What type of coach are you?

For those of you who use manual line changes, how do you like to utilize your lines?

Do you consistently roll four lines? All in a row? Do you only put out your checkers for a spark? Do you like to use a specific line more than usual against a certain team? Do you shorten your bench in the later periods?

Or do you just let the CPU take care of it all?

1st liners will see about 18-21 minutes per game...2nd liners about 15, 3rd liners about 12 or so...4th line about will only see about 6 shifts a game.

And yes, the bench gets short if its late in a game...thankfully I have a very effective top three lines.

I use adjusted sliders so i cant rely on the computer to change my lines at all.

I usually roll all 4 lines. I tend to roll my top 2 lines more often. It took a little bit of work but I'm so good at it now that at the end of games I can look at Time on Ice for all my players and it works out pretty well that my best two players (Datsyuk and Zetterberg) as well as my top 3-4 defensemen are the leaders in time on ice with the 4th liners that dont provide much with the least amount.

I do bring in the 4th line to occassionally drop the gloves too Even though there really isn't any sort of momentum factors installed in the game, I like to pretend there is and try to be more offensive there after.

I mostly play online sometimes play versus and i would like to play my most defensive sound line against the other teams top lines but you never know exactly when they change out there which makes it hard and really you can defend and score with any line considering the attribute effect slider doesn't seem all the way up for online which it should be.

I roll four lines during active play but pick out the best line that is fresh during stoppages.

I usually roll 1-2-3-1-4 so it's pretty even while still giving my best players the most time. Lots of times people will get less time but will work themselves tired really fast through time in the D zone so that can be a disadvantage.

              depends who i'm playing

I tend to put certain types of players on lines

like, Line 1 is speed line

line 2 is the big banger line

line 3 is defensive shutdown line

line 4 is the young guns line

I just try to get good matchups with my lines

Re: What type of coach are you?

I usually try to run lines 1, 2, then 3 or 4 depending on the situation (3 is my hard hitting defensive line with a good face off center, 4 is my young gun line with a lot of raw talent), and rinse and repeat... of course, I use high fatigue slow recovery sliders, so a lot of times I have to roll with 4 lines, even if its just a quick 30 second shift w/ my 4th liners

I also like to run out my 1st line as often as possible on stoppages in the offensive zone because Drury is a monster in the faceoff circle (mid 90 faceoff rating). Then I try to bring my 3rd line in for defensive draws (Dubinsky is 2nd best on my team in the mid 80's), with my 1st line as my second choice in those situations... So it usually breaks down where I just end up trying to mix and match and find fresh legs. The goal being to get my 3rd and 4th lines on just long enough to give my 1st and 2nd liners a blow (unless we're in a position where we need defense over offense, in that case i'll run lines 1 and 3 more often) and then run my top 2 lines out for full shifts

For the most part, I still just let the cpu take care of my line changes.

About the only time I interfere is, at game stoppages. Quite a few times I've noticed the line that was about to continue on after a face-off...the line was pretty gassed.

Handling my own line changes is something I hope to add soon to my playing of NHL, as I gain more experience.

Re: What type of coach are you?

My top 3 lines get good play while the 4th line is there to fill gaps when my other lines are tired or if I need a spark and want to get more aggressive on the forecheck.

If I'm losing in the 3rd period, I'll go with shorter shifts and try and cycle between the top 2 lines to keep them fresh to hopefully generate more scoring chances.

Re: What type of coach are you?

Well since everyone else has shared I figure it's only fair if I do as well.

I'm basically more of a situational coach, I mean if the game is tied in the first period or I have a two goal lead at any part of the game I will generally run four lines with the top two getting the bulk of the ice time.

However if I'm down a goal or it's a close game I will only roll the top three lines and even possibly shuffle some of them (example: I used four forwards and only one defenseman last night and I ended up winning the game after drawing a Powerplay with the forward playing D in the third period).

The only time I really pay attention to what the other team is doing as far as line changes go is when they put their fourth line out, I will instantly put my fastest forwards on the ice which normally results in a goal after I've skated circles around them for a couple minutes.

If you guys haven't tried it, you should. You put a fast line against their "shutdown" or grinder line and you can tire them out so easily it's actually quite comical.

Re: What type of coach are you?

I roll my top 3 lines and put in my 4th against the 1st line of the other teams when I'm in my defensive line - or when I need momentum boost, I come out and gun for their studs and try to fire my team up and of course get a litte scrappy!

The one thing I can't figure out is how to save manual line changes - I have to turn it on manual before every game and even if I save, it resets back to auto.....anyone have suggestions?

I don't use a set rotation of lines. I have my best defensemen and defensive forwards on line 3, which starts every game for me, and I always put them out against the opposing team's top line. Line 1 usually goes against the other team's line 2 or line 4, line 2 goes against the other team's 3rd/4th, and line 4 goes out every now and then to pick up a fight or just as a filler when the other lines are tired. Moreso the latter as I do'nt really have fighters on that line anymore (I play as the Devils and left Peters in the minors and I couldn't reach a deal with Clarkson to resign him)

And as for saving the manual line change setting? I don't believe you can, as I think that is something you can only change at the pre-game options menu

Mine has always been set to manual, I've never had to change it.
