    No Injuries... I'm glad

    Hey folks,

unfortunately, injuries didn't make it into the game. But I think it's great that they are not in. I couldn't find the statement of one of the developers, but I recall them saying that injuries didn't make it in because they didn't have time to implement a good injury system.

Now what that means is they refused to put in a random injury system. I love this approach. When seeing this video ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F4FPMf5vf58 ) from the demo video thread... Guess the potential IF injuries will be in e.g. Backbreaker 2... I guess they will define unnatural movement of body parts and then this will result in injuries... some sort of formula of impact, force, direction of force etc...

Now in that video you see a potentially season ending injury to the QB... If they program an injury system based on what the results of their physics engine are... that is going to be SICK...

But still, I'm glad they rather don't have injuries implemented into their first installment rather then implement some random system that makes you wonder why an injury occurs...

Although I didn't play the game yet (ps3 owner) - from the videos I have seen so far: Physic driven engines have to be the future of sports games...

They didn't have time to put in an injury system??? Hasn't this game been in development for years and years and years and years? If EA did this with a sports title they would be flamed to death.

Yes, they would. However this is the first try, unlike madden and NCAA which have been around for decades. So you have to hold Backbreaker to a different standard. Take the good with the bad. Of course it won't be nearly as polished, but the physics are amazing and the gameplay feels extremely organic, despite its flaws.

Honestly, I'm ok with the lack of injuries solely because of the futuristic player models.

I can accept the idea that the game represents a future world. I'm just hoping that franchise mode doesn't mention a specific year and ruin that.

Backbreaker 2 had better have them though.

really?.. so because the game is new that gives the game reason to leave out something that happens everygame small or big?... thetas horrible seems to me like ur giving them a way out or a reason to make a horrible unrealistic game ... no fatigue or injuries thats unacceptable ... people get on the other game for leaving out hand warmers colorful socks an half time shows but people r glad or fine with a football player never getting injured or fatigued .... damn shame ...

I'm not glad injuries aren't in the game. They are a major part of football, period. Injuries have been a basic thing in games for as long as I can remember, time or being new is not an excuse.

This rational is like having a paper due in class and telling the professor sorry I don't have it because I wanted to have a good paper and didn't have time to do a good paper. And I'm new so I should get a break.

If they have franchise, they should have fatigue and injuries. No real way to justify it in my opinion.

Sure there is. The players are robots. That's why they all look the same and wear visors.

I agree completely that they should be there... but it just doesn't seem to bother me as much as it would in that other game.

                    lol

I guess I see part of the motivation of playing a season is simulating what real teams go through in terms of using their whole squad to replace tired/injured players.

I get that you can still follow stats or w/e... but it can suck some of the excitement out of it. I can see why they struggled to implement them... guys tear their ACL damn near every play.

Yeah I love it when base features are left out of games. Well said OP. /sarcasm.

                          Re: No Injuries... I'm glad

Sure, injuries/fatigue are a large part of sports games and it's definitely a shame that BB is missing them both. However I think its good that Natural Motion would rather not include them than to implement half-assed versions.

Especially with injuries you have to think of the differences between animation-based games versus the physics-based system of Backbreaker. In Madden/NCAA/APF2k injuries are more or less random occurrences that can be programmed to happen more often for certain animations than with others.

As the OP stated, in BB they'd have to define what constitutes a "natural" range of motion for limbs, joints, etc. and whenever the body is forced into an unnatural position there would be a high chance of injury. Or lets take other injuries into account. Bruised ribs, for example. They'd have to take the amount of force applied to the ribcage and check to see if that's a dangerous or unnatural amount. If so, injury.

Now I'm not trying to persuade anybody into just accepting the fact that there's no injuries. If lack of fatigue/injuries are gamebreakers for anybody, then that's their prerogative. I guess I'm just trying to defend NM from the people who seem to think adding injuries is an easy thing because "other games" have done it. Backbreaker isn't like the "other games".

Correct. It's got a mucn more limited feature set than the other games.

While I agree with your assesment of injuries, a lot are random or aren't a result of forceful impact or limbs going outside their normal range of motion. Pulls and tendon tears can just happen. Look at Vinny Testeverde's achilles tear for example. It just happened. My freshman year playing ball in college, I saw a guy tear an ACL simply turning around on his way back to the huddle.

I've been around the game a long time, and injuries are a lot more random and happen a lot less frequently due to impact in the game that people seem to be presenting.

Is this a game breaker for me? Not on it's own merit, but it certainly does get added to the negatives list. As someone who plays primarly single player franchise, not having injuries and fatigue really reduce the need for depth and roster management.

Of course random "freak" injuries are entirely possible in a theoretical BB2 injury system as well. For example there could always be a tiny inherent risk that somebody could sprain an ankle or tear something when making a cut, bigger/taller players could have more vulnerable knees, smaller players are at more of an impact injury risk, etc.

*EDIT: Of course that is just idle speculation on my part.*

But anyway, I agree that lack of injuries and fatigue will dumb down Franchise mode quite a bit, I was never worried about it because Backbreaker's franchise never seemed very deep to begin with.
