    2015: Championship

NATIONAL CHAMPS CROWNED: MARYLAND BRINGS HOME THE TITLE
    April 6, 2015

Albany, NY - Head Coach Stew Morrill has fought his way through the ranks and finally landed the ultimate W, crowning his Maryland Terrapins 2015 NCAA National Champions. Since his days at Utah State, Morrill has done nothing but produce raw power on the basketball court and this year was no different. The Terrapins played in a very tough ACC this year and finished tied for fourth place, but were able to get hot at the right time and roll through the tournament. To speak to the power of the ACC, they had six teams make the tournament this season. Wisconsin had been running hot as well, but looked sluggish and tired from their overtime thrill ride against UCF on Saturday. This year marks the second in a row where the most prolific offensive team in the tournament has pulled out the only six win streak that really matters. Maryland has waited for thirteen years for another championship to brought back to College Park and the city is sure to be rocking for days.

BREAKING NEWS: RICK PITINO TO RETIRE, NOLAN LANDS AT LOUISVILLE

Louisville, KY - After missing the NCAA tournament this year and finishing strong making the NIT Final Four, Rick Pitino has decided to call it quits. Pitino, a God to most around Louisville, finishes his career with a lifetime record of x-x, and x national titles under his belt. "There comes a time in every coach's career when there is just no more left in the tank," said Pitino. "We finished strong this season and with six seniors leaving, it was as good a time as any to move on from coaching. I want to thank everyone for their support in this great career and I wish the best of luck to whomever takes over here at Louisville."

Coach Nolan said last week that he was not actively seeking another job, but he would not rule out any job offers and he was at the top of the list for all teams looking for a coach. Louisville went to Nolan first and they were able to strike up a two year deal almost immediately. "This is something you can't say no to," Nolan explained. "I don't feel great about leaving UCF after only two seasons, but this is the opportunity of a lifetime for me. I wish the Knights the best of luck this season and I hope I left Skinner with a solid lineup to work with. I look forward to talking more at the press conference next week."

After a fairly uneventful off season last year, the coaching carousel almost spun out of control this season with openings in the Big East, Pac-10, SEC, Big 10, and A-10.

          Press Conference

Louisville, KY - A press conference was held today in regards to Charlie Nolan being named the new head coach of the Louisville Cardinals men's basketball team. Alongside Coach Nolan were Director of Athletics Tom Jurich and several members of the local media. Reporters from local news network WHAS11, WLKY.com, and the Courier-Journal were in attendance.

AD Tom Jurich: "Thank you all for coming. Before we open up the floor to Coach Nolan, I just wanted to take this opportunity to say a few words about our hire. We know the kind of basketball everyone has grown accustomed to here at Louisville and we went out looking for the best available coach. Coach Nolan was at the top of everybody's lists this off-season with his expiring contract and luckily for us this was an offer he couldn't turn down. After consistent success with teams nobody gave a chance, we are eager to see what Coach can do with our team. Without further ado, I would like to introduce to you Charles Nolan, the new Cardinals basketball head coach."

Coach Nolan: "Thanks Tom. Hello everyone, and thank you for coming out. I just have a few things to say and then I'll open up the floor for questions. Firstly, I want to let you all know that I had no plans on leaving UCF after our great run this past season, but coaching at Louisville is a job that I just couldn't turn down. I know there are high expectations here and I have big shoes to fill with Rick deciding to hang it up, but I am up for the challenge. I'll tell you right now that I will not leave Louisville without at least one national championship title."

Reporter: "Coach, what did Pitino leave you with and how will you go about getting players to sign this season?"

Coach Nolan: That is a good question. With six seniors graduating this past year, I certainly have my hands full with recruiting this off-season. I am very grateful for Rick to leave me with such a great team already and he has signed on PF E. Austin, a 6'-8" four star recruit out of Troy, Michigan where he was Mr. BB. Austin was the #7 power forward in this recruiting class and the #86 overall player. Rick also got SF P. Monroe to sign on here. Monroe is a 6'-5", four star recruit out of Chicago and he was the #15 SF on the board and #93 overall. We lost three forwards and three guards this past season, so I will be looking to sign some guards and maybe another big man. I like to have a twelve or thirteen player bench so I can keep scholarships open, but we will deal with that when the issue arises."

Reporter: "Coach, how do you think the players will respond with a new head coach? Many of them came to Louisville to play for Coach Pitino."

Coach Nolan: "Well we all know how great of a coach Rick Pitino was, but I think my resume speaks for itself. I think I have done a good job everywhere I have coached, its not like I am just some shlub off the streets who is going to coach the Cardinals. I've got five 20+ win seasons under my belt and in my entire career I have only missed the NCAA tournament once, and that year we were chosen to the NIT. I was also chosen as Conference USA coach of the year last season and I have never had a player transfer out on me. So to answer your question, I think we will be just fine."

Reporter: "With such a prolific career at smaller, little known schools, what are your goals for the team now that you are coaching in a power conference."

          Coach Nolan:
"I have the same goals for every team I coach and that is play your best every game. If we play to our potential every game, we will win them all. My goals for the team are to win the Big East Tournament, make the sweet sixteen, and win a national championship. I also want to coach this team to a top 10 ranking in the AP polls. I don't know why, but I always get snubbed in the polls and have never cracked the top 20, even when we had an RPI of 4 last season."

AD Tom Jurich: "I think we've got time for one more question and then Coach Nolan needs to get back to recruiting and getting to know his new team."

Reporter: "Coach, what is your outlook for this season, where do you see your team headed into the NCAA tournament this year?"

Coach Nolan: "Well the Big East is always a tough conference, and to say we are going to win it is a bit overzealous. I would like to finish in the top four in the conference and have a first round bye in the Big East Tourney. I think this team is good enough to make the NCAA Tournament with or without the conference tournament bid. Although we lost a lot of seniors last year, you guys saw how good Dennehy was as a freshman, he is only going to get better. Having a big time player like this Freshman All-American on the floor will only lead to good things for us this season.

I would like to thank you all for coming out today and I look forward to your continued support this season."

Thanks, I'm looking forward to playing more than two tough games a season! Plus there is a sophomore on my team that mad Freshman All-American at the end of last season so I am excited to play with him. Figures my first 5* AA signed at UCF and I'm not going to get a chance to utilize him

NOLAN'S TENURE AT LOUISVILLE STARTS NOW

Louisville, KY - Coach Nolan's time at Louisville officially begins today. After leading the UCF Knights to back-to-back thirty win, conference champion, NCAA berth seasons, the Cardinals hope he can bring that kind of success to Louisville. Former coach Rick Pitino signed two four star recruits and Coach Nolan signed on three more players at the end of the season. Nolan kept on both assistant coaches from last season, one to help recruiting and one to scout games. With two guards graduating this season and two guards coming into the university this year, Nolan will likely recruit younger players in hopes to bring in a big recruiting class in a few years.

                Losses and Additions
The Cardinals brought in five freshman players this year, two of which were signed by former head coach Rick Pitino. Pitino brought in shooting guard Rob Haney and forward Rocky Monroe and Nolan signed center Major Dillard, center Emmett Austin, and shooting guard Jonathan Rickert. The Cardinals only have two seniors graduating after this season, but have plenty of depth on the bench to fill their void. Louisville was able to bring in the 17th rated recruiting class this season, the first time Nolan has cracked the top 20 recruiting classes.

                Starting Lineup:

PG #12 Terrell Causwell, 6'-2", 211 (Cincinnati, OH) 80 OVR Junior
SG #14 Chas Dennehy, 6'-5", 210 (Gary, IN) 87 OVR Sophomore

                Big East Projections

The Big East is absolutely stacked with talent this season, and has five of their sixteen teams in the AP Top 25 pre-season poll. Louisville has their work cut out for them this season come conference play time.

                Projected Standings:
                1. #11 Notre Dame (91 OVR)

                Schedule Released
The Big East is always a tough conference, and this year is no different. Seven of their sixteen games in the Big East conference are against ranked teams. The show he can run with the big boys, Coach Nolan has scheduled three additional games against Top 25 competition in hopes to bring his Cardinals to the top of the conference and the top of the league. Nolan's UCF Knights were ranked the past two seasons, but he has never coached a team higher than the top 20, something he promised to do in his press conference at Louisville. Nolan also scheduled games before conference play against rivals Kentucky, Memphis, and his past team UCF. Coach Nolan also scheduled a game against the #1 Michigan State Spartans. Michigan State has been picked by many experts to win the NCAA championship this season.

Awwww. Maryland wins the Natty but then doesn't get love from the polls? Congrats on the Louisville job. Oh, and why are you starting Dillard over Austin at Center?

Thanks. Maryland had four starting seniors on the team and only a so-so recruiting class, so that's why they are unranked as of now.

Dillard and Austin are almost identical, with Dillard a little better on D and Austin on O, but they split minutes equally right now. I went with Dillard because Cohen and Dennehy are * players and sick on offense so I figured Dillard would give a little defensive edge. Plus Major Dillard sounds like a badass and he has a huge afro haha.

Coach Nolan definitely got his new team off on the right foot last night by absolutely dismantling Army. On way to the forty-three point win, every player on Louisville's roster got playing time and points in the stat column.

Senior Rudolph Cohen led the Cardinals in scoring with his 14 points and also added 1 rebound, 1 assist, and 1 block in the winning effort. Cohen is going to be the go-to guy this season for Louisville and his production will only go up when he gets more minutes against better competition.

Sophomore Chas Dennehy, who made the Freshman All-Conference last season, is turning out to be an absolute stud. In limited minutes in last night's game, he was able to record 12 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists, and 6 steals. One can only wonder what kind of numbers he will put up when he gets more minutes.

Army only had one player show up and actually do well in the game and that was senior shooting guard Aron Barton. Barton may have scored 22 points, 2 for 6 from deep, but he was held to zeroes across the stat sheet in almost every other category.

With the players Pitino left for Nolan upon retiring, Nolan has resorted to using a three guard lineup at least to start the season out. The guard play for the Cardnials was stellar tonight, so it doesn't look to be an issue at this stage in the season.

"Can't ask for a better performance than that," Coach Nolan said after the game. "Everybody came out to play today. We've talked about adversity since I got here. I have been in this situation before, last year even, when the critics think we are going to fall flat. It didn't happen at UCF last year, and it certainly isn't going to happen here at Louisville. The Cohen-Dennehy duo is going to be amazing all season and the other teams out there better watch out."

The Cardinal's next game is against the Musketeer of Xavier in Cincinnati. Xavier has been playing very well in a powerful Atlantic Ten Conference the past few seasons, so Nolan scheduled them in hopes to create a yearly rivalry to keep up attendance and build Louisville's already enormous fanbase. Pitino has made a yearly event out of stealing recruits from the Cincinnati area which should already add a bit of fuel to the fire in this budding rivalry.

The Louisville Cardinals looked great in their second blowout win of the season. Louisville 2-0, again went wild in the seond half scoring over fifty second half points for the second game in a row.

Senior Rudolph Cohen again led the Cardinals in scoring with his 22 points and also added 7 rebounds, and 2 steals in the win. Cohen is predicted as a first round pick in next year's NBA draft and with performances like this, he looks to improve his stock.

Sophomore Chas Dennehy also had another great game with limited minutes in the blowout last night. Dennehy nearly had a quadruple-double last night with 20 points, 11 assists, 8 rebounds, and 8 steals. As a sophomore, Dennehy already has draft talk buzzing about him and he is currently projected as a second round pick. If he keeps up his stellar play, Coach Nolan might be looking for another shooting guard in the off season.

Xavier played a very unimpressive game at home last night and Gruber was the only player to score more than nine points in their loss. Gruber also added 7 rebounds, but turned the ball over six times. Gruber was defended by a guard for the entire game, so his size advantage was likely the only reason he was able to put up decent numbers.

"This is just amazing," Coach Nolan said after the big win. "No disrespect to anyone I have coached before, but I have never seen talent this good in my career. Dennehy and Cohen are playing out of their minds these first two games and it is great to watch, and better to coach. Dillard had another decent night, its great to see a freshman who isn't intimadated by the older guys on the court."

The Cardinal's next game is in Louisville versus the Boise State Broncos. Boise sits at 2-2 on the season so far against some sub-par competition, so the Cards should be able to easily beat them. The Broncos play a fast paced offense led by Saunders and Day who average 13.8 and 10.4 points per game respectively. The team averages 65.2 points per game, and judging from Louisville's performance so far, that will not be nearly enough points to pull out a win.

Thanks! I was very impressed by rspencer's legacy when somebody just revived it so I tried to model my layout after that. The Louisville Cardinal is actually the campus newspaper on Louisville's campus so I thought that was a cool touch

In their third game of the season, the Louisville Cardinals have recorded their third blowout win. The latest of their blowouts was against the lowly Boise State Broncos. Coach Nolan scheduled games against Army and Boise State as confidence builders for his player and will get into their tougher non-conference games in the coming weeks.

Rudoph Cohen had another solid game today recording a team high 18 points with his 3 rebounds, 2 steals and 1 block. Cohen has been hot coming into this season and is becoming a cornerstone of the Louisville offense.

Chas Dennehy had been running hot, but tonight he cooled off in limited minutes. Is the blowout win, Dennehy recorded only 18 minutes but was able to score 9 points, 10 assists, 7 steals, and 1 rebound. Dennehy is looking very good this season, and it seems that it is only a matter of time before he records a triple-double.

Saunders was the only starting player for the Bronocs that had a good game. He ended the night with a game high 19 points, 4 rebounds, 1 assist, and 2 steals.

Senior shooting guard Kyle Tigert had a good game for Boise also. Tigert came of the bench and in 15 minutes put up 16 points, 1 rebound, 1 assist, and 1 steal. For Boise State though, the problems were on the defensive side of the ball as they allowed 45 second half points.

"This was another great win for us," said Coach Nolan. "It has to be a good thing when Dennehy having a bad night is still nearly a triple-double right? Cohen continues to produce and Causewell had a very nice night from deep. We are looking solid all around, but it is still early in the season. We are off next week to recruit, but mostly to prepare for Michigan State. They are still #1 and are on a tear so far this season. Hopefully we can show the country how good we are and knock them off in East Lansing."

After a week off, the Cardinals will head to East Lansing, Michigan to take on the #1 Michigan State Spartans. The Spartans have been ranked #1 in the nation all year and are currently 5-0. One thing the Cards will have to work on is beating the full court press, which Michigan State uses after every basket. Louisville will also need to step their game up on defense to slow down PF Bass, SG Caton, and SF Mann who average 18.2, 12.4, and 11.8 points per game respectively. We will have to wait and see if Nolan keeps the same lineup he has been going with or brings in another big man to help out on the defensive end of the court.
