I was trying to get an online game going with my friend. We tried to connect to each other for 30 minutes and kept getting "failed to connect." We both tried play now and were able to connect immediately to other opponents. With that being said, is there a problem that I'm not aware of? Any feedback would be helpful.

I had this issue as well. We tried to connect through the game lobbies and it failed. I sent him a challenge outside of the lobby and we were able to connect. I've had similar problem with NHL 2010. I know they are made by different developers but the problems are the same. Check your NAT status under your network settings after running a test. I believe its best for the PS3 to be a NAT type 2. -

Like mentioned make sure you both have a Type 2 NAT setting.
Also, make sure one of you don't have too strict of a firewall. I had an issue a while back with the 360,where I could not connect to my one friend, nor can he connect to the games I was in, only other people.
