Bristol Bay Vipers Preview

Bristol Bay Vipers Breakdown

Position Breakdown

QB - Both Rocco Lattimore and Jay Randolph were very inconsistent during the preseason. Jay Randolph preformed great in the first 2 preseason games, but fell off during the last 2 games. On the other hand Rocco Lattimore faultier during the first 2 games, but came on strong over the last 2 games.
Starter - Game time decision

RB - Tony Goosen was by far the best RB, he did everything well but didn't do anything great. Goosen dropped 4 passes and fumbled 2 times but he was head and shoulders above Jake Simon who didnt do anything right. Jake Simon had no pass blocking skills and almost no receiving skills.
Starter - Tony Goosen

FB - Bill Larsen won the starting job because he has the receiving skill needed but he has trouble with blocking, but he will get better.
Starter - Bill Larsen

WR - One of the worst group performances in the preseason, they had 13 dropped passes to only 3 receiving touchdowns. Travontae Edwards looks like a star in the making; he made plays when it was needed. Travontae led the team in Receptions, Yards, and tied for TDs. No other wide out step up or consistently made plays. Someone other then Edwards needs to step up if The Vipers want to have a chance at winning the division.
Starters - Travontae Edwards and Darrin Easley* (may change)

TE - All three tight ends had trouble run blocking and had trouble creating separation from LBs. Lionel Curtis and Robbie Branch both had butterfingers, they had 7 dropped passes. Nico Little didn't see any passes or playing time for that matter. Lionel Curtis was the best pass blocking tight end and Branch was the best receiving tight end.
Starter - Playing it by ear

T - Bernard Tatum looked dominant against slow defense ends but couldnt match up with the fast ends like Robert Mathis. Tatum was an above average run blocker, one of the better ones. London Reeves didnt do anything good, allowed 4 sacks but some how did better than back up Colby Law to keep his job.
Starters - Bernard Tatum LT, London Reeves RT

G - Albert Grant and Anthony Sampson were the only 2 OL not to give up a sack, but they both play on the Left side. Grant was better in the running game and could pull a lot better, but he would let fast defensive tackles beat him at times. Sampson couldnt pull, but was above average at everything else. Snoop Quinn has the footwork to be the other starting guard, but needs to cut down on the holding calls.
Starters - Anthony Sampson LG and Snoop Quinn RG

C - Junior Crawford won the job with easy. He not only played better but he has the potential to become a star.
Starter - Junior Crawford

DL - They all have no pass rushing skills, giving QB's like Tom Brady, Drew Brees way to much time to find targets. If no one steps up, we will be lucky to win a game this year. This is by far the worst group of players on the team and will be addressed in the draft/offseason. They total 0 sacks during the preseason.
Starters - Robbie Hitchcock - RE Nico Millen/Phil Lyons - DT Ronald Santiago LE

LB - Cornell Pattison beat out Twan Kinney, due to the ability to read and react better. Pattison also has better potential, and made some big plays. Ty Sanderson and Donovan Biggs both missed lots of tackles, and couldnt keep up with running backs or tight ends in coverage. On the other hand Clint Stagg had better luck in coverage but like the other 2 couldnt make tackles. Marco Swain had the best preseason out of all the LBs. Swain has the size and strength to play OLB and he is very good versus the run.
Starters - Cornell Pattison - MLB Clint Stagg - LOLB Marco Swain - ROLB

DB - Lacked production during the preseason but that was mostly due to the DLs inability to create pressure, they did however get 3 INTs and scored a TD. Gene Simons made plays and always covered the opponents best wide out. Gene Simons had 1 INT which he ran back for a TD, locking up the starting job. D'Wayne McGwire beat out Ross Anderson for the starting FS spot because he has better speed and is able to help out verses the run. Jed Mason won the job because Antonio Gilbert is way to slow to play SS (71 Speed). Gilbert is better fit to play LB.
Starters - Gene Simons/Marcus Parks - CB D'Wayne McGwire - FS Jed Mason - SS

What they need to do to win the division:

Offense
- QB must manage the game and make plays when needed
- Must find a running game, was nonexisent in preseason
- The OL must keep the QB upright and give him time, 12 sacks allowed in preseason
- Stop foolish turnovers and penalties, 7 turnovers
- Stop dropping passes, led league with 21 drops

Defense
- Must be able to stop the run
- Must get pressure on the QB, no sacks in the preseason
- Someone needs to step up and become a playmaker on defense, only 3 turnovers
- Make them kick FGs instead of TDs, allowed 138 points in 4 games
