Re: Madden NFL 11 and Madden NFL 10 Screenshot Comparison: Philip Rivers
I was watching some video of Madden 02 for PS2 and was surprised to find that the way the camera's behaved in terms of shot selection was a lot closer to broadcast than what we've had all generation:
Aside from great stuff like intro's with name banners and sideline reports, or scenes of the coaches reacting intelligently to what's happening on the field... look at 8:24 of the video where Sehorn knocks down a pass from Grbac. Look at the post-play reaction from Sehorn. It's much smoother than anything we get now. The post-play player reactions today are terrible. And look at the camera shot on Sehorn, it's done well. But then they went a step further and they showed Grbac in the huddle trying to collect himself and the camera shot was nice.
... the fact that it all moved so smoothly is what I like most about it. None of this moves smoothly in Madden today, the camera's aren't right, the shot selection is almost never right. It doesn't flow like a broadcast at all.
Shots like these would make detail matter more and I'd have a lot more enthusiasm about the pictures they're releasing. But it's hard to get enthused about something I'm never going to see while playing the game live as a result of the camera's not being right.
The last two years they've been working on broadcast elements, and there was improvement last season. But at some point, they've got to nail this thing with the camera's. Above all the other presentation elements, this one thing with how camera's operate and how scenes chain together is paramount.Comment

Anyways, the graphics are perfectly fine.
Heck, I would be happy with Madden 10 graphics for the rest of this gen if by keeping them the same, things such as progressive lighting, better field degradation, and interactive sidelines are added.Comment

If they used camera's that were like TV where they show the QB just under shoulder (many times after an incomplete pass, for example), then this would be great. My gripe (in addition to the other issues I mentioned earlier) is that the camera's don't behave like a broadcast, and therefore angles like this one never happen during the game, which makes these pictures frustrating to look at. It's more like looking at a demonstration, because you know these will never wind up in the game.

I went into replay mode and captured what I think some of the post play shots should look like. They would definitely help the wow factor since the graphics are so good up close. Forgive the cellphone quality.
Add in some long post play animations and this game could go alot further convincing people it is a real broadcast.http://twitter.com/sageinfinite

Yeah that statement really was ridiculous.

lol what?
its going on the 6th Madden on nex-gen systems and if they cnt make the game look alot better and inhance the gameplay then that just goes to show that this "new madden team" arent workin as hard as they say they are. maybe ur standards for the madden game arent as high but by the 6th madden game on nex-gen systems they should have this game down pact especially when its the only NFL football game out...no questions asked.Comment

But yeah, I agree.
There needs to be more real time cuts during post-play up close like how it was in Madden 2001/2002. It would put procedural awareness/player emotions, and the new depth of field to good use.Comment

Yep and they stated things that were added that were more than just minor graphical improvements later on in the year.
So yeah... don't really see what you are trying to get at.Comment

Exactly. Madden 2001 I think was some of EA's best post play camera work. The game was always on display when PS2 was just being released and it wow'd alot of people off of the camera's alone.

If they could do that and have new post-play player reactions like you pointed out (and I hate to say this again but the reactions/movements are terrible right now), then this very big missing piece would finally come together. They just can't save the post-play animations in the game now. They're just bad, they have to be scrapped, new animations must be made. I mean, after 5 seasons I don't see why we have the same post-play reactions anyway. Advancements should've been happening here every season.
The post-play animations need to be more intelligent and tied to situations, because the last thing I'd want to see is a great camera shot of a player celebrating a 1-yard loss like we sometimes get now(minus the great shot of course). I'd also like to see celebrating tied to a rating (even a hidden one will do), because seeing players who never go nuts in real life do it in Madden is just another one of those things that affects authenticity in a negative way.
