    Career Coaching Legacy

The University of California-Davis Basketball Program announced today the hiring of Coach James Campbell as Head Coach.

"I'm really excited about the opportunity to coach here and hopefully start something great," Campbell said. "To have an opportunity to take this program places it hasn't been before is an awesome opportunity to have as a young coach."

Campbell inherits a UC Davis team that is only entering its 4th year as a Division 1 basketball program. The program has been a Division 1 Independent, and it will also be the first year in which the program will be a part of the Big West Conference.

This is Campbell's first head coaching position, and at 25, he is also the youngest coach in Division 1 College Basketball.

I am not sure what roster your using, but Oliver should be your best player, however Lopez-Low and Hanson play way better then their Overall Ratings.. You should have a SG on the bench name Clark?? He is a 3pt specialist.. That kid can flat out bomb...

Good luck. I am just finishing up year 5 with the Aggies, but I threw a different kind of twist on my legacy, having guys from the boards create recruits and started my Career with a "Fab 5" that won 3 National Titles.. Hopefully you can have similar success.

                Preseason Press Conference

                Reporter: Welcome Coach Campbell

                Campbell: Thanks for having me.

Reporter: Being hired at UC Davis, you are now the youngest coach in Division 1 basketball. Your thoughts?

Campbell: With the amount of time that you have to put in just to get to be a head coach at this level, no young coach ever thinks about getting their first opportunity at this age. UC Davis already has a great reputation in the academic realm, and I am so humbled and blessed to have the opportunity to try to bring some of that success to this program.

Reporter: What sort of offense are you going to bring to the table?

Campbell: Our offense is going to be a little bit different that the offense that has been previously run here. Our offense will be a basic dribble-drive offense. Ideally, we want to give our guys some space to work by either driving and dumping it to the 5, or kick it out to the open man. Our conference has a lot of high octane offenses in it, so we do plan on utilizing the fast break if the opportunity is there. The great thing about our offense is that we can either run-and-gun or slow it down and grind it out. We just want to work the ball around and get some good quality shots.

Reporter: What are you going to emphasize to your players?

Campbell: First thing is academics. Plain and simple. These guys aren't just here for the athletics, they're here for their future too. Sometimes we forget these kids are student-athletes, and we as coaches need to emphasize the student part. Academics is more important than athletics, because only a small percentage of players in college basketball get the chance to play in the NBA.

                Reporter:
Have you met with the players yet? If so, do you think you all have some good chemistry between each other?

Campbell: I have met with the players and I think they are a great group with good character and a passion for the game. They're really excited to get the season started and so are we as coaches. Some of these guys are new to the program but most of the players have been here for at least one year, so I think there will be a little transition period in terms of everyone getting to know one another.

                Reporter:
What type of season are you expecting to have this year, Coach?

Campbell: I don't want to get into predictions and all that because in the end you have to settle it out on the court. I think this is going to be a growing year for us and this program as a whole. This is our first year as a member of the Big West and we want to make it count. I think if we can string together some good games especially in conference play and play as a team, we'll be alright.

Reporter: Thanks for your time, Coach. We look forward to watching you this year.

                Campbell: Thanks for having me.

Looks good.. Not sure how much you know about the UC Davis program, but Dominic Calegari was there go to guy. and Payne was Big West FOY I believe. However you will find on the game that their ratings suck.. Clark is the 3pt bomber I mentioned earlier, but really the entire team is actually pretty good. Oliver is a pretty solid go to guy when you need points..

Good luck. I will be following.

                        Re: Career Coaching Legacy

Yea, i was kinda reading up on them through ESPN and played a few games in other legacies with them to see what difficulty to play on that would be challenging. Yea, they play much better than they are rated, so hopefully that translates well

                          Clark Shines At Aggie Jam

At the Annual Aggie Jam intra-squad scrimmage, junior guard Nathan Clark scored 21 points and shot 5 of 7 from three and sophomore transfer Joe Harden scored 16 points and grabbed 12 rebounds as the Blue squad lost to the White 80-64.

Sophomore forward Shane Hanson led the way for the Blue squad with 19 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 steals while both junior forwards Jesse Lopez-Low and Micheal Boone each had double-doubles with 13 points, 15 rebounds and 14 points, 11 rebounds respectively. Junior guard Vince Oliver chipped in with 14 points.

"I think we did some things well today," Coach Campbell said. "We got guys a lot of minutes and let everyone see what some of these guys bring to the table. If our starters can give us this kind of contribution on a consistent basis, we'll be able to make some noise in our first year in the Big West."

The Aggies will continue practice for the next two weeks, then head off to play host Air Force in the Hangar Challenge.

Colorado Springs, CO - UC Davis jumped out to a 11-0 run to start the game and didn't look back as they defeated Air Force 74-59 in the 1st Round of the Hangar Challenge. Air Force struggled to find offense and was held to shooting 38% from the field and only 4 fast break points. UC Davis outrebounded Air Force by 6, grabbed 10 offensive rebounds, and went to the free throw line 20 times but only made 12.

Coach Campbell said, "Offensively, two things we wanted to focus on were attacking to basket early and often and dump it down inside because we had a bit of a size advantage. Defensively, we knew they wanted to shoot a lot of threes, so we wanted to make sure that we got out on their shooters, and I think we did a pretty good job of that tonight."

Guard Vince Oliver led the way with 29 points and shot 11 of 16 from the floor. Micheal Boone added 11 points, 13 rebounds, 3 steals, and 3 blocks while Shane Hanson added 12 points and 3 rebounds in the Aggie victory.

Next up for UC Davis is Northern Colorado, who won their match-up against VMI 79-53, in the 2nd and final game of the Hangar Challenge.
