    Your Prototypical Football Team

hey guys thought this would be an interesting topic. ideally if you had to pick 3 types of players to lead you NFL team what type of player would they be and why? here are mine

Field General QB : In pretty much every great NFL offense there was always a fantastic QB leading the way. My QB Would ideally be a guy who can lead the team with passion, stretch the field with a fantastic arm and most importantly read a defense properly so he knows what throws to make at certain times. Think of Peyton Manning with rich gannons stellar accuracy.

Defensive End : I need a leader of the defense as well and i think the DE spot is one of the best postions for a leader. I would want a tall fast and strong end who could move around or break though the o-line with ease. Pretty much think of Decon Jones

Tight End : Tight end to myself is one of the most important positions on the Offense. My tight end would have to be able to block with the best of the o-line yet be able to break off and run out for a pass pretty quickly.

    whats your 3?

Sniper QB- Can complete a pass to anyone from anywhere at anytime. (P.Manning)

Roving Safety- Has to be able to cover the field, have great hands, and lights you up when you come across the middle. (T. Polamalu)

Stone-Cold Linebacker- Will punish you anytime you come around his position and can run sideline to sideline. (Urlacher, early in career)

        Left tackle
Middle linebacker (the QB of the D... give me Ray all day)
torn between DE and safety for the third. I've seen what the Steelers look like with a dominant DE and their star safety out, but they also don't have Ray in the middle of the D which may have made a difference there.

I think it's easy to structure an offense that caters to certain QB strengths (while limited errors from a QB's weaknesses) than it is to work without a dominant LT or having dominant forces in those areas on defense.

A QB in the mold of a Dan Fouts/Kurt Warner with a cerebral touch a la Manning

A big bruising TE with soft hands who can move fairly well and truck over certain defenders

A MLB with a motor. He doesn't have to be huge or anything but someone who'll never give up and lead the defense a la Ray Lewis or to harken back to an earlier era Mike Singletary

            Pocket QB (Peyton Manning type)

            Franchise LT

Versatile DT (T. Knighton type, solid in 4-3 or 3-4)

Workhorse RB - I want a guy I can give the ball to 30 times per game with no problem. He doesn't have to wow me with 20 TDs and a 5 yard/carry average, but he just needs to withstand punishment and carry the load late in the game. I'm thinking Eddie George or Jerome Bettis.

Tackling Machine MLB - Someone who gobbles everything up. He's good at shedding blockers, reading the run, and pursuing ball carriers. Ray Lewis is the obvious comparison here.

Game-chaning Safety - I need a ball-hawking FS/SS who can cover from sideline to sideline and come up and help the run. He needs to be able to take a lot of pressure of the cornerbacks but still be a terror in the box. Troy Polamalu fits perfectly. Or Ed Reed.

Versatile DL - Think of a Richard Seymour, Reggie White, John Randle or Warren Sapp (early years) kind of build: a quick, powerful athletic body that can play any position on the defensive line in any scheme.

Shut Down CB - While I'd love a freak like Deion Sanders, I would prefer to have a CB who was just as stout in the run game as well. If you can negate one player or one third of the field you can gameplan much better with blitz packages and coverages.

This last one is tough and I'm torn between a franchise QB, workhorse RB or all-around TE but in the end you need one big piece to help with the other so I decided:
Franchise QB - Doesn't have to be the greatest athlete, have the biggest arm, etc but if he can play smart, be a great leader, and will some wins I'll take that any day.

Here's another interesting question... sort of a "part b"...

Would you still want the same three types of players if you were building a college team? How about a high school squad?

Beastly Left Tackle- Give me a guy like a Munoz, Ogden, Pace, you win in the trenches.

Beastly Defensive Tackle- Same argument, you win in the trenches. A Joe Greene, Warren Sapp, Alan Page, these guys can make studly defenses.

The third spot is much tougher. For me, I can't decide between RB and LB and QB. For RB, I'd say a strong workhorse running back, a guy who can handle a lot of carries and power the offense. For LB, I'd want a tackling machine who can lead and play all facets of defense (Pass rush, run stop, coverage, etc). For QB, I'd want Peyton Manning, but I'm a Colts fan so I may be slightly biased.

In Today's NFL I would take a pass rushing OLB, shutdown CB, and superstar QB. (L.T., Revis, & Jamarcus Russel)
