Most Realistic to Real Life Pitch Speed?

Hey y'all, I don't really mess with the sliders, but I do want to have accurate pitch speeds while playing. Is maxing out the pitch speed putting it at the real pitch speeds, or is it somewhere in between the default and max speeds?

    Got this from http://www.brooksbaseball.net/pfx/
A Fastball @ 93 will get to the plate in roughly .408 secs
    A CB @ 77 .489 and so on........

I guess the best way to check is to get a stopwatch out and check it yourself

You must have some killer reflexes if you can hit well when the pitch is coming in at its actual speed. That or I'm underestimating how quick a real MLB fastball can get up on ya.

Haha that's for sure....as if this game isn't hard enough with pitch speed at default.

Re: Most Realistic to Real Life Pitch Speed?

Intersting thread. I play on All-Star and have noticed if anything, the pitch speed on default (5 on the sliders) is too slow. I am turning on fastballs way too easily. Personally I'm not going to do the research on this myself, but I would guess you'd have to get close to maxing out the pitch speed slider to get it to real life speed. Keep in mind that only elite athletes can catch up to a 98 mph fastball. Look at how many MLB players can't hit that pitch, even when they're expecting it.

Yesterday I turned on a 98 mph fastball (on the inside corner too) from Ubaldo Jimenez. I was hitting with Jason Bay. I hit a screaming line drive home run just inside the left field foul pole for a home run. It was the only runs I scored off them in a 2-1 win.

Well if you can do it more power to ya. Turning on a 98 mph fastball should be near impossible as you said. I think it's more about finding a speed that fits your reaction time accordingly.

I myself, turn pitch speed down to 0 to help me work counts and get realistic pitch counts for opposing pitchers. I still have a hard time turning on anything over 93 mph that's up in the zone (unless its a 2-0/3-0 count and I am expecting a fastball). But I found something that works for me in terms of my abilities.

As far as getting a realistic speed, I would assume that it would be comprable to maxing out the pitch speed slider. That might even be too slow.

I did some very basic research with a stop watch and with C.C. Sabathia. Believe it or not, the default pitch speed actually isn't too far off. I was consistently getting about 0.4 seconds on a 94-95 mph fastball from the ball leaving the hand to it popping the mitt, which is actually longer than it takes for it to reach the plate. Conversely, when I went to the max pitch speed, the ball was getting there in about 0.35 seconds, which is crazy fast.

                  Rahkhem,

Thanks for figuring that out, I was expecting it to be maxed to be comparable to an actual MLB heater.

Re: Most Realistic to Real Life Pitch Speed?

The main reason I think that we can turn on those high velocity pitches are the fact that the hitters in the game swing crazy fast, and for us its just pressing a button, but for an actual hitter, they have to swing a 2 lbs. bat.

I agree. Anything lower than default is not realistic, and too easy to turn on good fastballs.

It might be too easy for you, but for me turning the pitch speed down makes for a better overall experience.

But yes, it is the most "realistic" in terms of speed to the plate according to the research done by Rahkhem.

I turn pitch speed up to 10. It makes it tough to catch up to fastballs and when a pitcher throws something off speed u can really be fooled, just like real baseball. It is very hard at this speed, but it feels closest to real baseball to me. U can always turn down the Hitting Difficulty to a lower settings to try and even things out. The lower hitting setting will give u a bigger sweet spot as well. The better the player the bigger the sweet spot. Give it a try for those that enjoy a real baseball sim type of feel. Later

I play on allstar hitting and HOF Pitching, I feel like Pitch speed at 8 gives the best illusion of a MLB fastball and just enough time to stay back on a badly thrown offspeed pitch

Re: Most Realistic to Real Life Pitch Speed?

I agree that lowering pitch speeds is the way to go. I'm here to enjoy the game, not be eternally frustrated at my snap decision making on some awful slider 3 feet off the plate.
Especially if you can get excitable (or angry in my case) and become convinced that the next pitch coming is an automatic home run because the AI made you angry. Then you proceed to get four brief half innings of first pitch swinging.
However watch any major league baseball game and you will see certain people (Juan Uribe of my 2005 hometown White Sox comes to mind) swinging at the most garbage of all garbage pitches. Then there are people like Jim Thome who frequently was in the top five every year for both bases on balls and total KO's. Go figure.
With regards to fastballs, there is gross misconception about speed. Location and or movement matters far more. Even the dimmest baseball prospect can hit a 98 mph screamer straight down the middle. Certainly speed helps, but baseball history is full of guys like Greg Maddox and currently Mark Buerhle who never approach 90 mph.
Maddox had insane movement and location and Buerhle works faster than any other pitcher in the game along with excellent location, a great cutter, and a nasty changeup. He also throws an 87 mph fastball.
History is also full of guys who never made the show because they could only throw that 98 mph fireball accompanied by a garbage curveball or changeup that nobody fell for.

BTW, there is no "unhittable" fastball, if you cant hit a fastball, no matter what the speed, you aren't going beyond your local softball league.
