    Be a GM Drafting Help

I can never seem to draft a good player even with all the scouting I do. I guess I just don't understand what to do really. Can somebody share their draft strategies/ help out?

I'd be very interested too, to read other peoples ideas and suggestions about drafting. I'm getting fairly close to my first off season...and I feel kinda in the dark as to what to really be looking for.

From my experience, all the scouting and stuff is really useless unless you have a Level 5 scouting staff. Actually, it seems to be the case for everything (player development, trade block, scouting etc.).

You have to have the higher level staff before you actually get any accurate information.

Another option, albeit a cheap one, is to save just before the draft and go through it to see who the good prospects are and just load your save file.

I always play the Prospects game (split down middle so i play for world for first half and NA for second half) it helps give you an idea on how fast a guy can skate, or how hard he can shoot things like that. As far as drafting a player with a Good rating well its kind of luck for me, i noticed that not always the top prospects have the highest overall ratings so i would also like to figure out a better way to tell their attributes

You can see the rating for the players on the Prospect teams.
Play the game, pause it & go to Players stats. Or you can check after the game if you want to play it.

You won't be able to see all individual ratings, but is gives you an idea of what you might draft.
This way you can get a 77 & not a 72 in the 1st round.

A piece of advice is that you shouldn't expect the guys you draft to be NHL ready as soon as you draft them. Unless your picking in the top 5-10 then its usually best to have your prospects play in the minors and develop.

Also use the training menus so that you can assign your prospects to do certain training events that will improve their weak areas. I notice that a lot of rookies seem to have bad shots so if you assign them to do the shooting training then they should improve there depending on offensive potential and stuff like that.

MY draft pix always spend @ least 1 season on my AHL team.
I only bring them up if I get a few injuries.

I edited the 1st prospects with Petr Pucks CAP's, so Hall started his 1st year for me.

Re: Be a GM Drafting Help

What i used to do in 09 and '10 before i got Level 5 staff is draft the best player i could based on ratings available, then write down the next 5 or so players drafted after me. I did this for the first 3rds and when free agency began i could see how the others rank compared to mine. I'd write down their attributes and then quit / upload and re do the draft.

What i do now is looking at D awareness rating as one of my main deciding factors.

For defensemen, my threshold is to be 80 D awareness, so for me to draft a D in the first round he has to be 80, and if he's not, he needs to be as close as possible to 80 with enough D-awareness Potential so he can reach 80 in a couple of years. I am very unlikely to dress a D on my NHL team with < 80 D awareness (but have).

With forwards i don't "require" an 80 D awareness, but he does need to be defensively responsible. I've seen some players rated very highly offensively, but with a < 70 D awareness, so i pass more often than not.

That's my first tie breaker, followed by League Interest. In the later rounds (4 & 5) i usually just draft the players with the highest League Interest and overall rating combo since they are so unlikely to ever sniff the NHL.

Re: Be a GM Drafting Help

I usually watch them from the ratings and if I'm not sure that who I would draft I watch how accurate they are, if they are like two accurates and one questionable I will pick him. And I seem to get players that have quite good overalls.
Here is my usual pick overalls:
                      1st Round: 75-78
                      2nd Round: 72-76
                      3rd Round: 71-75
                      4th Round: 70-73
                      5th Round: 68-71

But I have also made steals like once I drafted a goalie in the third round and he was better than my first rounder, if I remember right the goalie was 78 overall.
I'm a finn so don't be surprised if I spell words wrong.

Re: Be a GM Drafting Help

Make sure you are making an accurate pick, check to see the players offensive, defensive and athletic skill. If they are all green and 7.0 the player will likely have an overall rating of about 70. I usually get about 75 overall in the first round, and maybe I may get another 75 later in the draft. Even if somebody may have an unusally high individual attribute, they may suck!
