foremost - load times. Oh yes, they're better - MUCH better. On my digital copy games load in 20 seconds, which I believe is pretty comparable to the PS3 load time. Last year's '09? Over a minute. Granted, that was my UMD version and that fact may be mostly to blame for it, but that's still a HUGE speed increase. It'll be interesting to hear the impressions from this year's UMD version owners.

Nowhere is the load time decrease more evident than in Road to the Show, where last year I found that I was spending as much time in loading screens as I was actually playing in my games. I felt it was near unplayable due to this, and I'm very happy that this is improved, at least in the digital copy.

The other big positive I wanted to mention is the frame rate - it appears to have been given a lift this year. I don't have a great eye for this stuff, but I do believe this game is running faster and smoother than last years, especially with the pitcher's meter on screen and when the camera moves out to the outfield. '09 had trouble holding what appears to be a smooth picture at times, but '10 seems smooth just about all the time. It's probably an average difference of 5-10 FPS, but it makes a huge difference in the appearance of the game when it can stay around 30 FPS.

A few negative points (mostly stuff I had hoped would be in, but isn't):

Throwing meter: Was hoping this might make the transition over to PSP, but it's still the same non-meter meter that we're all quite familiar with.
RTTS Baserunning: Ugh - it's still stick/nub based, unless I'm missing a control setting somewhere. Tolerable for me, not so for others.
RTTS Catcher calling the game: Nope, not there.

It seems pretty clear both from talking to the SCEA guys and now playing the game that the focus was on improving the existing experience, rather than trying to add a bunch of new features. Whether I agree with that decision or not, I still think it plays a pretty darn good game of baseball for the small screen, which is what I bought it for.

Is it enough to warrant another $40? I think it depends on just how much last year's issues bothered you, and whether you can enjoy the Show without all its flash. For me personally, that's a definite yes. I'm going to get a ton more use out of RTTS this year, and that alone is almost enough for it to be worth it to me.

BTW, I'm going to try to take a short vid of Target Field (one of the obvious graphic additions - it is definitely in). Any suggestions on the other team? I'll even show the intro/loading screen so you guys can see for yourself how quick it goes.

                          Umm no catcher playcalling??

A few post above it was posted this:

Now i don't know if to buy it or not from the PSN store, as for what you say it's almost like past year one with no new features and i'm buying the PS3 version anyway.

Thanks for the lengthy and detailed impression.

Please post more impressions when you have the chance for us less fortunate. In particular I want to know if there are any changes to franchise (I.e. Season) or create a player.

                            Thanks and have fun.
